VerminOctopus1··on Clicks – Physical keyboard for iPhone
I very quickly went from “that’s dumb” to “how do I order this?”, I have despised touch screen keyboards since they became a thing. I’m typing on one now, and I wish I wasn’t.

However I’m still on an iPhone 12 which is not supported. Hopefully when I upgrade they’ll have a superior version available. The ergonomics look goofy but I’m sure you adapt over time.

VerminOctopus1··on "Tech Billionaires Need to Stop Making Sci-Fi Real"
Seems to be working reasonably well for China. Or maybe that’s not considered “real” communism.
VerminOctopus1··on Chinese villagers capture video of falling Long March rocket booster [video]
Such an absurd thing to post. China is many things, but boiling it down to just “bad” is cartoonishly simple minded.
VerminOctopus1··on Study: TikTok Global Platform Anomalies Align with CCP Geostrategic Objectives [pdf]
How do they account for variation in demographics of the user bases and the potential that Instagram is also promoting/demoting certain types of content?
VerminOctopus1··on Nvidia CEO: We bet the farm on AI and no one knew it
Chalking it up to dumb luck is kind of ridiculous. They invested massively in developing an ecosystem for GPU driven computing, which was a well reasoned gamble, and it paid off.
VerminOctopus1··on The Case for Memory Safe Roadmaps
I don’t know how you can possibly come away with this conclusion after studying both languages. Maybe if your point of reference is an ancient version of Python?
VerminOctopus1··on Nvidia emerges as leading investor in AI companies
This line of reasoning makes no sense to me. This is a strategy to further entrench their product in the industry, not a ponzi scheme.
VerminOctopus1··on Omg.lol: An Oasis on the Internet
I thought community notes already existed as bird watch before the takeover?
VerminOctopus1··on The pro-Israel information war
Conflating nazis and children does not seem to be the logical masterstroke you think it is.
VerminOctopus1··on The pro-Israel information war
When the crisis was initially unfolding, I followed a few of the major subreddits, and it was entirely pro-Israel. It was kind of shocking how uniformly pro-Israel the comments were.
VerminOctopus1··on Greg Brockman quits OpenAI
…”Woke”? What does that have to do with anything?
VerminOctopus1··on Best Night Vision vs. Darkest Room [video]
Absolutely. I always wonder how these videos actually get made. Did the channel reach out to the military, or did some military PR arm reach out to the channel and ask if they were interested in showcasing night vision tech? Hard to imagine anything other than the latter, which is fairly insidious behavior.
VerminOctopus1··on DJI Mini 4 Pro
The US doesn’t have the engineering talent to pull off what DJI has.
VerminOctopus1··on DJI Mini 4 Pro
Zero?
VerminOctopus1··on NASA’s Webb finds carbon source on surface of Jupiter’s moon Europa
Mockery is deserved in this case. Not every cartoonish and outlandish claim needs to be engaged with seriously.
VerminOctopus1··on I made a transformer to predict a simple sequence manually
Why are people allowed to post this hateful culture war shit on this website?
VerminOctopus1··on Unlimited Kagi searches for $10 per month
There’s a lean towards thoughtful, educational content on Nebula
VerminOctopus1··on Chili Oil Notes
A crappy grinder will not work at all with espresso.
VerminOctopus1··on Homemade Sriracha
I found the flying goose brand to be quite awful and not at all a suitable replacement for the Huy Fong sriracha. To each their own I suppose.
VerminOctopus1··on Google Chrome just rolled out a new way to track you and serve ads
This philosophy of thinking every opinion deserves and requires reasoned critique while maintaining decorum is worse than any rude words. The opinion expressed by the author does not deserve more than the two words they were generously afforded.
VerminOctopus1··on Earth had hottest 3-months on record; unprecedented sea temps & extreme weather
Why is your life a nightmare? I’d love to hear more
VerminOctopus1··on Asking 60 LLMs a set of 20 questions
I coincidentally tried to get ChatGPT 4 to give me some chord progressions today. I was wanting some easy inspiration and figured that’d be a good place to start. I was wrong, it produced total nonsense. The chord names did not match up with the key or the degrees.
VerminOctopus1··on IBM to increase cloud costs in 2024
I worked on an initiative within IBM that was forced to use IBM Cloud. Not only would they not be my first choice, they wouldn’t be in my top 10 choices. And I can’t even name 10 cloud providers.
VerminOctopus1··on Ask HN: Why did Python win?
What about the design of Ruby makes it far superior?
VerminOctopus1··on Ask HN: Why did Python win?
pathlib is truly excellent! The overlap with the os library is unfortunate, but I can’t complain.
VerminOctopus1··on Ask HN: Why did Python win?
A bizarre opinion to be sure. Python is vastly more readable then Perl and is far easier to write as well, hence so many educators in schools reaching for it.
VerminOctopus1··on Fewer university students are studying Mandarin
I can’t help but think that if you’re doing business in China from abroad, it’s good to know Mandarin. Seems like a weird take to claim there’s zero value in it.
VerminOctopus1··on Hacker News Guidelines
This is a website for people in the tech industry, with additional focus on business. There are also subjects that simply cannot be discussed here (which is good). It’s those limits that constrain the conversation which makes this place “less toxic”. If it was a free for all where you could post anything, well, the place would go to shit immediately.

I feel like you’re attacking attempts at inclusivity in general with your comment, which seems misguided. Inclusivity and trying to accommodate people is not what causes toxicity.

VerminOctopus1··on The new science of meditation
I hope you don’t mean literal toxins, because that would be total nonsense
VerminOctopus1··on Architecture diagrams enable better conversations
I should probably learn C4, however, I’ve been having a great time just drawing arrows between squares with draw.io, labelling things as I see fit, without any real ruleset. This is how I generally design any larger feature and present it to the team. It seems to be well received, and being able to reference the initial architecture diagram when I want to remember how some particular system works is extremely useful. I think these diagrams risk becoming impenetrable and unpleasant to work with if they become too beset with rules and arcane visual language (see UML).
