WA9ACE··on We Need to Die
Unless such anti-aging style immortality solution was widely available, you would much more likely end up with a situation similar to In Time (2011). The poor fighting for continued survival, while the wealthy live forever.
WA9ACE··on We Need to Die
"The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish."

-- The Great Dictator by Charlie Chaplin

WA9ACE··on Shopify, pulling strings at Ruby Central, forces Bundler and RubyGems takeover
Stripe, AirBnB, Instacart, Zendesk, Kickstarter, Mastodon, and if I remember right Coinbase was originally Rails as well.
WA9ACE··on Orion Browser
Yes
WA9ACE··on Bcvi – run vi over a 'back-channel' (2010)
It's quite fitting as a vim using HAM (with a callsign username), that the top comment on that thread is also a HAM saying how you can also do this in emacs. The world changes all around us, and yet it's always the same.
WA9ACE··on The Reddits
Old style interface on a development focused lemmy instance has completely replaced reddit usage for me

This is the equivalent of /r/all across the lemmy world

WA9ACE··on The dead children we must see
While I agree with most of this statement, there is one example I can think of that caused actual change. I would say Emmett Till's mother's decision to have an open casket funeral and refusal to have his remains touched up by the mortician, was the spark the Civil Rights movement needed.
WA9ACE··on Rail workers oust union president who backed labor deal
I do believe you are correct and that it would end up with a humongous outcry from the public in support of the workers.
WA9ACE··on Rail workers oust union president who backed labor deal
I'd like to introduce you to what has happened historically when labor was met with the national guard. Whether or not this would happen in the modern era I cannot say.

WA9ACE··on Trust in newspapers and television news collapses to historic low
I very much enjoyed Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman.
WA9ACE··on Show HN: I ranked news websites by speed
Tangentially https://lite.pbs.org/ also launched this year.
WA9ACE··on Why can't you reverse a string with a flag emoji?
I feel like I'm obligated to share this almost 20 year old Spolsky post that gave me my understanding of characters.

WA9ACE··on PSA: uBlock/AdBlocks on Chrome to lose function thanks to Manifestv3
They already de-google the entire codebase. You can see which parts are removed here https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/wiki/Deviations-from-... and they keep up quite well.
WA9ACE··on Why time “speeds up” as we get older (2019)
It's all anecdotal, but having been full time RVing for several months now after selling our house time has slowed to a crawl. Before we sold our house the days flew past at 100mph. It's amazing how little control we can exert on our own perception of the flow of time.
WA9ACE··on Usbimager – A non-electron based alternative to Balena Etcher
Thank you for linking me to this this, it's a wonderful write up that I had not seen before!
WA9ACE··on Usbimager – A non-electron based alternative to Balena Etcher
Yes, it's incredibly frustrating to hear people assume everyone has high speed home connections. I operate entirely off cellular. 150 MB is not chump change and it certainly does not download in 2 seconds. If it's not a problem that affects the developer shipping the software it's not a problem that gets noticed or cared about, unless it ends up on a PM's radar or sentry.
WA9ACE··on USPS Begins Postal Banking Pilot Program
It doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere else so I'd like to bring up that the USPS used to offer a sort of banking service before from 1911 to 1967.

WA9ACE··on How I Experience Web Today
You have to tell it how many of the top sites you want removed from the results. For instance you can remove the top 1000 sites and it will remove that foodnetwork.com result.
WA9ACE··on How I Experience Web Today
You’re looking for https://millionshort.com/

I’ve found very many niche sites, blogs, and information dumps with this engine. It’s astounding how much is never surfaced on google or DuckDuckGo.

WA9ACE··on The Push for a “PBS for the Internet”
I'd love to answer that, but I honestly don't know.
WA9ACE··on The Push for a “PBS for the Internet”
No worries! My apologies if I came off brash, you may have been right about the origins of the kids games. We're currently hiring for engineers to work on them!

WA9ACE··on The Push for a “PBS for the Internet”
I work at PBS on one of the teams building these apps, and this has not been the case since I joined. PBS apps are maintained in house out of our Arlington headquarters, with most team members working fully remote during covid, but I fully appreciate you calling our apps good!
WA9ACE··on An Update on the UMN Affair
I'm so very happy that's a feature, I subscribed to LWN a while back from reading some subscriber only links on HN.
WA9ACE··on Telegram: Payments 2.0, Scheduled Voice Chats, New Web Versions
From what I can tell so far webz appears to be using significant amount of wasm.
WA9ACE··on Telegram: Payments 2.0, Scheduled Voice Chats, New Web Versions
webk transferred 627 Kb, and is fully functional. Slack, Discord, Teams, and friends could all stand to trim their web application's bloat a bit and take a lesson from this.
WA9ACE··on A second Bitcoin exchange collapses in Turkey amid crackdown on cryptocurrencies
As much as cryptocurrency for me personally is to have control over its access via a wallet, many people do not want the responsibility to permanently losing their cryptocurrency due to any number of things that could cause a loss of access. In this case exchanges appear to have become the de facto custodian for many people's cryptocurrency holdings. We might could compare it to having cash in mattress vs an uninsured institution that could be hacked or dismantled by the state at will.
WA9ACE··on Zellij – A Terminal Workspace and Multiplexer
Personally I have a TMUX session on a pi4 I keep up that just monitors various services and there's times I'd like to be able to open it not unlike a dashboard on my phone or tablet. Using a session via the web is not a big use case for me, or something I'd want to operate exclusively in, but it'd be nice to have.
WA9ACE··on Zellij – A Terminal Workspace and Multiplexer
It's at the very bottom of the page under "What's next?" really easy to miss.
WA9ACE··on Zellij – A Terminal Workspace and Multiplexer
That's great! As soon as it supports detaching a running session I'll take a look at migrating.
WA9ACE··on Zellij – A Terminal Workspace and Multiplexer
I'm not sure I could untrain all my muscle memory I've built up over the years with my TMUX configuration, but I truly believe in the next 10 years all of my current command line tools will be slowly replaced with rust equivalents (with the exception of neovim). ripgrep and fzf are already a large part of my workflow, and I love seeing WebAssembly becoming the universal plug and play standard.

> Build a web client to allow users to connect to a running Zellij daemon through the browser (on a local or remote server).

That's the future feature I'm most interested in over TMUX.
