WWKong··on Ask HN: How do you organise/integrate all the information in your life?
After years of failed attempts I gave up trying to organize everything and started to brutally eliminate most of it. It has been pretty liberating.
WWKong··on Why Are America's Most Innovative Companies Still Stuck in 1950s Suburbia?
Or perhaps some of the best people actually like living and working in the suburbs? Maybe their lifestyle and situations are different from yours?
WWKong··on Graph-Powered Machine Learning at Google
I'm more optimistic about this. I think of it in terms of Big Co has tons of data. Does all the learning. Shares the learning through API for a small fee (very small relative to Small Co having to come up with the learning). For example I upload a picture and Google tells me it is a cat.
WWKong··on Behind the Pixel: Google’s First Real Threat to Apple’s iPhone
What if this is not the definition of design? A quick search of various dictionaries didn't yield what you have described.
WWKong··on Practice coding with fun programming challenges
Games are fun. Here I'm teaching to code one without any engine stuff. Straight up programming: http://buildanappwithme.blogspot.com/2016/01/build-your-firs...
WWKong··on Elon Musk on How to Build the Future
If they never realized they were missing something, then nothing was lost. Net happiness = same level.
WWKong··on To tell someone they're wrong, first tell them how they're right
Agreed. That is what I was aiming for. You worded it better.
WWKong··on To tell someone they're wrong, first tell them how they're right
Here is a method to get the other person on your side of the issue: ask them the reasons the counter point could be reasonable.

"Could you think of some reasons why one would vote for Trump? Seriously."

Use responsibly.

WWKong··on The Shame of Palo Alto: An Interview with Kate Downing on Affordable Housing
Well put. Most discussions around here take a simplistic position, "build more to drive prices down". And then wonder why it doesn't happen when the solution is so obvious. Because it is not only about new buyers but also about folks who have invested everything they have into a market that was already in place before they invested.
WWKong··on How to listen when you disagree
Tell me more. Why do you feel this way? What is your story?
WWKong··on Google Profits Surge on Strong Ad Demand
Do they have to be? No glory in being a multi-billion successful business?
WWKong··on Tesla Model S Autopilot Reliability – Why Americans Should Love Tesla
0.76 fatalities for 100 million Tesla autopilot miles driven? Is that extrapolated?
WWKong··on Vine isn’t growing and most of its top executives have left
You state that these social networks haven't improved experience for user. But user count has steadily gone up and so has engagement. I'm sure the evolution is also inline with their internal metrics. Why is not evolving based on data a good thing?
WWKong··on 100 Days of Swift: The Tutorials
I started learning Swift and created some video tutorials along the way. You can get started with very little or no prior coding experience. Creating the videos take time. I will keep going if there is interest. http://buildanappwithme.blogspot.com
WWKong··on Google and LinkedIn announce massive land swap
That notion is not very accurate. There is lot of value in teams being colocated.
WWKong··on Marie Kondo and the Ruthless War on Stuff
Although this specific program is about literally purging stuff it could maybe lead to some thought exercise: Do I really need all these specialized tools? Why? Is there a simpler solution? Why not? Can I create a simpler solution? Can it be scaled? Would the world benefit from it? Etc.
WWKong··on Research suggests many US parents will lie when saying kids made them happier
Yes. It should be more inline with , "Go back in time but no guarantee that the kids will be the same". Though it will be better than, "are you happy?", it might still not provide a good result because many would have convinced themselves that they need to have kids because "that is how it works".
WWKong··on Research suggests many US parents will lie when saying kids made them happier
I'm curious to see how they surveyed for "happiness". As a parent the initial years are rough just providing care. In the thick of it if someone comes and asks, "are you happy?", the answer is irrelevant (I understand that the question won't be as direct, but the outcome will be similar). IMHO the best question is, "if you could go back in time would you still decide to have children?".
WWKong··on The Day I Got My Green Card
After I-140 is approved you will be able to apply for I-485 to get EAD which will allow you to change employers. Obama's executive order is making it so. You will now see two sets of date for adjustment of status filing in the visa bulliten. Execution of the order is still catching up.
WWKong··on The Day I Got My Green Card
I would love to write a similar article of my own. It has been 13 yrs of being in US, paying high-bracket taxes, raising a family, buying a home, befriending tons of wonderful folks, contributing to the community and generally being a good citizen. It might be another 2 to 4 years.

Although it is hard to complain and I feel I have gotten more out of life here than given back, I often wonder what it has done to my psyche of not being at "home".

WWKong··on Percentage of salary spent on rent near technology companies in SF
I live there
WWKong··on Percentage of salary spent on rent near technology companies in SF
...and keep repeating that "the city" is the best place in the world, at every opportunity, especially since no one outside gives a rat's ass.
WWKong··on Percentage of salary spent on rent near technology companies in SF
You mean using an app to hail a ride? Seems like a great startup idea right there.
WWKong··on WTF Is Aspartame and Why Is Pepsi Bringing Back the Chemical Linked to Cancer?
Nice click bait (the article is about how aspartame is not linked to cancer).

On the topic, people have somehow convinced themselves that all chemicals are bad. And of course their "common sense" trumps couple decades of scientific studies.

WWKong··on India launches 20 satellites in single mission
Thanks. This is what I was trying to convey. Next time I will be more direct.
WWKong··on India launches 20 satellites in single mission
That was exactly my point. Totally lost on HN. Every time we have, "India did x in tech", we get, "but they don't have toilets".
WWKong··on Buffer Layoffs
"... seeing team as family, with shared values..."

Should have tried pay cut across the board and see if folks jumped ship. A good test to see if that culture held up.

(Just a thought. I know it is more nuanced)

WWKong··on How ‘Smart’ Do You Want Your Blender to Be?
It would be really smart if it did the one thing it is supposed to do. That goes for any appliance. Internet connected, high definition, VR toaster? No thanks. $7 and puts out a good toast? Yes, please.
WWKong··on The End of Reflection

WWKong··on Google Street View banned in India due to security concerns
That is bullshit. It is very common in major cities. Unless you consider Mumbai country side, take a train ride through the city.
