VelesDude··on Google made me ruin a perfectly good website (2023)
My default is Duckduckgo but in the recent weeks they have massively upped how abrasive their ads are. Nothing wrong with there being search related ads but the sheer volume is getting out of control.

This was made more as an example of how much power Google has. While Google is not technically a monopoly, using any alternative is most likely going to hurt your potential reach. Essentially, damned if you do, damned if you don't with no middle ground.

I always sucks when you have to quote Steve Ballmers but "Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers! Developers!". At least in principal Microsoft used to get it.

I think they knew that without developers, Windows would be nowhere. Apple sort of gets it with the App store but not as deeply.

VelesDude··on The walls of Apple's garden are tumbling down
It is only a matter of time until Apple ends up selling this data to 3rd parties. The quarterly market performance demands endless growth.

Jobs always hated that the original Apple 2 had expansion slots. Woz wanted them because it would allow folks other than Apple to make things. You know, Woz being Woz.

Those expansion slots allowed Apple 2 to become what it was and practically made the foundation of Apple.

Jobs ended up tolerating expansion slots but tried to minimize their availability where ever possible.

More on localized tech that we use directly day to day. All the things you mentioned are big scale things that need large economic inputs, some larger than entire small nations to get off the ground. While they can impact us, they are things that are much more nebulous and vague to experience.
VelesDude··on The walls of Apple's garden are tumbling down
I'm not sure that it will ever go 'mainstream' but it looks like it will have a vibrant and stable future ahead. It is taking the slow boring but reliable path upwards. Better than crashing and burning.
VelesDude··on The walls of Apple's garden are tumbling down
It was bound to happen. Think about it. What was the last big application on the Desktop? Chrome in 2008 is probably the last.

The last really big advance in apps? Big new social media as you said? New communication paradigm.

Heck Smart watches where the real last big technology device and. Their sales while yes in the hundreds of millions are a shadow compared with things like smart phones.

I think we are seeing the entire industry calcifying around us. And a lot of folks know this. Thus the rush from a subset of folks that are trying to get in on the ground floor of anything tech like that they can possible pump and dump their way to riches. Crypto, NFS, AI over hype, VR, AR, Web 3 etc.

Soon we may have to accept that we are going form the fun fresh upstart stage to mature stable and boring faze. The entire tech industry will be IBM.

Apple, we "care about privacy". But we will take billions of dollar every year to keep your data funneled towards Google via the defaults.

Steve Jobs was barely out the door before Cook ran to allow PRISM access, something Job's had fought against for years.

Regarding No 2. That is very true but it is astounding just how much inertia is in the system that keeps iPhone going.

Turns out that the curated experience of iPhone combined with a lot of fumbles from various android vendors has kept iPhone image of being the best and most desirable phone.

It is very vaguely feeling like if another big player was to come in they could actually make some waves that causes everyone else to jump. To the benefit of the users. But I doubt that will happen.

It is also possible to keep safe guard in. You have to explicitly enable side loading side loading for instance.

I am down to Hacker news, local weather updates when I remember and the occasional wiki look up. A few podcasts . The local library is now more my jam.

I have been tracking my data use and last year it was only 70GB. And I have trimmed a bit more out of that since, especially on the podcast side which was the bulk of the data. It is getting to the point where I might just use my photo data plan which now has 120GB a year as it is more than enough.

I will take the wheels popping off occasionally over whatever that 8-dimentional abyss of hell that is Windows 11.
VelesDude··on Keep Out – WebGL Game
That is very cool, played far more than I thought I would. Great job!

I always found it funny when you would leave the store it would have this fade out/shrink animation. It is the same transition I have on my desktop windows and for a moment I kept thinking it was about to crash. ;)

On top of all the other examples, Hayazashi Nidan Morita Shogi 2 was a cancelled SNES games from 1995 that was going to us a 21MHz ARMv3 processor for AI. I just like the idea that they would throw in a processor that was probably about 5-10 times the power of the main system CPU.

That a very similar spec ARM processor would become the brain of the Gameboy advance many years later.

