Vitamin_Sushi··on Global shortage has led to motor oil rationing at Costco
My old Mercedes C240 (W203) took about 8qts for a single oil change. I'm glad I got rid of that car.
Vitamin_Sushi··on Dear people who work at the airport
Wait until you find out that even when scanning everyone's bags, the TSA's failure rate is around 85%: https://abcnews.com/US/tsa-fails-tests-latest-undercover-ope... Granted, this article is almost 10 years old. Even so, I highly doubt that this administration is willing to test (or report) the TSAs effectiveness.
Vitamin_Sushi··on Show HN: Airline pilot's interactive guide to aviation radio
Oh, now that makes more sense, thanks!
Vitamin_Sushi··on Show HN: Airline pilot's interactive guide to aviation radio
I love learning about nav aids on planes. One thing I didn't quite understand was the DME interrogation: "To handle conflicting pulses, each aircraft deliberately jitters its interrogation timing at random, then keeps only replies at a constant lag after its own pulses."

Does this mean that the pulse pair itself was jittered? As in, plane A sends a pulse pair, say 10us between the pulses and plane B sends a pulse pair 20us apart. The DME then responds with the same pulse pair delay and the planes listen then calculate the responding pulse pair to figure out which one is theirs?

Vitamin_Sushi··on Ask HN: What is your favorite YouTube channel for developers?
ThePrimagen and Tsoding. I don't watch their streams though; I usually just watch their main channel videos or snippets since I don't have time to watch a 2+ hour stream/VOD.
Vitamin_Sushi··on New accounts on HN more likely to use em-dashes
If I had to guess, it's probably an attempt to automate karma farming over time to make an account look legit later on.
Vitamin_Sushi··on Find Nearby Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR)
Traffic enforcement is abysmal in my city (I'm sure in many other places too), and our ever-increasing car insurance premiums reflect that. If there's a better way to enforce traffic laws or punish drunk drivers rear ending me and running off, then I'm all ears. Right now, the only other alternative I'm reading is letting the problem get worse.
Vitamin_Sushi··on Find Nearby Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR)
Maybe I'm still bitter about having my car being hit twice, both times being a hit-and-run which I was basically 100% on the hook for, but maybe I'm okay with this (provided it's only on taxpayer funded roads only)? Driving, at least in the US, is a privilege and you don't have a reasonable expectation of privacy out in public anyway.
Vitamin_Sushi··on 'A black hole': New graduates discover a dismal job market
n=1, but I graduated with a not so hot GPA so going into the market just before covid wasn't fun. Ended up doing "contracting" (still had a W2) with a really nice agency to get my foot in the proverbial door and eventually started working full-time as a software engineer, albeit in more of a support role. Working as a contractor wasn't too glamorous though (I could definitely say the same about the pay) as it was mostly writing and running automated test, but figured I had to start somewhere.

Is he going to start working FAANG making $300k? It'd be nice if he does, but it's best to keep expectations in check.

Vitamin_Sushi··on WeatherStar 4000+: Weather Channel Simulator
Love the WS4000. I've been meaning to make a WS4000 like application I can throw on my firestick and just have it play all day on my TV as a side project. As someone without any GUI or graphics programming knowledge, it's definitely been a nice learning experience.
Vitamin_Sushi··on Fructose in diet enhances tumor growth: research
I didn't downvote, but I can imagine that most people weren't aware of that claim. I'm skeptical of it as well since I'm not aware of any research that shows fructose in fruit increasing over time.
Vitamin_Sushi··on Playstation Vita Architecture (Part 1)
I miss the PSP jailbreaking scene. Back when I was in high school, I made quite the pocket change cutting PCB traces on people's PSP batteries. Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure that got me interested in electronics in the first place.
Vitamin_Sushi··on Cancer rates are rising in young people
The rate of incidents in GP's article show a large increase in the 90s.

Are you insinuating that covid vaccinees were available to the public at the time?

