Vixel··on Happy 20th birthday, Y Combinator
20 years? BRB, scheduling my ice float.
Vixel··on Twitter.com – Is Twitter Down?
Good.
Vixel··on X Is Down
Good.
Vixel··on Reddit Will Introduce Paywalls in 2025
Paywalls on people's content would work well if they have some type of revenue sharing, but paywalls on entire subreddits would be a disaster.
Vixel··on X users are unable to post “Signal.me” links
Garbage platform run by garbage people.

Vixel··on Ping: the atomized social media network
I just don't have time to learn or care about another social network.
Vixel··on Ask HN: Netflix doing mass layoffs today?
Fuckin greed everywhere.
Vixel··on Free IRS-run tax filing pilot to be available in 13 states
This is great, but a lot of people think it will be a Intuit or H&R Block "killer". It won't. People don't pay for the "expert" tax prep, they pay for the hand holding. I have worked for HRB corporate for years and have seen countless people with simple W2's that happily pay $100+ per year just to have an office to go to, to shake a hand and talk to a person about their past year. As long as there are lonely elderly people, these businesses will always be there.
Vixel··on Mistakes to avoid to build a better 1-person business
I can totally relate to these tips. I used to do in-home computer service and I advertised on self made signs all around the city. Got a lot of calls but not a lot of conversions. The minute I put "Business Computer Service" on the signs, I got the same amount of calls and nearly every call was converted into an appointment. And now that they had a reliable computer person, they continued to call. I was able to raise my prices by 40%, hire a few employees, get some funding and eventually sell the business. I'll never forget how adding that one word was liked a magic trick.
Vixel··on The Undeniable Street View
Incredible use of technology
Vixel··on California AG and state senators introduce bill to ban hidden fees
I wish this bill was "ban ALL FEES" period. Classifying something as "junk" or "hidden" sounds like a nightmare that plenty of businesses and industries will find way around. Get back to bottom line pricing, taxes included, and watch competition rise while prices fall
Vixel··on Hyperrealistic Deepfaked Tom Cruise in a Coffeeshop
AI celebrity porn will be here soon
Vixel··on Google combines Maps and Waze teams in restructuring move
This is great news! It's about time! I was so excited to see the instant, crowdsourced traffic news in the Maps app. I was shocked when they didn't integrate right away. I use Waze for most drives but then have to switch to Maps for better business info
Vixel··on Ask HN: What Recession?
Here in the US, our recession is apparent in every day life. Various issues are causing disruptions in our supply-demand balance, which in turn has caused many essential industries and businesses to remain under staffed. Many of the skilled people I know have been unemployed or under-employed for the better part of a year. This imbalance has also caused the prices of goods and services to be inflated, making it difficult for everyone, including the properly employed, to enjoy life without worrying about finances.
Vixel··on Use RSS for privacy and efficiency (2021)
I was a huge fan of RSS for a long time but stopped using it. I found that when I added in multiple feeds of my interests, My feed was littered with the same stories and sometimes even the same content. Also, much of the content had the same ads that were on the sites. So at that point, it was easier to just visit the sites with an ad blocker on.
Vixel··on Aegis Authenticator – Secure 2FA App for Android
I've always been aware of Aegis, but is there any reason to use this over the built in TOTP tool in a password manager like Bitwarden?
Vixel··on The Nevada national security site pt 1
Cool read, thanks. I worked in Mercury and all over the test site for years and miss all that history and stories from the cave dwellers.
Vixel··on YouTube currently testing 5 to 10 unskippable ads before video starts
If ads, or more ads, are bothering you that much, you're probably using youtube a lot and should subscribe to Youtube Premium. I've cancelled all my subscriptions except this one because it is an amazing value. You wouldn't believe how much better youtube is with no ads. And youtube music is pretty good as well.
Vixel··on Show HN: My Neat Portfolio Website
Wow, this is the best portfolio site i've ever seen. Mine is a tiny static page with a few css tricks
Vixel··on Ask HN: Why has Facebook stopped improving?
If it's broke why fix it?
Vixel··on Ask HN: When did tech stop being cool?
When everyone that knew how to access the Settings menu on their phone or power cycle a router are considered geniuses by everyone around them. My point is, tech being used by everyone now, even though they are just using the product instead of creating them.
Vixel··on Why restaurants in the United States just can’t get the staff
The restaurant culture is toxic and consumerism is killing it. When I started washing dishes, there was a clear dividing line between coffee shops, restaurants and fast food. Most people had their preferences and stuck with it. Slowly those lines have been blurred as the corporations pretty much have a template for what stores goes in any new shopping center. The people that grew up working in restaurants are used to very similar routines, no matter where you go to work. Long hours sure, but for well managed restaurants, those hours instilled a sense of pride that you will not find in the part-time, in/out, do everything workers that the average chain eatery will hire. The community based restaurants treated good workers as a asset, but the corporations are looking at the bottom line, so all workers are treated like a replaceable liability.
Vixel··on The next Google
Couldn't agree more. For the average person outside of our bubble, google "just works". They don't give a fuck about customization or the occasional ads. There are still plenty of people who click on the sponsored links without even knowing, or caring, that they are ads.
Vixel··on Alright, amigo, let's build some affordable housing
Je. Sus. Can anyone give an example of this process in another (easier) country? I guess what i'm asking is, is this a local, state or federal red tape issue?
Vixel··on Ask HN: YouTube – what do you think of the “shorts” feature?
Copy cat product, YT is amazing at organizing videos. Stick to that.
Vixel··on What data do the Google Dialer and Messages apps on Android send to Google? [pdf]
Apple (without any Google or FB apps installed) is definitely the lesser of two evils in that scenario.
Vixel··on How to Set Prices for Handmade Goods
I agree with all of this. I don't think people that sell their own goods realize that every situation has different COGS. So you can't price the product based on the market. Especially considering non-handmade items that can be made for pennies in bulk.
Vixel··on Famous Navy UFO video was camera glare, evidence suggests
The narrator sounds like an alien. That analysis is what they WANT us to think.
