Vvector··on Shoichiro Toyoda, who turned Toyota into global automaker, has died
"You need a minimum 3 phase 480v electrical source to charge even a small battery in under an hour. We are talking 150-200Kw?"

The Tesla 3 Long Range AWD has a 76 kWh battery with a range of 358 miles (576 km). The average European car drives 18,000 km/year, or 72 km/day or 10 kWh/day with Tesla's efficiency.

If everyone has giant EV pickups with 200kWh batteries driving 500 miles every day, yeah you have a problem. But that's the tiny minority.

Vvector··on Shoichiro Toyoda, who turned Toyota into global automaker, has died
How much space do you think an EV charger takes? They are the size of parking meters. They are built into lamp posts.
Vvector··on Shoichiro Toyoda, who turned Toyota into global automaker, has died
If you don't charge at home at least 90% of the time, the EV loses most of the benefits. This will slowly change as more EVs are sold and the charging infrastructure improves.
Vvector··on UK: Fast charging EVs more expensive than filling petrol
I discussed this with an Uber driver with a rented Tesla. I asked him how much it cost to charge at home. He said he doesn't, he only uses pay chargers $10-$20 per day.

Some people don't charge at home, even if it would save them money long term

Vvector··on An Update on Leap Seconds (2022)
We already have a leap year, where we add an extra day every four years. So why could we not adjust the clock every 500 years when it gets out of sync by 20 minutes?
Vvector··on On Trucking
Solar powered 'reefer' trailers have been around for a long time, just not economically viable until recently. Dozens of companies showed new designs last year.
Vvector··on The UK is wasting a lot of wind power
> Curtailment cost money, you still need pay the wind operators to the energy you told them not to produce

Why? What are the real costs? Isn't it just a simple disconnect switch? Why do the wind operators get paid for not delivering power? Is it a contractual issue?

Vvector··on The leap second’s time is up: world votes to stop pausing clocks
> Is it important that midnight is actually midnight?

Midnight is almost never at midnight.

Let's talk noon, specifically solar noon, as it is easier to visualize. Solar noon varies throughout the year, and based on the position in the timezone.

Solar noon for two cities in Eastern Time Zone: 11:29:16 - Boston 12:22:36 - Atlanta

Tomorrow, solar noon in Atlanta will be 12:22:50, 14 seconds later than today. No one notices a 14 second shift from one day to the next. As you can see, solar noon is almost never at clock noon, yet no one complains about that. Who would notice a 1 minute shift over 100 years?

The programming problem is made vastly more difficult because the leap seconds are not known in advance. When a new leap second is announced, every dependent system has to be updated.

Vvector··on If you (still) work at Twitter and you can code, head to the HQ now
How much new code does a 280 character tweet require?
Vvector··on The leap second’s time is up: world votes to stop pausing clocks
I'm for that as well. Some minor issues that I've thought of. Currently the day changes (Mon -> Tue) at midnight local time. If the day followed UTC, then would California change from Mon->Tues at midnight UTC, which is 4pm currently?
Vvector··on The leap second’s time is up: world votes to stop pausing clocks
And you can still use UTC as your indicator for day and night. In 100 years, it would only drift around 1 minute.
Vvector··on The leap second’s time is up: world votes to stop pausing clocks
It's a minor problem. One minute off in a hundred years is something we can all live with.
Vvector··on Researchers generate hydrogen more efficiently from water
Maybe we could power the trains along the rail, or in catenary above? Add a very small battery to power it maneuvering around the rail yard?
Vvector··on New Hampshire set to pilot voting machines that use software everyone can see
Computer assistance can prevent over-votes and warn of under-votes. It also resolves any "voter intent" questions (i.e. hanging chads). It can also format the printed ballot to increase the speed at which a machine can read them.
Vvector··on New Hampshire set to pilot voting machines that use software everyone can see
We need a voter verified paper trail, based on an open standard, that can be read by different tabulator machines running different software, and still be hand counted just in case.
Vvector··on Rent going up? One company’s algorithm could be why

Vvector··on Barge traffic halted on Mississippi River by lowest water levels in a decade
Yet the West wants to "solve" their drought by shipping Mississippi over the Rockies. Maybe just stop farming water-intensive crops in the desert?
Vvector··on You Hated Your Cable Package. Your Streaming Services Are Bringing It Back
Wrong. Everyone loses when I refuse to pay $20 for a package when I only want one channel?

I realize I can't pay $1 per channel (20 channels for $20), but I'd be willing to pay $5.

Vvector··on Using Notion as a headless CMS for our blog

Vvector··on Gmail 2FA causes the homeless to permanently lose access 3 times a year
That's a bad example. The unoccupied hotel was vandalized before the homeless were moved in. Yes, it a boondoggle, but nothing to do with homeless.
Vvector··on Integrating with Fastmail
I don't see it as a replacement for sendgrid.

I believe the API is more for the management of a FastMail mailbox. For example, this might allow IFTTT to monitor for emails and take an action.

Vvector··on Shopify lets staff decide cash-stock pay mix as shares dive
Stock Grants are not an "expense" under Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. So by paying in stock, instead of salary, it increases profits on paper. It does help with cash flow and other tangible benefits.

Most employees would be wise to divest much of their company stock as soon as they are allowed. Don't have all your eggs in one basket.

Vvector··on The West's historic drought is threatening hydropower at Hoover Dam
Theoretically, the Department of Interior can impose cuts if necessary to protect reservoir levels. This would likely be challenged in courts all the way up to SCOTUS, and take years to resolve. It's a huge mess
