Vaslo··on Americans increasingly see legal sports betting as a bad thing for society
Better said: people are lazy and would rather the quick buck than hard work
Vaslo··on Microsoft 365 Copilot's commercial failure
My company’s security and legal are super paranoid and cannot be convinced to let us use it. So already it’s a dead deal
Vaslo··on Reports: EA set to be sold to private investors for up to $50B
Immediate 20-30% jump in stock price if shareholders approve and can reinvest anywhere else. With a huge one day gain. In some cases, preferred shareholders get even sweeter deals.

If you’re an executive or board member with a tons of shares you make millions and can retire immediately (or at least after the transition you agree to is complete.)

Vaslo··on Traefik's 10-year anniversary
When I wanted to move to something besides NGINX proxy manager, it was caddy or traefik. At the time, tutorials for the clueless like myself were way more abundant for Traefik. Thats the way I went. Now I also have Authentik up in front and it works great.
Vaslo··on I Don't Want to Code with LLM's
I feel like we are still using it when cleaning up the code that we often get I guess.
Vaslo··on Altoids by the Fistful
You could write a hundred comments and it would still be quicker than this story.
Vaslo··on ABC yanks Jimmy Kimmel’s show ‘indefinitely’ after threat from FCC chair
Nah, reality is even simpler than your conspiracy. These late night guys are money losers and they are looking for a reason to drop them. The fact that they nightly insult 80 million potential viewers with their arrogant and unneeded leftist opinions is bad for business. It doesn’t matter how Jimmy and his leftist writer feel, that’s their business they should keep out of the job. They need to maximize shareholder value by putting on the best show possible.

It’s not about “Jimmy”, it’s about his audience.

Vaslo··on GNU Midnight Commander
I have it in a Docker container in UnRaid to move all my Media around. It’s great.
Vaslo··on Pontevedra, Spain declares its entire urban area a "reduced traffic zone"
Ah yes because massive events happen everyday therefore I should need to never ever have a car and choose the way I want to travel.
Vaslo··on Microsoft is officially sending employees back to the office
Not sure what they will do without you
Vaslo··on What to do with an old iPad
It’s down again btw.
Vaslo··on Leaving Gmail for Mailbox.org
If my wife and I both use Proton, or I correspond with a bank or company that doesn’t use a Google product, how would that possibly get into Google’s hands? You way oversimplified the possibilities here.
Vaslo··on Building Bluesky comments for my blog
The puck is not going to bluesky. Ads are back on X. Many who claim to have left have returned. Bluesky is the far leftist version of gab, no matter how you don’t like people saying that.

I’m among that 31M who signed up (as are many of my friends) and only the most left ones are still using it. I trolled for a couple of days until it got boring.

Vaslo··on Why MIT switched from Scheme to Python (2009)
It will never make sense to me to teach one language (Scheme) to learn one thing (how to program) when you can use a different language (Python) to teach two things (how to program, actual specific syntax you’ll use forever)
Vaslo··on Ask HN: What Pocket alternatives did you move to?
Self hosting karakeep and readeck - both are great with a slight edge to karakeep. Easy way to get into self hosting on a cheap or free VPS
Vaslo··on Archaeologists Discover Tomb of First King of Caracol
Same - it’s like when I was kid and thought we had visited every planet but meanwhile we’ve only been to the moon a few times.
Vaslo··on Archaeologists discover tomb of first king of Caracol
Bouncing off your point - I was at the Great Wall and someone told us that after the need for the wall disappeared, villagers were looting bricks from the wall to build the things they needed until the government stepped in to stop it
Vaslo··on I'm switching to Python and actually liking it
If you are working in Data Science/ML its the best bet for handling dependencies in your project compared to the rest of the tools. Its use has exploded, especially because you can do ‘uv pip whatever’ if you insist on using pip.
Vaslo··on Show HN: Vibe Kanban – Kanban board to manage your AI coding agents
Lol - nice find
Vaslo··on Ask HN: How did Soham Parekh get so many jobs?
This is what happens at top consulting firms. Top 5% interview skills, especially as smoothing your way through a case study. But when they actually come consult for your business, it’s just not what you pay for given what you’ve been led to believe with those case studies.
Vaslo··on People Are Being Involuntarily Committed After Spiraling into ChatGPT Psychosis
Not a single stat in this article. Just a bunch of anecdotes reminiscent of the never happening razorblades in candy on Halloween.

If you wonder why people are doubtful of certain elite journalism, it's hard to believe it when the only source is "sources say".

Vaslo··on uv: An extremely fast Python package and project manager, written in Rust
Moved to this and have no need for anything else, especially since uv pip install whatever works with uv and is faster than pip (though I usually use uv add).
Vaslo··on Show HN: TrendFi – I built AI trading signals that self-optimize
Seems like you could build the capital fairly quickly if your system works. And you should be able to have people invest in you if you show results.
Vaslo··on Time Series Forecasting with Graph Transformers
I can’t read the original other than what was quoted, but time series will never make you millions in stocks (or millions more than not using it) because time series uses past information to predict a time series, and much of stock pricing is already set via efficient market that those firms have already beat you to.
Vaslo··on "Microsoft Locked My Account – I Lost 30 Years of Photos and Work"
Amazing you bring politics into it. I’m glad the GOP and Trump live rent free in your head so it extends to everything you do.
Vaslo··on "Microsoft Locked My Account – I Lost 30 Years of Photos and Work"
There’s good advice and there is “being an asshole.” Unfortunately, many HNers don’t read their emails as the recepient does and they sound very preachy and condescending instead of helpful unfortunately(or maybe it’s on purpose.)

Your last sentence is exactly what the OP is talking about.

Vaslo··on Object personification in autism: This paper will be sad if you don't read (2018)
My small daughter is mildly autistic. Very friendly but overly obsessed with the life of bugs and very concerned about human like tendencies in bugs. She personifies other objects but it seems hard to tell if that’s just a child thing or one of her symptoms.

Even with the bugs I’m always wondering if that’s a kid thing too, but the fact the other kids her age couldn’t care less about bugs makes me wonder if it’s autism related.

Vaslo··on Why Pandas feels clunky when coming from R (2024)
One of the big benefits of polars over pandas is not dealing with the constant index nonsense. Can’t tell you all of the issues I had as a beginner with pandas trying to debug silly index errors.
Vaslo··on Why Pandas feels clunky when coming from R (2024)
There is also Nahwhals.

https://pypi.org/project/narwhals/#description

I tried really hard to use Ibis but I ran into issues where it was way easier to do some stuff in pandas/polars and had to keep coming out of Ibis to make it work so I gave up on it for the time being.

Vaslo··on Ask HN: Anyone struggling to get value out of coding LLMs?
For the mediocre coder like myself, it’s a game changer. Instead of finicking around with reading a weird dictionary schema in Python, I simply give a sample and boom I have code. Not to mention it shows me new ways of doing things that I was only familiar with and now does it by example, and then I have a better understand of using it. I’m talking about things like decorators and itertools.

I think it’s great for coders of all levels, but jr programmers will get lost once the llm inevitably hallucinates and the expert will get gains, but not like those who are in the middle.
