UserRights··on OVH threatens to leave if latest French surveillance law passes
Good question!

Is there any organization that works on an regularly updated list of states and their current surveillance situation?

if not, should this exist?

E.g. awesome-bigbrother

You are using a very provocative form for pointing at a very interesting detail here - yes, these people are trying to fix things:

However, to work well for the typical computer user, we’ll be focusing on an easy-to-use system, with stable, reproducable system installs and atomic upgrades. This will most likely be done using OSTree [1], which is like Git for operating systems.

Does this distro offer transactional updates with rollbacks or is it still depending on update ideas from the stone age?

Archlinux is a very good distro, but I do not understand why they are forcing users to read update instructions (boooring!) and replicate these instructions manually - seems bizarro to me: to update a computing system, something that was invented to replace tedious manual workflows in the first place, every single user is forced to replicate manual instructions (sometimes).

It's the same with thousands of technical blog writers out there, writing long articles about how to configure your system or "how to install x, y, z on a, b, c" - in all seriousness they want you to copy and paste computing instructions manually into your machine - this looks like an interesting steam punk counter-culture phenomenon in the age of the rising devops revolution...

Is it a psychological mechanism, lying deeply in our genes, that helps our species not to develop to fast? Is there some "evolution retardant" in our substances that forces us to not adopt new things too fast, as they might be wrong? Many people are still programming in C and we are having the same problems like 30 years ago in computing, what seems to be enough of evidence for the existence of such an invisible evolutionary regulator.

Can't we have a linux distro that sends out updates via punchcards, sent to you with a monthly magazin that contains lots of manual input instructions for your modern device (and a lot of comics)? Let's call it NeanderOS or Mammutix. Any VC interested? Let's make this the next big thing!

Have a nice sunday!

UserRights··on Tabvention – Manage Your Browser Tab Addiction
One reason is trying to follow a HN discussion. I do not see a better way to do this than keeping several tabs open with topics I would like to recheck a few hours later.

There could be other ways doing this and I have some ideas, but right now multiple tabs seem to be most practical solution for this.

not the same, but has a similar impact.

However, it still does not solve the underlying problem, but that is a non-technical one and can only be approached with some kind of yoga, meditation or any other self-control trickery.

BTW I found http://debops.org/

But still I think it would be a great idea to have a community playbook for critical things like mailservers where it is so easy to make a mistake and the fight against spammers is so hard to fight when you are only a small group of people or alone.

What do people (you) think about browser based log viewers like e.g. logio.org? I like to comfortably have all the logs in the browser but do not want to go full ELK (or anything in this category) stack just for a few servers. But I am not sure if there is some better solution? Multitail is great, but sometimes just opening a new browsertab is even greater...

UserRights··on Best Linux server backup system?
This tool certainly looks interesting and does support several sources for the backup.

I was describing a meta tool that would act like an experienced backup admin and setup the whole process / environment. E.g. this tool would configure network shares or a webserver with authentication to access the data, that deltaic restored.

However, such a tool does not exist, so I will study deltaic when there is some more time to waste with backup research. :)

UserRights··on Best Linux server backup system?
I found the most important idea regarding backups was to stop searching for the one perfect tool that does it all. The most productive step was to accept that for every [group of] machine[s] and every application / scenario there are different best solutions.

Unfortunately most backup software designers seem to think in an extremely one-dimensional way about how backups should work and I do not know about one tool that offers all the flexibility you need for real life backups.

There is really room for invention here.

IMHO BackupNinja shows the right direction: it is a meta-tool that helps you to manage several different backup strategies. This is the way to go, but it should be generalized and have an API and several GUI options (web, qt, rest).

Also some more brain could be put into the application, like a nice wizard will ask you to define how you would like to have your backup and select the right tools for you:

  [ ] source
  [ ] it is a database
  [ ] which one: ________________
[ ] very big files (oh, I already know about this)
  [ ] Mickysoft client
  [ ] Outlook
[ ] other crapsoft that needs special handling
[ ] look up the plugin repo for the best way to handle this
  [ ] Linux / *BSD
  [ ] destination
  [ ] encrypt backups
  [ ] versioning
  [ ] frequency
[ ] make backup files browsable by filesystem tools
[ ] also browsable for users (readonly)
[ ] make backups available via samba
[ ] make backups available via nfs
[ ] make backups available via web gui
  [ ] where to browse: ________________
[ ] import csv with usernames
[ ] auto-generate login link for users (no future support hassle)
[ ] decide which is the best (set of) tool(s)
[ ] and just do it and let me do the real work
Certainly there is some more to it, but maybe you get the idea.

