WDCDev··on Police use new device to seize money in bank accounts or on prepaid cards
Police unions want large busybody departments and they don't care who pays. They just know that once a new police officer is hired SOMEONE will pay.
WDCDev··on AWS Service Interuptions
Our Sydney EC2 DB instance is stuck spinning in the "stopping" state so we are basically offline right now. The team is working on getting a new DB instance set up, but I read that our payment provide, Westpac, is also having issues. So even if we do get back online, users might not be able to purchase.

What a mess.

WDCDev··on Apple's financial dependence on the smartphone is increasing
This is a horrific comparison, and supports the case for more diversification of Apple's product lines not less.

Kimberly Clark is an extremely diversified company in the home goods and HBA market. Some of the brands they own:

Kleenex, Scott, Huggies, Pull-Ups, Kotex, Poise and Depend

WDCDev··on Apple's financial dependence on the smartphone is increasing
Why invest in Apple if so much of its value is wrapped up in one product line? This is the challenge facing Apple.
WDCDev··on Can the Appalachian Trail Survive ‘A Walk in the Woods?’
Corporate exploitation of our natural resources is an entirely different topic. There are some tangential parallels, but overall I find that analogy pretty weak.
WDCDev··on Can the Appalachian Trail Survive ‘A Walk in the Woods?’
The difference between then and now is that there is much more awareness about what is considered right and wrong with regards to our national parks. Not only that, but folks are much more educated now then they were 100 years ago.

You would think that that would translate into fewer of these types issues in our parks.

WDCDev··on Can the Appalachian Trail Survive ‘A Walk in the Woods?’
Because in both cases I linked to, the perpetrators were under the age of 25.

Sure it's anecdotal ... but you did ask.

WDCDev··on Can the Appalachian Trail Survive ‘A Walk in the Woods?’
I REALLY want to explain this away as the complaining from some grumpy park rangers. Then you have these stories and you begin to wonder if there is something generational going on.

WDCDev··on Maybe This Global Slowdown Is Different
Last I saw it was about an even when expressed as a percentage of GDP (around 44%).

I don't think the that really invalidates my main point. The Chinese have a massive industrial over-capacity that will have to be either liquidated or supported via the PBoC.

WDCDev··on Maybe This Global Slowdown Is Different
The best evidence I have seen for falling Chinese demand for natural resources is over-capacity, and not some tranistion to a services based economy.

http://www.cnbc.com/2015/05/07/more-pain-ahead-for-china-ste...

I think we are reaching a stasis point in the global economy. Aging populations across Europe, Japan and the US are driving demand lower. Developing economies could pick up the slack, and China has been trying to get their population to save less and spend more, but the results haven't been that great so far.

WDCDev··on Why $53M Wasn't Enough to Scale Good Eggs
Heh ... I immediately thought Kozmo.com myself. History is repeating itself.
WDCDev··on Investors Find Ways to Indirectly Profit from Valuable Startups
Investing in HomeAway based on Airbnb's value assumes BOTH are fairly valued. HomeAway's p/e is over 400 right now on a $3 billion market cap. AirBnB is valued at $51 billion.
WDCDev··on What My Landlord Learned About Me from Twitter
Self censorship is one of social media's greatest accomplishments.
WDCDev··on Lessons from Both Sides of an Interview Desk
Do you honestly want to work for an organization that would ding you for sending a .doc or .docx? I surely don't.
WDCDev··on PayPal penalised for 'deceptive' practices
I had a missed payment on a less than $10 balance and was hit with a $25 overage. I complained, had the overage removed, paid my bill and since then have never used their service again.
WDCDev··on WCF is Open Source
WCF has quite a bit of adoption in the .NET community. I am currently working on a major WCF project that uses TCP streaming and named pipes.

This is the third project I have worked on that uses WCF, and I have been working on the .NET platform since Beta.

WDCDev··on WCF is Open Source
Yeah I am not so sure I would serve content using Katana. I am using it to horizontally scale out data services used by clients around the world, hosted in Azure. It's simple to deploy and manage. I also don't have to mess with IIS, which is always a plus given how few admin resources we have to maintain our environment.
WDCDev··on WCF is Open Source
Katana can host your services for you outside of IIS. You can use Web API and Nancy with it. I am sure someone has figured out how to setup servicestack as well.
WDCDev··on WCF is Open Source
WCF was built for the WS-* world, and as such is over-loaded with complexity that is covered up by way way too much abstraction.

If you don't need WS-*, use Web API services self hosted with Katana if you need to exchange data between applications/processes instead.

WDCDev··on Policing, Mass Imprisonment, and the Failure of American Lawyers
It's not just private prisons, it's the correctional officer unions too. They benefit greatly from large prison populations.
WDCDev··on Verizon to Buy AOL for $4.4B
To give you some perspective.

When Time Warner and AOL merged back in 1999, AOL was valued at $166 Billion.

WDCDev··on Elon Musk email to Tesla employee about missing an event to witness the birth
That's ridiculous. No one's commitment to any organization or cause should be questioned if they choose to see their child born vs. coming into work.
WDCDev··on The Tablet Is Being Squeezed Out
Tablets are content consumption devices first, and productivity devices second. I love my iPad, but I see very little reason to upgrade it considering its perfectly suitable for reading books, browsing the web and watching the occasional movie / show on Amazon video, Fios etc...

I am also very jaded by how much performance degrades with every iOS update and refuse to get caught up in the "upgrade every year" Apple cycle.

WDCDev··on Open Sourcing Visual Studio’s GDB/LLDB Debug Engine
You can. I just drag the arrow that appears on broken execution "upwards" to a previous line of code. There might be another way to do it.
WDCDev··on Microsoft Launches Visual Studio Code, a Free Cross-Platform Code Editor
- .net which is just a renamed MFC -

This ridiculous comparison shows just how clueless you are about the .NET platform and Windows development.

WDCDev··on Microsoft Launches Visual Studio Code, a Free Cross-Platform Code Editor
WPF is, by far, the most pleasant and flexible thick client, windowing system out there. XAML is a bit verbose, but the binding capabilities combined with an open source MVVM framework like Caliburn allow you to build extremely flexible UIs.

WPF also abstracts control behavior away from presentation and allows you to easily and quickly extend the base set of controls to do whatever you want to.

After building multiple thick client applications using VB6, MFC, Swign, Winforms and WPF, WPF exceeds all of these, by far, in flexibility and maintainability.

The entire runtime stack is open source.

WDCDev··on Microsoft Launches Visual Studio Code, a Free Cross-Platform Code Editor
The push to open source started under Ballmer and has been gaining momentum the past few years. You saw some of the very early open source work debut when Scott Guthrie open sourced ASP.NET MVC 2 in 2010.

He (Guthrie) blogged a few times about evangelizing open source in Microsoft, and given today's news, he gained quite a bit of traction over the years. It also helped that ASP.NET MVC is a pretty sold web framework too.

WDCDev··on Ask HN: Reddit vs. HN
Me too, and it is why I am more active here than on Reddit. The fact that Reddit has to tag posts as "serious" gives you an indication of how challenging it is for interesting and honest discussion to take place over there.
WDCDev··on Microsoft .NET CoreCLR is now running on FreeBSD 10.1 (amd64)
Speaking personally, yes I am very excited about .NET on *nix platforms. I am currently working on architecting a decent sized cloud application using .NET, Django and ElasticSearch. The entire platform will be built on Linux (CentOS or Ubuntu) to control costs.

Why are we using .NET? My company's experience is primarily in .NET and we need to carefully manage discovery costs across all the platforms we are going to working on. I am going to blog about the experience when the project is set to get underway later this year, so stay tuned.
