VT_Dude··on Ask HN: Has anyone gotten complete, permanent relief from tinnitus?
Anyone's tinnitus can disappear completely at any moment. Don't despair. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33637222/

Mine was from getting squeezed from flying with a sinus infection. I got rid of mine almost completely most of the time with hyperbaric treatment. I had the journal article saying this is common practice in Germany that I used to convince my ENT to refer me to a hyperbaric chamber, but I can't seem to find it.

VT_Dude··on Former Coinbase PM charged in cryptocurrency insider trading tipping scheme
"Former Coinbase Employee First Ever Charged in Crypto Insider Trading Scheme"

There, headline fixed, first changed maybe, first committed no way.

Also, how quickly we forget about Magical Tux. Or is it not insider trading if you're on both sides of the trade?

VT_Dude··on Apple Music Announces Spatial Audio and Lossless Audio
Theoretica Applied Physics and BACCH Labs audition this exact demo -- A/B test by actually hiring a quartet and alternating the musicians playing with the speakers silent and the musicians silently air-playing and with the speakers playing. With a perfect image you literally cannot hear the difference.

VT_Dude··on Nuclear should be considered part of clean energy standard, White House says
I'm torn on which one second response is best. Contenders are:

1. Reprocessing is a better technological solution.

2. That waste is much safer in it's current location in a dry cask in the back lot behind a power plant than it would be on even the safest rocket.

3. Even if we punt waste disposal or reprocessing to future generations, we are still better off stacking waste in dry casks in the back lot behind power plants than burning coal.

VT_Dude··on Protein discovered inside a meteorite
Before we even get into the role of expert peer reviewers, does the article pass basic tests of authenticity, let alone extraordinary claims requiring extraordinary proof?

The third author of the referenced paper does have a page at Harvard, here: http://www.people.fas.harvard.edu/~mcgeoch/index.html where she says she is at the "Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Harvard University" but she's not listed as faculty in that department here: https://www.mcb.harvard.edu/faculty/faculty-profiles/

Could be a student... but do a search for Malcolm. W. McGeoch, Sergei Dikler, Julie E. M. McGeoch from Plex Corporation, Bruker Scientific LLC and Harvard University

and you will start to wonder if these people even know their names have been used in this article. Shame on phys.org for not calling the author for a quote or doing any other legwork to convince me this is anything other than a UFO hoax or the output of a paper-writing AI. It could be, but ...journalist please.

VT_Dude··on Boeing reports a $410M charge in case NASA decides Starliner needs another test
Boeing just posted it's first full-year loss since 1997. If you have to tell your investors bad-news, better to throw in all of the potential bad news that you were on the fence about than to have to make follow-up announcements. (Honey I totaled the car, and the other car may be out of gas, and all our toilets might be backed up.) https://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory/boeing-posts-annua...
VT_Dude··on Drugs fairly effective on novel coronavirus at cellular level
The "we're doomed" narrative has a whole different flavor if it's really "we're doomed, except we can prevent this with face masks and maybe-prevent and maybe-treat it with three different drugs that are all widely available and in mass production"

Remdesivir and Ritonavir make sense because they are HIV drugs, both HIV and coronavirus (and SARS) are retroviruses, and these drugs are antiretrovirals that were found to have significant effect against SARS.

Chloroquine is a malaria drug and that's a surprise, but kudos to somebody for being up on the literature because there it is in Pubmed, Chloroquine might do something on coronaviruses. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/14592603-effects-of-chloroqu...

Also, no story about coronavirus drugs is complete without a shout-out to this legit researcher, whose story is "I gotta get to Wuhan to test these drug candidates before this outbreak is over." https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-00190-6

VT_Dude··on Raspberry Pi 4 WiFi stops working at 2560 x 1440 screen resolution
Former communications semiconductor FAE here. We would troubleshoot issued like this all-day every-day for years, usually under NDA before the product is ever released to production. The solutions are routinely as weird as some of the "voodoo" hypothesis tossed around here - wait for it and you'll see. After a while it seems normal that all unverified combinations are broken and the moments of delight are when an unverified configuration completely works.