If you are bored and do not know which should be your next project, please release the world from all these backup pains (and wasted hours and weeks) and build it, thanks! Good Luck!

A little late to the party, but I would like to ask:

is there still some research going on in the areas of psychology and programming? Not AI, but how the state of the programmers mind affects collaboration, the quality of the code and the general outcome of projects?

Any hints and links would be very appreciated, thanks!

Well, I have to come back to you with a few very basic things that should change immediately if you want to show respect to users and their privacy and would like your business to be taken serious by NGOs and political activists around the globe:

* there is NO https://democracyos.org/ - how deep are your tec guys sleeping???

* please remove the privacy invading tracking links from your website. All of them. Now.

These two issues would be most important to gain some credibility in Europe, where most people still do not accept to have their web privacy delivered to x companies without being asked. This is especially true for a site that offers discussion about political issues - a very heavy fauxpas and you should stop doing anything else and prioritize fixing these issues, these are absolutely vital things for a "democracy enhancing platform".

* I can not download your manifesto pdf without logging into slideshare.

Here again I am forced to pay for your pdf by giving user account information. Why are you letting a third party company take your pdf documents as hostages? I am sure your web servers will not die if you just let people download the pdf from e.g. https://democracyos.org/manifesto.pdf

These things should change before you open your site to the wider public - too many people will see these as proof for "business guys hijacking democracy software market".

UserRights··on Why Y Combinator Funded a Radical Political Party in Argentina
From your description I am missing one important idea that you should communicate clearly: you, we and nobody else currently wants to have online voting - what we want to have, are tools that enable transparency and gathering of information, also discussions and preparation of decisions, but the final decision is something you do NOT want to do online.

See this talk from 31C3: http://media.ccc.de/browse/congress/2014/31c3_-_6344_-_en_-_...

If you still believe that online voting is doable and a great thing, please contact Mr. Halderman and talk to him or read about his work: https://jhalderm.com/

Also I recommend to do some research what the german pirate party is using regarding democracy tools - they have a lot of experience not only coding such tools, but also with real life usage.

A good start could be https://liqd.net/en/ here you can find the adhocracy platform: https://github.com/liqd/adhocracy/

which seems to be in a much better developed state than what I see on democracyOS - but maybe there are many things not visible right now to me, so sorry for this criticism.

Adhocracy is currently in use by several organizations and they have lots of real life experience, especially with user adaption.

An interesting application of adhocracy is https://offenekommune.de/

Another interesting tool for organizing (really big) meetings: http://openslides.org/en/

and of course the brilliant idea of Bundes-Git, a law-making platform: http://okfnlabs.org/blog/2012/12/13/bundesgit-german-laws-on...

Maybe the best way to get some overview would be to contact the awesome people at https://okfn.org/ - good luck!

OVH quality seems to be changing dramatically. I tested one of the new vps offers and it was totally laggy, with freezes and disconnects. But what really disappointed me was the fact that I got zero reaction from OVH support, even after three emails - seriously, no reaction. This is new to me, they have always played very well, but this was very bad.
UserRights··on Ableton Live Developers at Work [video]
Becaue Ableton Live is not available for Linux, I finally tried Bitwig Studio, what was a very refreshing change of perspective. Before I tried it I had lots of doubts and a feeling of "no, this can never work out, you need Live, nothing can be better". But it was a big surprise - it feels like Live done right, without the awkwardness. Since then I am so happy that I can use pro music production software on top of linux, I have not looked back into my Ableton setup for months now.

Linux is such a win for me, works much better, most stable, quick and fluid system I have ever used, I do not want to change back to windows or osx. I hope Bitwig will survive and finally bring some more long term attention to the linux audio stack, which seems to be much better choice for making a computer a music machine.
