VladRussian2··on Lavabit abruptly shuts down
>"twentysomethings who haven’t talked to the opposite sex in five or six years"

guess one of the patterns coded into their dragnet.

Note to geeks - get out and talk to girls or your file will be moved into "next terrorists" folder :)

VladRussian2··on Mail provider allegedly used by Snowden suspending operations
>If the courts, NSA, congress has been forcing innoscents to work against their will

basic subpoena forces one to provide the required info. With a little bit of a stretch we can see how a subpoena can be issued for the [future] clear texts that "your webpage" ( an applet downloaded as part of the web page ) will "contain" before sending encrypted version back to your server - in short it means forcing to implement backdoor.

VladRussian2··on Donate to the Lavabit Legal Defense Fund
it starts to sound like providing fully encrypted solution (where provider just isn't able to cooperate because of no access to plain text) makes the provider de-facto accessory to whatever crime may be committed by perpetrators who used the solution while committing the crime. Basically fully encrypted solution (incl. without government backdoor) moves into the same category as assault gun, ie. something that regular good citizens supposedly just don't have legitimate uses for.
VladRussian2··on EFF: "Parallel construction" is really intelligence laundering
>Really, "parallel construction" sounds like what any forensic analyst would do in the case of definitive-yet-inadmissible evidence

that said analyst came by as result of committing a crime (deliberately violating 4th of citizens without probable cause)

VladRussian2··on Here's the Most Idiotic and Brilliant App Ever
aerodynamic is calculatable from deceleration which is sum of gravitational "g" plus aerodynamic "Cx" multiplied by square proportional to the speed. The weight is known for a given model of device.
VladRussian2··on Here's the Most Idiotic and Brilliant App Ever
man, you've tried it with tablet! How big your tablet is? I think they should appropriately rescale scores for the weight and aerodynamics of the object being thrown.
VladRussian2··on The New Innovation Battlegrounds Are City Hall And The State House
>Actually that's what they did, since residential usage like AirBNB is generally against zoning in these areas.

you're missing my point that property rights and laws(zoning) change with (in response, forced by) technological development and innovation.

>And you're focused on the selfish aspects of property rights without considering the benefits towards the commons they can confer

again, my point was that specific property rights have their time when they are actually helping advancing the civilization, yet they are meaningless before their time and delay progress after.

As AirBNB helps more fully utilize buildings, it seems it is a plus for civilization and the laws/zoning preventing effective use of resources start to become obstacles in the way of progress.

VladRussian2··on The New Innovation Battlegrounds Are City Hall And The State House
>People who bought houses in residential neighborhoods did so pricing in the fact that those neighborhoods would not host hotels.

but they didn't price in the risk of technological innovation like AirBNB.

the corner stone in your logic (and in modern economy) is property rights. With my background (USSR), i'm used to think of property rights not of as something God given, instead as of something that was invented at some point and has been very useful so far in the development of our civilization. The property rights itself has evolved, from slavery societies to the modern day, from people as a property to ideas and RF spectrum being considered as property. The property rights will continue to evolve, and probably, God forbid - my townhouse is well over-water now, real estate rights disappear, while rights for DNA or human soul(mental footprint, dreams, etc..), something like this will come, or one day property rights, as exclusive license on something, will just stop being useful for human civilization at all.

>I am honestly a little shocked that the two numbers for Republicans are identical to 3 significant digits.

drives home meaning of "conservatism" :)

VladRussian2··on Judge to serve 28 years after making $2 million sending children to jail
28 years - yep, it may sound at first like a long time (even though they destroyed decades of life for their victims). Yet with good behavior these snakes will probably be out in 7 (if i understand the system correctly), and it doesn't look like they are going to serve time in any serious security tough facility.
VladRussian2··on How Medium is building a new kind of company with no managers
>How is a flat company more efficient than a company that doesn't hire shit managers?

an any meaningful scale these 2 things are impossible.

VladRussian2··on Judge to serve 28 years after making $2 million sending children to jail
how in hell a child can get charged, let alone sent to do actual time, with crime for a mocking page? ok, judge is corrupt. Fine. Happens. Nevertheless, the judge wasn't the one who complained, arrested, charged the child. A lot of adults were involved and they actively facilitated this travesty happening.

People like to blame evil for evil things, yet evil would be able to do much less without reasonable, supposedly good, people actively helping evil things to happen.

