1. Thank you.

2. I said "iOS devices are just not suitable for browsing the internet as we know it I'm afraid."

I know it is hyperbolic. This is called rhetorical style and I used it to communicate my irritation with the status quo of the internet itself (no joy browsing without ad-blocker etc.) and browsing the internet with iOS specifically (no desktop-like browser experience, no uBlock, no web developer toolbar).

It seems clear that this is my opinion so if you thing otherwise please argue against it or stay quiet (and do not down-vote without explanation like a coward who cannot argue like a grown up).

3. "... people snap..."

So this is reason enough to act like this? In my opinion this does not contribute to a good communication culture.

Yes, same here.

iOS devices are just not suitable for browsing the internet as we know it I'm afraid.

I will get another device for internet browsing on the go just because this is so annoying. Not even on iPad where you kind of have the real desktop browser experience you can use add-ons.

Please do not feel offended by my words but I would never ever use a service like this.

The question in most cases in my opinion is not "will there be a data breach?" but when it will occur. Leaving this kind of data on some servers of some company just opens the door for patients to be extorted etc. in the future.

I like the idea of apps and computers helping us with problems like that but in our world services and devices are just not trustworthy enough for my taste.

Maybe a desktop app on a device that has no internet connection would be a reasonable alternative.

I wish you good luck with your business though and keep my fingers crossed that somehow your data remains secure.

Thank you but not thanks!

This is another step into the AMZN hell where many and their data will be held hostage decades from now if they only rely on their services.

They kill FOSS business models and try to lure you into their vendor locked world to milk you.

I prefer using e.g. Flask to build an API in <5min.

Because there is no such countries until someone can prove otherwise (which will not happen because they don't exist).

Big capital put this idea inside the heads of many people living in the West and until today they really believe there is countries who are socialist/communist. Neither the GDR nor the UDSSR or China are examples for countries like that and people who know about politics, economy and society know this as a fact.

It is easy for you to criticize all alternatives at once because you have never seen any and chose to believe what the ruling party (=capitalism) makes you believe.

VvR-Ox··on With no prospects for profits, big pharma neglects new infectious diseases
1:0 for Capitalism vs. Humanity.

Exactly this is why the motivation to do at least some things should not be bound to earning profit.

There is common goods that we need to share, global issues that need to be addressed together and we need to find ways to achieve this if we want to develop further as a civilization.

Money must not be the sole reason why we do things or we will fail with this "strategy" and we need to come up with good ideas for an alternative and try it.

I know this will probably not make me very popular especially with people living in the US as their minds are constantly being flooded with the idea that everything straying from capitalism is socialism and therefor evil. I will post it nevertheless, down-votes don't hurt and I will write my opinion until it is censored completely.

VvR-Ox··on “Let’s use Kubernetes.” Now you have eight problems
> These kinds of posts always focus on the complexity of running k8s...

Yes but that is also the worst already that you could criticize about k8s.

Complexity is dangerous because if things are growing beyond a certain threshold X you will have side effects that nobody can predict, a very steep learning curve and therefor many people screwing up something in their (first) setups as well as maintainability nightmares.

Probably some day someone will prove me wrong but right now one of my biggest goals to improve security, reliability and people being able to contribute is reducing complexity.

After all this is what many of us do when they refactor systems.

I am sticking with the UNIX philosophy at this point and in the foreseeable future I will not have a big dev-team at my disposal as companies like Alphabet have to maintain and safe-guard all of this complexity.

How did you get Halflife running?

VvR-Ox··on QEMU for iOS
So here is my journey with UTM:

1. Install UTM

- harder than I thought now because of Apple enforcing very strict app signing rules etc. (why can't they just let us run our own code without paying or hacking? Ò.ó)

- jailbreak with checkra1n -> install AppCake -> trust certificates with help of "Apple Configurator" (device management was not in the iOS general settings until I accessed profile settings with the configurator) -> sign UTM with AppCake (Filza -> Open IPA with AppCake)

2. Setup VM with Windows XP

- copied ISO (WinXP SP3) to iPad with VLC "Sharing via WiFi" (awesome tool!)