Vitamin_Sushi··on Ask HN: If you can't find a job(in tech), why not create one
Not sure what "tech" would constitute here. I've never ran a company before, but I would assume creating a company has a massive barrier to entry compared to working in tech. There are employees, legal, payroll, HR, and other such hurdles before you can even think about starting a tech company, not to mention the personal toll it'll take.
Vitamin_Sushi··on Costco starts to sell 'apocalypse bucket' with food that lasts 25 years
Nice!
Vitamin_Sushi··on Neofetch developer archives all his repositories: "Have taken up farming"
Good for him
Vitamin_Sushi··on Mongoose IM 6.2.1 – Erlang Solutions robust, scalable and efficient XMPP server
NOAA uses XMPP for sending out current weather conditions and alerts via either satellite or an XMPP server on the internet. I think the service is called NWWS.
Vitamin_Sushi··on Ask HN: Is Vim Dead?
For modifying text or configs on a remote machine? No. I'm still using vim for those tasks until neovim somehow becomes standard on servers.

I've never really used it for any kind of serious programming as trying to twist a modal text editor into an IDE by propping it up with all sorts of plugins cost me so much time that I just abandoned that thought.

I just use the usual IDEs for their respective languages (pycharm for python, intellij for Java, visual studio for C#/dotnet, etc).

However, I am giving the helix editor a go for programming since I still like vim movements and while helix has their own set of movement keys, it's pretty nice. It also has LSP built-in but I found it way easier to setup for programming than vim/nvim.

Vitamin_Sushi··on SomaFM
I know most people listen to the ambient and groove salad stations, but I absolutely love listening to the seven inch soul station while doing chores.
Vitamin_Sushi··on .NET 8 – MAUI
I love the fact that .NET and friends are open source, but my issue isn't with the licensing, it's with m$ funneling tons of resources on projects that (most likely) will end up being a dead end.

I'd also love if maui actually takes off since it does seem pretty neat, but until microsoft uses it for teams or any other of their clients, I'll pass.

They also aren't even targeting linux or web browsers, which doesn't really make this more compelling than Flutter.

Vitamin_Sushi··on .NET 8 – MAUI
Nope, not falling for this again microsoft. Once you actually start dogfooding your own GUI frameworks, then I'll bite.
Vitamin_Sushi··on Flipper Zero Self Destructs an Electricity Smart Meter
Interesting... I used to work on testing these old elster meters. Looking at the style number of this meter, it doesn't look like it's equipped with a disconnect relay, so at least he's not messing with that (even if a meter was equipped with a disconnect relay, the meter display should still be on during a disconnect event). I suspect he's cutting power to something other than the meter itself. I also see it's equipped with an energy axis (elster proprietary wireless network) so at the very least he'll be getting a fun visit from his power company wondering why he tripped various tamper detect flags in the meter (assuming his power company is actually ameren, a utility company in Missouri and Illinois and not canada like his yt profile says...). Since it also has that radio, I know it should also be encrypted. Unless that specific power company disabled LAN/WAN encryption... which we generally don't recommend and Canadian power infrastructure is pretty strict anyway when it comes to meter security. I'd be interested to see what exactly the flipper was communicating with (I'm sure my upper management would be even more interested as well).

edit: I also just noticed the meter is stuck in test mode and the backup battery is missing. You can actually buy these meters on ebay, which is what I'm suspecting this guy did.

Vitamin_Sushi··on Microsoft Teams is getting big performance improvements next month
This should've been the chance for M$ to finally start dogfooding MAUI. I guess even they decided MAUI is DOA.
Vitamin_Sushi··on Ask HN: How did you find your current job?
I used to be a contractor for the people I work for. One day I got a tap on the shoulder and was asked if I wanted to work full time (with actual benefits!). So that's where I'm at now.
Vitamin_Sushi··on Criterion: A cross-platform C and C++ unit testing framework
asciinema maybe?
Vitamin_Sushi··on Phoenix 1.6, RC0 released
Not op, but for me the official elixir site's guide help a lot. I actually read that side by side with Sasa Juric's Elixir in Action and felt like I got a pretty good understanding of elixir. For Phoenix, I've just been using the guide in phoenix's hexdocs and reading some random blogs about anything specific.
Vitamin_Sushi··on YAML and Configuration Files
The solution for defining a more complicated config is to write your own config file format? I would think a custom format wouldn't necessarily be easier for others to read and write unless it came with a guide/readme, but then that's just one more thing to learn. Admittedly, I've never had to write a super complicated config file, but can anyone tell me why I shouldn't continue to use something like JSON for all of my config files?
Vitamin_Sushi··on Microsoft confirms Windows 11 will only support 8th Gen and up CPUs
Seems like this list is still a WIP. At least I hope so, I don't see why my i7-3770 shouldn't be supported. If only 8th gen+ are supported, looks like there's going to be a lot of e-waste.
