ValveFan6969··on AI overviews cause massive drop in search clicks
The clicks in question: "Here's a thirty page story of how grandma discovered this recipe... BTW you need to subscribe/make an account/pay to view the rest of the article!"
ValveFan6969··on We are no longer a serious country
Any second now...
ValveFan6969··on Britain's police are restricting speech in worrying ways
Complaining about restricting speech in a paywalled article is beautiful irony.
ValveFan6969··on Twitch star HasanAbi says he was detained, questioned by border agents
Don't shoot the messenger.

ValveFan6969··on Just use HTML
For those that missed it: the author overzealously uses swear words as a form of comedy.
ValveFan6969··on DECtalk Archive
John Madden!
ValveFan6969··on Firefox tab groups are here
I'd love to see Tab Groups, but what I don't love is how Firefox has lost their focus and vision. For years, Mozilla's mission was not only to provide a private and secure browsing experience, but one that was also lightweight and simple. Nowadays, it seems their idea of innovation is to just rip off Chrome's features.

ValveFan6969··on 4Chan was hacked and has been down for 4 days
Uncensored speech scares you like that, huh?
ValveFan6969··on Decreased CO2 during breathwork: emergence of altered states of consciousness
I'm a philosopher, not a medical professional. But I can tell you that philosophy and deep breathing are inextricably linked. Breathing deeply in of itself is a philosophical exercise, one that centers and grounds oneself in the here and now of the universe that surrounds you, and the universe that lies deep within you. It's a cosmic balance between the metaphysical and the empirical. As a philosopher, one must be able to breathe deeply, so one can breathe in, hold, and spew out the deepest and most esoteric pearls of knowledge unto the masses.
ValveFan6969··on AGI Is Still 30 Years Away – Ege Erdil and Tamay Besiroglu
I do not like those who try to play God. The future of humanity will not be determined by some tech giant in their ivory tower, no matter how high it may be. This is a battle that goes deeper than ones and zeros. It's a battle for the soul of our society. It's a battle we must win, or face the consequences of a future we cannot even imagine... and that, I fear, is truly terrifying.
ValveFan6969··on HDR‑Infused Emoji
This is a lot of technical mumbo jumbo for a simple thing like brightness. HDR is a gimmick like 3D TVs. The best image quality is not the one with the most colors, which is entirely pointless, but instead a simple image, with no fancy features that only serve to distract the eye.

Like in the famous case of the Apple logo in the 1990s. Steve Jobs, when asked why he uses a black and white Apple logo instead of a color one, said - "color will only distract the eye from what's important".

ValveFan6969··on HDR‑Infused Emoji
I don't have any interest in HDR. HDR is a very new technology that is just a gimmick. The human eye is barely able to perceive more than a few colors. Therefore anything above 16.7 million colors is not useful. And even that is overkill, 250-300 shades of a single color is more than enough for anybody.
ValveFan6969··on Making Software
I'm an Atheist, and I would like to know if AI models have the ability to detect sarcasm? Is there a way to make them understand that? Or maybe just give context in parentheses of something sarcastic I'm about to say? If I wanted to, can I just tell the AI that everything I am about to say is sarcastic? Maybe put quotation marks over the things I am about to say so that the AI comprehends the context?

If anyone has done this and made success, I'd really like to know how you did it and if there's any tricks to accomplishing that.

ValveFan6969··on Gemini 2.5 Flash
I have been having similar performance issues, I believe they intentionally made a worse model (Gemini 2.5) to get more money out of you. However, there is a way where you can make money off of Gemini 2.5.

If you set the thinking parameter lower and lower, you can make the model spew absolute nonsense for the first response. It costs 10 cents per input / output, and sometimes you get a response that was just so bad your clients will ask for more and more corrections.

ValveFan6969··on How refrigeration changed our food
Exactly... the real problem is how they're grown.

Frozen vegetables are less nutrient rich compared to fresh vegetables, because they lose nutrients while being frozen. And to be honest, frozen vegetables are frozen in the first place because those vegetables would have gone to waste otherwise.

So not only is their original state already compromised, they're then even more so when they're frozen.

ValveFan6969··on Zoom outage caused by accidental 'shutting down' of the zoom.us domain
Agreed. This is a whole lot of screw ups that I would have expected from the indie company down the street, not an ICANN accredited registrar. It's pretty pathetic when it takes public pressure for the ICANN to finally start doing their goddamn job.
ValveFan6969··on Are Americans Still Welcome in Europe?
Watch any travel vlog. Someone goes to China, Russia, Pakistan, you name it. The people are decent when you treat them decently. If you Europeans are openly showing distrust for Americans and Chinese simply for being American or Chinese, it might be a "you" problem, just saying.
ValveFan6969··on Open-source is where dreams go to die
Not everything needs to be a capitalist enterprise, author.
ValveFan6969··on The Death of the Web (2024)
Coming from the guy who shut down Facepunch forums with the snap of his fingers without a single ounce of care about all that content that would just disappear.

Complaining about a forest fire when you've thrown your share of cigarettes is rich.

ValveFan6969··on Russia amplified hurricane disinformation to drive Americans apart
What does a London based organization know about dialog in America?

Ah, must be the Russian fairies in my head giving me these doubts...
