Varelion··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
Thank God we have a new technology that is aggressively using water, power, and making the world increasingly hotter.
Varelion··on Fable and the end of the free lunch
Yea. I can't stress this enough -- my life would need to be unquestionably on the line for me to give elon anything other than grief.
Varelion··on Canada will match US tariffs 'dollar for dollar' as trade talks break down
Canada needs to export banking services to us. I don't trust this country's financial institutions.
Varelion··on I'm becoming AI-blind
Holy shit, someone putting it into words
Varelion··on WPD won't replace stolen Flock cameras, citing public trust
A good sign, but I wonder if this will hold.

Varelion··on Anti-AI fonts are useless and harmful
OCR is a more expensive option, right? I don't think these fonts need to stop ai from being trained; I think they just need to make it more expensive and difficult.
Varelion··on AI didn't erase the junior engineer's value, it increased it it
I work at a workplace where the seniors use AI, and I am chastised for asking questions. I end up using the AI as a learning tool instead.
Varelion··on Anti-AI fonts are useless and harmful
Is there evidence shieldfont doesn't work?
Varelion··on The federal keyword lists that canceled billions in research funding
I love that analogy. Controlled opposition. A lack of action is the point.
Varelion··on The federal keyword lists that canceled billions in research funding
I fear I do not believe the US has that legislative strength, nor the will to build it. I want to believe that justice is still possible, but big E's island, and the lack of any justice has crushed any optimism out of my soul.

I do not see how a prosperous future is possible for my family, so long as that future is in the US.

Varelion··on The federal keyword lists that canceled billions in research funding
Today, I learned.
Varelion··on The federal keyword lists that canceled billions in research funding
Should be criminal.
Varelion··on I requested a copy of my data from McDonald’s loyalty program
I'm sick of greed, be it from people, companies, or their data hoarding practices.
Varelion··on U.S. economy lost 23,000 jobs in July, a sudden reversal
When you line the government with yesmen, they will taylor or they'll get fired, so I would expect HN to catch on that fast
Varelion··on U.S. economy lost 23,000 jobs in July, a sudden reversal
Who actually believes these numbers?
Varelion··on Prime Agent: A self-improving RLM agent
Calling this "prime intellect" is a choice and, honestly, I am very much here for it.
Varelion··on Not hiring junior engineers won't solve the problem you think you have
The goal is prevent homegrown talent, and give a reason to import H2B of offshore.
Varelion··on What's Behind the Sharp Drop in Labor Force Participation?
Beyond clear the latter is far more at fault than the former.
Varelion··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
Leaders profit off the military industrial complex. Take away that complex and they would certainly look for the next opportunity so bleed the working class, but the sham would be far more visible and less efficient. Either way, a massive stepfoward -- at least it wouldn't be there to actively make the world a worse place, as it has done exclusively post 1945.
Varelion··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
What a fucking joke.
Varelion··on White House's new upcoming model-testing framework
What sardonic and woefully glib comment. To think that this is in anyway going to help people -- or even the industries that are stepping on their necks, is really some wishful thinking.
Varelion··on White House's new upcoming model-testing framework
Trash in, trash out -- just like LLMs and data. Then comes to mind George Carlin's comment on politicians:

“Now, there's one thing you might have noticed I don't complain about: politicians. Everybody complains about politicians. Everybody says they suck. Well, where do people think these politicians come from? They don't fall out of the sky. They don't pass through a membrane from another reality.

They come from American parents and American families, American homes, American schools, American churches, American businesses and American universities, and they are elected by American citizens. This is the best we can do folks. This is what we have to offer. It's what our system produces: Garbage in, garbage out. If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you're going to get selfish, ignorant leaders.

Term limits ain't going to do any good; you're just going to end up with a brand new bunch of selfish, ignorant Americans.

So, maybe, maybe, maybe, it's not the politicians who suck. Maybe something else sucks around here... like, the public. Yeah, the public sucks. There's a nice campaign slogan for somebody: 'The Public Sucks. F*ck Hope.” -George Carlin

Varelion··on New HIV vaccine shows unprecedented success in preclinical study
Project 2025 vehemently goes against of it. Why was I downvoted? I am right. The american government strides in lockstep with P25 and corruption.
Varelion··on A Discord Alternative – Echoed

Varelion··on Judge Rejects Google's Attempt to DMCA Its Way Out of Being Scraped
This sums up every single bit of AI "progress" since 2022.
Varelion··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
So much for innocent until proven guilty.
Varelion··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
I really hate that these kinds of justifications almost always ends up to serve as a push for acceptance through apathy of the status-quo, as opposed to fueling that outrage that pushes for positive change.