- created a VM with a 5GB hdd and a CD/DVD with path set to the ISO

- could boot from the ISO and start installation but it crashed after the reboot. I tried again and again by opening UTM again, opening the VM settings (not doing so would instantly crash UTM when I tried to start the VM again)

- finally I realized assigning 1GB of RAM to the VM (iPad Air 2 has only 2GB total) was too much and I changed it to 512MB (default setting) which let me finish the installation of Win XP! :-D

No I will try to install Age of Empires 1 and when I get hands on adapter + keyboard + mouse I will try those with UTM as well.

> people like their locked ecosystems and are not willing to invest in interop

I don't think this is true or fair.

Competition in capitalism is the reason companies create ecosystems like this in the first place (and also different adapters ;P).

If we (the society) would reward interoperability and punish lock-downs e.g. because they are bad for customers and harm the environment the market would have no choice but react to this.

But because it is not like that we will suffer adapter-hell and missing interop until we dedicate enough effort, tears and blood to hack together systems that kind-of-work for some time (I've been there and done that, learned a lot and lost a lot of time and nerves in the process).

I only invest in ecosystems because it saves time and I can do what I intended to do instead of hacking and slaying my way to it. I hate the lock-down and if we would have more open alternatives I would jump on it in a minute but so far the open source world just can't offer some of the services/protocols/features that I just want to use.

When possible I still hack and I admire many very skilled people in this area so please don't get me wrong. E.g. I just jailbroke my iPad to get UTM (QEMU for iOS) running to break out of the "shiny apple ecosystem" but it is again more hacking and playing than doing some serious work or "just using stuff as it was intended to be used".

It is not the fault of the consumer alone while I am sure a rational consumer would put more knowledge and effort into politics and consumption to get companies more aligned with what is good for the planet and the people.

As long as most people only buy and never complain or do something about it this will probably not change.

VvR-Ox··on QEMU for iOS
Thank you very much for sharing this with us. I am about to test it. I have already installed it successfully and it opens without crashing (iPad Air 2, iOS 13.3, unc0ver jailbreak) - so far so good ;-)

I will report back when I tried to install Win XP/7 (I desperately want to play Age of Empires 1 while on vacation since I saw this awesome app :D).

VvR-Ox··on Jailed Just-in-Time Compilation on iOS
It is nice of you to tell Apple engineers about it that way but they will probably change it any way.

When Apple sees an opportunity to market their own stuff they will push competition out of business (even if there is no business at all).

"Security issues" is just a convenient excuse for them to shut down promising projects I'm afraid.

VvR-Ox··on Fruit Walls: Urban Farming in the 1600s (2015)
I recommend an iterative approach: Plan -> Do -> Evaluate -> Change plan accordingly -> Do...

With limited space you will not have a high yield so planting potatoes etc. will not be that "profitable".

If you like to use herbs for cooking it can be a delight to grow your own.

Maybe you don't cook at all and think about plants which are expensive to buy so you can sell them as a side business.

So to maximize the return on invest you probably want to choose plants that:

1) don't need much space

2) survive the conditions at the location (try several plants and strains and only keep the survivors)

3) have a high-yield and are not consumed that often or in huge amounts (e.g. very hot peppers)

The soil you need and the ability to survive the conditions depends on the plants and their strains. I had some bad experience with "normal" basil and it would die very quickly but then I found some African Basil which has very fleshy leaves and strong trunks it would survive for years without changing the soil.

Some plants can survive more easily when combined with others. Philodendron[0] does not need or want full exposure to sun so putting some peppers in front of it increased it's life-time considerably.

You may want to do some research on the frequency of watering depending on the kind of plants you grow but also look for the condition of the plants while applying a certain amount of water, sun, fertilizer etc.

