ViViDboarder··on Apple self-driving car engineer admits he stole trade secrets while he was there
That just means they can’t sniff anything in transit. If the laptop is managed by Apple (they were an Apple employee) they have full access to an endpoint.
ViViDboarder··on The downfall of smart TVs: From promises of seamless viewing to ad tool
Samsung displays them in the main menu unless blocked. I run a network ad blocker that takes care of it for me though.
ViViDboarder··on PyPI package 'secretslib' drops fileless Linux malware to mine Monero
Still doable with pyproject.

I actually wrote a Python tool for downloading binary releases from GitHub and Gitea and wrote a “builder” module that can be used in a pyproject file to tell it to download an arbitrary binary and run some commands.

Here’s an example in action: https://github.com/IamTheFij/release-gitter/tree/main/sample...

ViViDboarder··on Man who built ISP instead of paying Comcast $50K expands to hundreds of homes
My experience is a bit different. The roads where I live (San Francisco) are better than my AT&T options. Roads here seem to be repaved every 5-10 years and AT&T still doesn’t offer a plan that the FCC would classify as broadband to my house.
ViViDboarder··on Google Maps' moat is evaporating (2020)
Funny. I work at Yelp and this was one of the interview questions I was asked almost 10 years ago.
ViViDboarder··on SEC Charges Eleven Individuals in $300M Crypto Pyramid Scheme
I’d imagine they don’t target people who closet follow crypto but instead people who only think of it as “some high tech money thing making people rich”.
ViViDboarder··on Disney's mosquito control program
There certainly are, but they aren’t common. If you go for an evening hike July to October on Mount Davidson, you’ll know.
ViViDboarder··on Microsoft begins “Extinguish” phase of dealing with Open Source
There is a huge FOSS store. In fact, it’s been the default for obtaining software for over two decades now. It’s called “just download it from the website”.
ViViDboarder··on Microsoft begins “Extinguish” phase of dealing with Open Source
It’s not in conflict at all. The person may have the right to sell it, but not the right for Microsoft to list it.
ViViDboarder··on Sam Bankman-Fried Described Yield Farming and Left Matt Levine Stunned
At worst, a fraction of the value of all the companies physical assets and IP, which is significant. At best, fractional control over huge amounts of revenue that the company earns.

A share isn’t just some token, it conveys ownership of a public company.

ViViDboarder··on Including “And. And. And. And. And.” in a Google doc causes it to crash
To be fair, when vocalizing sarcasm, it is often marked by a particular tone. That tone is not easily conveyed online.
ViViDboarder··on Why isn’t there a decent file format for tabular data?
Is it possible to diff an image?
ViViDboarder··on SpaceX avoided a Russian jamming attack in Ukraine
Generally there are contractors employed in some fashion at all times on a broad enough contract who would be available to jump on something like this. Whether pen or they’d get the approval to ship it quickly is another story.
ViViDboarder··on Web scraping is legal, US appeals court reaffirms
I may edit and delete my information from LinkedIn, but I have no idea who has persisted that data beyond there.

There is such a thing as scraping responsibility and irresponsibly. Both kinds happen.

ViViDboarder··on Predicting Best Picture winners using coughs and sneezes
I had to do something similar in a Physics class of mine. We had to write a paper critiquing and arguing against a well known physics theory. I was really into Special Relativity at the time, so picked that one.

My professor was a Nobel laureate, so already pretty intimidating. After we each picked a theory and wrote an outline he asked that we review with him. Well, he said, “I don’t know why you’d pick that. That’s going to be too hard.” So I asked if I could change, but he said that it’s too late for that and wished me luck… I was more than happy with the C+ I got.

ViViDboarder··on Fish 3.4.0
For me, scoping in fish feels way more intuitive than Bash does, but quite a big margin.

Also, for some reason I never come across issues with it being non-posix. Maybe I copy paste less from online then other folks.

ViViDboarder··on A letter to Microsoft for not attributing authors of the Edge Flatpak app
One thing in noticed is that they say to install “Microsoft Edge Beta”, but the author seems to maintain “Microsoft Edge” on Flathub. Maybe I’m not following how releases work on Flathub, but is it possible that Microsoft actually does have a Beta version that they are publishing for the Deck?
ViViDboarder··on In-flight surgery with a coat-hanger and silverware
Wow, only £300? Private insurance in the US is so much more than that. When you get care, is a portion paid by NHS and the remainder from the private company? Or maybe the existence of NHS puts healthcare costs much less than that in the US.
ViViDboarder··on Geniuses of the past were aristocratically tutored
> School is 90% daycare so the parents can work, not really to teach kids.

That probably depends on each persons means to teach their own children.

ViViDboarder··on Why Single Sign on Sucks
I’ve been in this boat and have documented weird bugs and things that don’t work, but yet to write something about a working configuration.

I wanted to use mTLS for self hosted services and it took a while to come up with something that worked well in browsers, but apps on iOS and Android basically can’t use the certs making it fruitless.

ViViDboarder··on Uber funds new lobbying group to deny rights for gig workers
I don’t need cheaper rides on another unsustainable platform. I want to pay a reasonable cost for reliable rides.
ViViDboarder··on Uber funds new lobbying group to deny rights for gig workers
Canceling rides does destroy the system. The solution is to employ the drivers so that they have garantes and protections. Then you can tell them “you must take this ride”.

The issues with Uber is that they are trying to have it both ways. They want employees without paying for employees.

ViViDboarder··on Uber funds new lobbying group to deny rights for gig workers
There’s a huge difference. App developers given no ”jobs” by Apple and have to source and grow their own customer base as well as set their own rates.

Employees of a company or even contractors, generally don’t get to do this.

ViViDboarder··on Ragingbull.com to pay $2.4M for bogus earnings claims, subscription charges
Depends on where you signed up. At least in California, you must offer cancellation online for anyone who signs up online.
ViViDboarder··on Ragingbull.com to pay $2.4M for bogus earnings claims, subscription charges
I don’t have mine automatically renew. I had to go online and submit a renewal.
ViViDboarder··on Moscow police officers stop people, request their phones to read their messages
In the US plenty of news agencies have reported on leaked information that the government wasn’t fond of without being imprisoned. The case with Assange is a bit special as he sought out and helped people steal and release information that they were not permitted to release.

If he made an effort to truly remain separate from the sourcing of information, as most reputable reporting agencies do, then he’d likely not be in prison.

Look at the release of the Pentagon Papers.

ViViDboarder··on Cybercriminals who breached Nvidia issue one of the most unusual demands ever
Many free CI services have stopped being a thing because people exploited the free compute for crypto mining. That’s directly impacted a lot of developers at least.
ViViDboarder··on Wordle is pretty damn smart in many subtle ways
Actually, it’s 5x5 (typically). So five letter words again, just like Wordle. Again, likely not a coincidence.
ViViDboarder··on Lets Get Arrested (2019)
Un, this isn’t really like the others though. Making a JavaScript pop up, blowing up a building in a video game, and then your link is threatening to kill their teacher and then plotting a terrorist attack along with coconspirators in another country…
ViViDboarder··on Second Sight left users of its retinal implants in the dark
The restriction is really “use it or lose it”. I don’t see how that would influence anything. If they are investing and plan to use it, then they retain all value. If they chose not to use it, they can sell it to someone who will or release it into public domain.

There is still a huge potential for earning by investing in something like this, even with restrictions as described.
