1. Most roofs aren't flat. 2. For pitched roofs, you're only going to want to install on the south or west facing sides. So only some percentage of your roof area is ideal.

Some people don't like whiteboarding or timed pair programming because it's not close to a real-work environment.

Some people don't like take-homes that replicate scenarios/projects because they think it's too close to real work and want to be paid instead!

There's no pleasing everyone with interviewing processes.

VintageLight··on Ask HN: What's a side project you built to make money that hasn't?
This idea seems really similar to Detour, created by Andrew Mason and later acquired by Bose: https://techcrunch.com/2018/04/24/bose-acquires-andrew-mason...
VintageLight··on Tech elites leaving San Francisco threaten Silicon Valley's supremacy
You could build up housing density in the places that people work so they wouldn't have to commute.
VintageLight··on Why we decided against GraphQL for local state management
Agreed. React Context wonderfully handles state that will only ever live locally/"on the client".

I don't mind Redux for local state management, but it's a little overkill if you aren't using it already to handle API state.

Using Apollo on the client side makes me want to pull my hair out though.

You should choose the TN occupational category that will fit your job description and experience/education best.

They are ISOs. The standard PTE for most companies is 90 days.
VintageLight··on Unicorn layoffs keep piling up
The WARN Act is not severance! It requires that the company notify employees 60 days in advance of a mass layoff. They don't have to specifically notify the individuals being laid off.

There is no requirement for severance in California!

Carta's policy is that your PTE period is the length of your tenure. So those employees with > 3 years have > 3 years to exercise.
VintageLight··on Unicorn layoffs keep piling up
Carta (from the article) posted the benefits for employees who got laid off. They're pretty amazing relative to others. https://medium.com/@henrysward/cartas-covid-19-layoff-cbb80e...

If she is not your spouse, then she will not be able to accompany you on your TN visa. If she is your spouse, she can enter on a TD visa while accompanying you. The TD visa does not have work authorization so she will not be able to get a work permit. So to answer your question: Never.

However, being in the US will allow her more opportunities to interview with companies that may be willing to sponsor her on other visas that will grant work authorization.

Another route is the F1 student visa to OPT/CPT.

You must be an employee for the TN visa. As a founder, he would not qualify.

I went across the Canadian border for a TN1 last week via a pre-clearance office at a Canadian airport. There were no problems--business as usual.

There are denials at the land border due to COVID, though travel for work is considered essential travel.

The application for a TN2 for Mexican citizens is another story. I've heard those are all on hold.

CPT is a great option because it is a quick approval process only involving your school's advisors (only weeks vs months for an application to USCIS/DHS). The downside is that you need to be able to enrol in an internship course that is necessary for your degree, and pay the tuition.

Not Peter, but I imagine it would depend on the nationality of your cofounder.

I think you meant "disincentivize". I agree that there should be strong incentives to spread prosperity to smaller towns. Japan has an interesting tax program that boosts the small towns in the country: https://www.kalzumeus.com/2018/10/19/japanese-hometown-tax/
VintageLight··on Uber Posts $5.2B Loss and Slowest Ever Growth Rate
I recently spent a weekend in a major city without Uber/Lyft. Trying to call a cab company was terrible, relative to the user experience of Uber or Lyft.

After making my request, a few cab companies simply answered "Ok" before hanging up. I called them back to get an ETA, and their dispatchers would give me answers like "30 to 40 minutes" or "I don't know".

I wasn't out in the boonies or anything. I was downtown.

You could argue that they would get a one-month visa and top priority for that first month. The employer would have to go through the visa process again for the second contract.