They won't die instantly if you water them too much or less but you will recognize that their growth rate is inhibited or the leaves and fruits don't get the "right" color or size. You will have to look for these indicators and experiment a little bit until you know the conditions of your place and the needs of your plants and therefor have more success with your growing efforts.

You can take the soil from pretty much everywhere but of course you should not take it from near some factory that may have contaminated it. Just think about the kind of plant and what it's natural soil would be like. Aloe prefer soil with some amount of sand while Philodendron maybe don't like that much of sand.

The soil from a river bed is probably a good choice for Mint, Philodendron etc. but not for Aloe (I assume it may not be dry enough for their taste).

I wish you all the best and hope you can use some of my advice. Happy planting :)

VvR-Ox··on Running servers and services well is not trivial (2018)
Like in other business domains this is a "make or buy" decision.

To decide of course you need enough data about the situation at hand:

- initial costs

- keep system running costs

- other pro/con items like "availability" (e.g. you can use a local server even if there is issues with your companies internet access) that can be prioritized and rationalized with methods like the cost-utility analysis or the cost-benefit analysis

I think it is hard to give general advice on what to do in such cases.

VvR-Ox··on McKinsey, technocratic management, and structural inequality
I am pretty sure they did not as most wealth is inherited AFAIK.

Here a snippet of an interesting article on this[0]: "Yet the opportunity to live the American dream is much less widely shared today than it was several decades ago. While 90% of the children born in 1940 ended up in higher ranks of the income distribution than their parents, only 40% of those born in 1980 have done so."

This correlates to the fact that wealth concentrates in few and fewer people around the world (the 1% for whom laws, governments, borders etc. do not exist).

It is not about a comparison with the people who are at their worst (and it will probably not be Chinese farmers but that is another topic). It is about fairness and an average level we can ALL agree to.

I want all people to have a meaningful existence and a life that they think is worth living because in my frame of mind this is fairness.

As long as people starve and children cannot afford to got to school and women are being used, sold and shipped like some goods etc. I cannot stand to see people who get so much more than they need just to spend all the money on stupid things (please take a look at some of their instagram profiles and youtube videos if you don't know what I refer to).

The best of behavior I saw is people like Musk who puts his money into businesses which hope to (really) "make the world a better place" - at least if this is true and not some sales pitch (we can discuss about this in a few years when there is more results I think).

Others like to frame themselves as "benevolent" super-humans who are giving away money to charities. This is "green washing" most of the times to improve their PR. The money they give is a joke and these charities do not change the world as you can see.

Why does someone need or even deserve to own 50 cars and 7 houses? No one contributes that much to the world that he would deserve that and especially not while others are dying because they cannot afford to buy food.

This "hard work" that is needed to become rich is using others and ignoring all moral implications in many times. I had two opportunities in my lifetime to become (kind of) rich and both where at least dubious in one way or the other. It is about cheating governments to not pay any or too much taxes and it is about customers who are willing to pay a huge amount of money for someone to "take responsibility" he does not really take in the end. Also you can cheat consumers like "big tobacco", sugar etc. do.

Staying in this position only took them some money to pay scientists, politicians and others to be legally sold or even recommended and advertised.

These systems are built by generations of people without moral (maybe they are raised like that) and inherited to alumni who are at least as numb and asocial.

=> No one deserves to be that rich no matter what they do. => They become rich by using people like you and me without moral implication or hesitation. => They try to uphold the "American Dream" so we stay quiet until we are as poor as the people on the bottom. (look at Warren Buffet who talked about the "War of the Rich against the Poor")

VvR-Ox··on McKinsey, technocratic management, and structural inequality
I'll do it for half $1m/year! ;-P

You are totally right about the "golden parachute".

The nice thing about being in upper management is that none of your decisions has any negative consequences for yourself and in the end you will just have more money and some more enemies who will probably not even attack you.

It is always about "vitamin b" because that is how certain networks like (financial) elites work.

I always wonder how average people try to defend the rich and argue that it is totally justified that they earn something like one year of salary in a month or even more.

