Vanclief··on The most satisfying checkbox
Totally agree, I even think that adding all this is not making the product better but actually worse.

I agree that making actions feel more rewarding is great, so adding some sound and maybe a bit of more design to the check box is great. One of the things I enjoy the most about my mechanical keyboard is the click that each keystroke makes.

But going all the way to create a 3D animation, that now takes seconds to go from unchecked to checked actually feels like making a daily process more time consuming and annoying.

(Or maybe I am just not human enough)

Vanclief··on Despite crypto layoffs, Kraken continues to hire
They also are looking "diversity of thought" over "stereotypical team diversity measurements".

It looks like to me that they are looking for people with common sense that don't get offended by everything and don't make everything a political issue. I hope we get more companies to do that.

Vanclief··on Why We Switched from Python to Go (2021)
You really don't need frameworks on go. You go and pick whatever tools you need like ORMS, http routers or loggers.

It is only a disadvantage if you want to have a framework.

Vanclief··on Down the mechanical keyboard rabbit hole
I have the same keyboard for about 5 years now, I type waaaay faster on the Kinesis than on any other keyboard hands down.
Vanclief··on Ask HN: What made your business take off that you wish you'd done much earlier?
Any recommendations on good books for marketing?
Vanclief··on Go Replaces Interface{} with 'Any'
I used to really hate that. After reading this amazing post https://middlemost.com/failure-is-your-domain I created a module that makes this bearable https://github.com/Vanclief/ez
Vanclief··on It's time for us in the tech world to speak out about cryptocurrency
Thanks for the thoughtful comment. I agree with you that we are not there yet, but that disconnect will eventually be bridged.

What we are lacking is a bridge between traditional finance and crypto that goes beyond what crypto exchanges offer.

I think it will take time before we get there because we need for institutions and businesses to start adopting it, but this has not been happening for a decade.

Ethereum is just 7 years old, and its in its infancy. I think we will need a couple of more speculative cycles before we end up with something useful.

Vanclief··on It's time for us in the tech world to speak out about cryptocurrency
I really don't understand the mindless bashing of cryptocurrency by Hacker News. Normally discussion here is quite rational and level headed, but there is something regarding crypto that makes people get very polarized.

First of all, I am not a Bitcoin maximalist, nor I am "brainwashed by a multi-level marketing sale pitch".

Bitcoin is just a prototype for a P2P consensus algorithm that has stood the test of time. It has MANY flaws, and it failed its original goal of becoming electronic cash, and instead it became kind of a digital store of value. Is it worth more than it should? Sure, but you could argue the same of a lot of tech companies.

The problem is most people think they understand blockchain, but they don't. They just think its for creating a meme currency that is a speculative bubble.

What blockchain enables us to do, is to create a trustless P2P state machine, on top of which you can build any Turing complete project you can dream of.

Instead of focusing on Bitcoin and Dogecoin go and check out Ethereum and projects like Aave and Compound. Blockchain will completely change the way we do finance, from how stock are traded, to how we transfer money. I am sure that it will happen in our lifetimes.

Vanclief··on Ethereum will use around 99.95% less energy post merge
It is a system where you have skin in the game, the more skin in the game you have, the more power you have. Think it like a democracy where you are voting with your wallet.

The main difference with the fiat world is that with Ethereum you have transparency, and there is no corruption. You can't just bribe a politician to enact a rule you want. Everything that happens in the network is recorded permanently, and rules are not a suggestion, but a practical reality that can't be circumvented.

Vanclief··on Ask HN: What are some tools / libraries you built yourself?
I think I am late to the party, but I built a very small package for managing Go errors after reading an amazing article on better error management. Its been a wonderful tool, that I now use on all my go projects.

Vanclief··on Ask HN: How to stay focused and motivated working from home?
I have found this works very well for me. While I use the same PC, I have double boot with Linux for work stuff and Windows for anything fun related.

Since everything that can distract me (except HN) is blocked in Linux, I am forced to reboot to access it which is a great deterrent.

Vanclief··on Creating the Go Programming Language [audio]
Or maybe because it is a useful and productive language?
Vanclief··on Algo trading digital assets
During this summer I performed a similar analysis with SMA and variations from it. My initial explorations looked very promising so I started saving market data and build a Python back-tester to test it. Once I applied exchange fees, slippage and simulated over longer periods things changed. I was no longer able to create a profitable strategy that performed well in longer time-frames over multiple markets. However its something I still want to work with.
Vanclief··on The confusing way Mexicans tell time
I think you nailed it. Ahorita == Soon
Vanclief··on The confusing way Mexicans tell time
That only applies if I have spent my entire life in Mexico, which I haven't. I have traveled the world quite a lot, and I have found many funny things, but this is not one of them.
Vanclief··on The confusing way Mexicans tell time
The only confusing thing here is how this got to become an article. There is no magical or complex thing about "Ahorita". In the states some people may tell you "Give me a sec" and have you wait for a couple of minutes. Yet I don't see an article saying "The confusing way Americans tell the time".

Unlike the author I know what I am talking about because I am an actuall Mexican.