Come join us in the free world of Linux (and related systems)... even if the wheel do pop off for like no reason some times.
VelesDude··on Ask HN: Anyone else depressed by the relentless monetization and spying?
The cellphone is the one that concerns me personally the most. Even then I have locked that down as much as is viable. No needless apps. Deifnetly no social media. But there is still just the fact a locked baseband processor, operating system that you cannot fully verify and that mobile towers literally need to vaguely track you to function.

I also don't drive (never have) or have any loyalty programs. Only pay in cash unless forced otherwise. That said here is Australia some stores just use facial recognition - so that sort of defeats that a little. They paused it for a little while a few years back but I believe it is back in action now.

I'm not saying everyone can do this, far from it, but I choose to live by example. Maybe show others that you can at least shift your wants slightly. You move towards the ideal of utopia but do not expect to arrive there.

VelesDude··on Leaving Rust gamedev after 3 years
I remember years back someone form Microsoft calling the windows code base "The Abyss" because of how much technical legacy there was in it.

I think it was Steve Gibson who said that the Windows code base had some very questionable things in it. For instance they had work experience high school students working on code that made it into the final build that was less than spectacular. Like how Windows used to stall when you put a CD in and wouldn't proceed until the disc spun up and started reading data.

Windows 11 probably would still do that but I don't know because I don't have a disc drive any more.

Not surprised at all that this stuff sticks around. I find it very endearing actually. Ain't broke, don't fix it!
VelesDude··on Welcome to Scam World
Ed Zitron did a reasonable rant about why this is happening.

VelesDude··on Welcome to Scam World
Yeah, it is pretty bad in Oz now. My wife and I have fun every night playing our missed call messages to see what spam calls we got for the day.
VelesDude··on Welcome to Scam World
That is a neat exception that would be very handy. My phone now permanently lives in 'Do not disturb' mode as it at least filters based on contacts. But it doesn't help with other calls you want. It will still list the call in the missed call log but this is still not ideal.

Doesn't help with SMS though which is still 2-10 messages a day for all kind of junk.

VelesDude··on Leaving Rust gamedev after 3 years
It was a few years back that the question came up to the developers of a Call of Duty title. "Is there still code from Quake 3 in COD?". They dodge around it by saying something like "we cannot deny this but e use the most appropriate tech where needed".

While not confirmation, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a few nuggets of Q3 in that code base still doing some of the basics. That would be really cool if it is true.

It seems like unless you are someone like John Carmack or most of Nintendo, game dev tools are about what can get the best results quickest rather than any sort of technical specifics. It is a business after all.

VelesDude··on Ask HN: Anyone else depressed by the relentless monetization and spying?
Going back to Windows XP is wild. Just how clean and pure it is. Clean boot and fire up the network connection. It check for an update... and that is it. Nothing more. My last daily driver Windows was 7 in about 2009 and now my only hands on experience with it is via work.

I run Triquel one of the few FSF approved linux distro's and it still has that kind of vibe but its hardware limitations basically eliminate most people from using a system like that. But that is another side of the same issue of monetisation.

VelesDude··on Ask HN: Anyone else depressed by the relentless monetization and spying?
There is the possibility for there to be a non standard valuation. A few decades where neither the US or another currency is dominant. Personally I still see the US dollar as having a lot of strength but that can change surprisingly quickly once the flip happens.

I'm not worried about that at the moment but I have said, once the US dollar is no longer accepted at a random Thai street market that is when the US dollar is done.

VelesDude··on Ask HN: Anyone else depressed by the relentless monetization and spying?
This can come across as Whataboutism.

Whataboutism - 'The technique or practice of responding to an accusation or difficult question by making a counter-accusation or raising a different issue.'

VelesDude··on Ask HN: Anyone else depressed by the relentless monetization and spying?
For the most part I have adopted the trope of 'the only way to win is not to play'. By that, I mean checkout of online life as much as possible.

The issue is that if 95% of folks decide against building these systems of oppression, that 5% remaining will still build it. And then the other 95% will justify it as "If I don't, they will". The sign of moral corruption at work. And those that do it will always have a 'claim to virtue'. They are innovating this that and the other under the disguise of progress. The real question is, was it worth it?

The weirdest part is that Richard Stallman essentially spelled it out in full back in the late 1980's and almost nobody listened.