Think about all the big issues we have and how we could tackle them with all the money that now is inherited and shoved around to make more money out of nothing just to be even wealthier.

It is just absurd to me and that people are actually kind of ok with this takes away most of the hope I have for our global future because if these people prevail it might as well look like the "hunger games" here some day.

Here[0] is an interesting article of someone who got the x62 and then upgraded to the x210.

He bought it from 51NB (China) and exactly describes how the buying process including returns and repairs could be improved upon by locating stores/branches in other regions of the world as well.

If you would scale this endeavor all kinds of mods can be thought of and I see no problem to choose the one's you want to have. Think of a configuration app that let's you choose a model/chassis and then configure the TP the way you want.

I am sure it will be a great success and also more people will want some of these when they see how lousy their HP, Acer,... (up to and including new Lenovo) laptops are built in comparison. Climate debate will also lead to more people trying to get used electronics because it is more sustainable.

[0]: https://geoff.greer.fm/2019/03/04/thinkpad-x210/

VvR-Ox··on ThinkPad Mods, Done Right
The new models including the one you bought are not really much of the original TP anymore.

There is still people who love the old one's because of the excellent keyboard and the tough shell while the new models have bad keyboards and a really fragile shell (it just does not feel sturdy anymore).

Maybe the market is not big but I said it is there and not how far you will be able to scale that. Probably enough for a bunch of people to become millionaires.

I switched away from TP after my last model from 2006 was not modern enough for my taste anymore and I didn't have the time to upgrade it myself. Without USB3 and limited because of the CPU it is not an option for me anymore and I would have loved to let a company upgrade it so I can use it 10+ years to come.

And there is still an x200 that I will keep for some x-mas tinkering time to try the libreboot-mod myself.

After all I would be very glad if I could find an x201s some day and mod it / let it be modded by a company so it is not only usable to do some retro stuff but actually useful in the modern times.

The logistics will only get cheaper, faster and more secure and I would not see it as a problem. At the moment we see AMZN pushing into the market while China builds it's "Belt and Road" project. All of these developments will have a positive effect on logistics for consumers and vendors probably.

The hardware for mods may be cheap but you have to add the working hours you need to achieve a mod. Of course it may be reduced by experience.

I often think about doing things like: Is it worth the (cheap) money AND my time?

Sometimes I do it though it is (more) expensive because I also learn a lot but other times I am in a hurry and already stressed enough and would prefer to outsource this kind of work. Especially in the field of customizing (electronics) there is a lot of market share for (small?) companies to be earned.

VvR-Ox··on ThinkPad Mods, Done Right
I agree!

It would be awesome to see more stuff like:

- BIOS with core/libreboot[0]

- mainboard replacement (e.g. to support USB 3) [1]

- better screens [2]

- something to deal with that awful touchpad

There is already people out there doing it and clearly TP's are some of the most used laptops on this planet for a reason so there is a market.

This is the gap between theory and practice.

When you study you will learn a lot of stuff that seems useless for a Software developer at his daily job.

When you only know practice you will be able to use the tools but probably do not understand what most of them do, how they do it and why. Of course this may seem useless in many cases but on certain occasions like optimization some more theoretical knowledge may help you to dramatically improve your code or architecture (It could be the other way around of course).

In the end I think no matter if it is practical or theoretical know how you may gain something from it in the future even if it is not a (typical) topic of your field of work.

A very important insight for me is that you can learn as long as you breathe and it helps you to age more gracefully while being better at what you do.

VvR-Ox··on Show HN: Heimdall – Self-managed email alias/forwarding service
I like the idea but I do not understand why someone would want something self-managed/hosted and then use AMZN SES to send/receive mail and S3 to save mail/attachments.

1. AMZN has access to your mail (inc. your contacts) so you could just use any other service you do not trust. 2. Why would I process mail just so save it on another machine and not do both on the same server?

Probably it has to do with "serverless" (you have to use at least 2 "servers" now, don't you?) but maybe I am just missing the point.