VladRussian2··on Samsung Starts Mass Producing Industry’s First 3D Vertical NAND Flash
half of motivation for 3D i see is the model of the brain, not the actual geometry of the brain, which is about 2D+ (don't remember the fractal dimension value of the brain), more a logical model of it where computational power comes from having number of connection an order of magnitude larger than number of connected neurons. Our current electronics has it backwards - number of connection is orders of magnitude less than number of connected elements. 3D seems like a way to build computational devices with increased number of connections (that though requires some work on software side as well to benefit from it)
VladRussian2··on Unsupervised joke generation from big data
interesting ethical question - one is supposedly responsible for behavior of his automated tool/robot. If that automated tool is able to build and initiate execution of another, more complex (well big "if" of course here) automated tool ... at what level of complexity of separation the original responsibility ends, if any.
VladRussian2··on Unsupervised joke generation from big data
there seems to be a market coming soon for such software - on one side government and politicians need to push their propaganda domestically and internationally through web2.0 and social media channels, on the other side ordinary people may soon want to have artificial realistic chatter generation tools as a way to increase chances of preserving privacy of their communications.
VladRussian2··on Samsung Starts Mass Producing Industry’s First 3D Vertical NAND Flash
not being a chip engineer, i wonder while 3D chip layer stacking isn't in the wide use. For high powered chips it is understandable because of heat dissipation requirements. Whereis for lower powered it may seem that additional layers of heat transfer material between working layers would do the trick. For CPUs the 3D stacking would decrease distances between various parts for example and would allow something like cluster (of low powered chips) in a cube.
VladRussian2··on Unsupervised joke generation from big data
i wonder did anybody try the same for HN comments? what would be the karma?
VladRussian2··on Japan nuclear body says radioactive water at Fukushima an 'emergency'
i just got tired of these trollish arguments like number of terrorist deaths vs. car deaths or nuclear deaths vs. coal - it is such a narrow and artificial dimension of comparing apples and oranges, and with that heavily depending on how numbers are calculated (for example, whether Iraq war deaths are added to the number of 9/11 victims or not we'll have either 3K or 103K victims)
VladRussian2··on Sergey Brin invests in synthetic beef
>And even then, you'd have to wait for evolution to take its course and produce (well, perpetuate) whatever DNA is required to produce a bigger brain over a millennium or even longer...

the previous 2M were spent on this extensive option - increasing the size (that was enabled by meat eating), and i think we pretty much exhausted that venue. The next step is increasing the intensity of using that big brain. We use only small portion of it, and prolonged sustained thinking activities are very exhausting to our bodies in particular because it consumes a lot of energy. Evolutionary biological changes increasing brain efficiency would take long time (btw, it is very educational to read about specifics of Enstein's brain). This is why in historical short term only increasing of energy intake seems to be a viable option.

VladRussian2··on Sergey Brin invests in synthetic beef
and he is spot on with artificial meat. The artificial meat impact on our civilization will be comparable with that of beginning of meat eating by apes 2M years ago.

Once more nutritious than natural, the artificial meat will allow to overcome the current energy limitation on our brain.

Once artificial meat becomes mainstream and eating natural meat become obsolete, the human race will be able to overcome obsolete concepts wrt. human/animal intelligence, which will have profound effect on social ethic and intelligence (the share of human civilization resources going into issues of violence, enforcement (of bad rules onto good people and good rules onto bad people), wars, etc... is staggering - more than half), and, in particular, as a side effect, will open our mentality to outside contact as well.

VladRussian2··on Japan nuclear body says radioactive water at Fukushima an 'emergency'
yes, they take society resources that could be spent otherwise on other issues, including whatever issues kill vegans
VladRussian2··on Japan nuclear body says radioactive water at Fukushima an 'emergency'
every time i drive to San Diego, i'm always struck at the view of this thing and how out of place it is and what could happen there. Seems common sense is winning as i heard they stopped reactors there and don't plan to restart.
VladRussian2··on Japan nuclear body says radioactive water at Fukushima an 'emergency'
>"conventional" power generation kills far more people than nuclear ever has.

and don't start on how many people cholesterol in burgers is killing

VladRussian2··on Japan nuclear body says radioactive water at Fukushima an 'emergency'
>aren't coal plants still the most economical from a market stand-point

only in the current environment there most of the cost of coal energy (green house gas and other pollutants emissions, environment destruction where coal is mined, etc...) is socialized

VladRussian2··on U.S. directs agents to cover up program used to investigate Americans
this is what i find wonderful about tptacek hair splitting posts - they lead discussion away from the main issue - illegal surveillance in this case - to minutae details like whether Stasi power to fight drug crimes can be [ab]used to fight other crimes.
VladRussian2··on Did Goldman Overstep in Criminally Charging Its Ex-Programmer?
"If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you before any questioning, if you wish."

it is when you're arrested. Until arrested - my understanding that one don't have to answer questions. Though personally i found it is really impossible to insist on your rights, i basically just chicken under stress : https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=6142434

that is my point - i never told publicly about the raid on our apartment until this post. It just things that happen and you're happy afterward that its over. I didn't and don't intend to flame it up as i don't want any further troubles.

basically NSA outsources "good government jobs" because of UK lax legal regime. Just like private companies shipping jobs to China :)
