UqWBcuFx6NV4r··on Python's pre-declared constants are kinda weird
You don’t like working with data scientists. The data science Python ecosystem is really a separate beast that’ll have “normal” coders scratching their heads at the best of times, some of the most popular packages do all sorts of metaprogramming, and the standards for code quality are very different. Don’t blame the language. Well, blame it only in that it allows such things in the first place, which does have some very nice precipitations now and again, as well as some very bad ones.

In an age where people are still standing by C over memory-safe systems programming languages, I feel quite comfortable depending Python for the great many things that Python is good at.

UqWBcuFx6NV4r··on Python's pre-declared constants are kinda weird
Holy 2000s! Are we really still doing “programming” vs “scripting”?
UqWBcuFx6NV4r··on Why some US restaurants are banning tips
I’ve spent about five weeks in the US split across two trips. At home, I eat out very very regularly, at both very nice and very shabby places, and varied places. I pretty much immediately came to your conclusion… within hours of each visit, if not less. it’s so jarring, and artificial, and tacky. I can’t imagine being so delusional as to have any of this stuff be a positive experience. I hate it. And I’m far from an introvert, but these social interactions are not genuine and they go out of their way to make you feel like you’re superior. I hate it and I think that it says a lot about the US. It’s part of what makes me just have a background feeling of being on edge the entire duration of my visit, in a way that I’ve never felt in other countries, even those that have a much larger cultural difference from my own, and that I should really feel less ‘at home’ in.

If anyone said this about the country that you’re from (based on this attitude, we all know what my guess is) you’d immediately clock how absurd it sounds.
UqWBcuFx6NV4r··on How a Texas student blew the whistle on a rogue AI hacking attempt
Nobody was confused or misled by what was written. We all understand what is meant. I can’t even call this pedantry—it’s just you asking everyone to subscribe to your particular desired style of talking about this stuff.

People write like they talk for effect. This is very, very common in the real world.
UqWBcuFx6NV4r··on We Rebuilt the Linux MicroVM Stack on Apple Silicon
Hacker News is so utterly detached from reality at times, and comments like these really drive that home.
UqWBcuFx6NV4r··on Claude writing a macOS driver for my obscure HP printer built only for Windows
This isn’t “AI psychosis”. Stop this. Stop corrupting the definition of “psychosis” by pretending that “AI psychosis” can just be used as a descriptor for anyone that thinks that an LLM can do a thing that you don’t think it can. Any use of the term “AI psychosis” in all but the strictest sense is a huge red flag that someone’s objection is based on philosophical or political grounds, and your objection is a textbook example of that.
UqWBcuFx6NV4r··on Companies promote incompetent employees to management to limit damage they do
Yeah, and i’m going to take a stab in the dark and guess that it’s the first one much more often than anyone here would like to admit.

Developers love to act like they understand every other profession and skillset, just by intuition. It’s not incompetent to do things that you wouldn’t do, or to do things that upset you, or to do things that don’t put your desires first.

UqWBcuFx6NV4r··on Claude: System Prompts
You don’t know that unless you’ve compared performance.
UqWBcuFx6NV4r··on Claude: System Prompts
I don’t see how that makes much sense at all. Even before reasoning processes were hidden (unless you really sought them), I’ve never once seen a model refer to its own specific comparative superiority or inferiority, except for when I explicitly direct it to via e.g. my own CLAUDE.md
UqWBcuFx6NV4r··on Anthropic's ‘watermark’ text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing

Citation needed. This is sounding tautological.

UqWBcuFx6NV4r··on Nine PBS sues Iron Mountain over blocked access to archival data
Holy reading comprehension and assumption creep! Nobody said that it was OK. But losing data and losing access to the data is clearly not the same thing. That’s why this clickbait headline decided to say the former instead of the latter, because it sounds worse. Read the article.

Yes there would. It makes perfect sense to refresh one’s understanding. You’re within your right to be grumpy about doing training, but that’s not the same thing as there not being legitimate intent behind it, let alone it actually being a good idea overall. Not everything on earth is catered to you specifically.

Sorry, you’re just uncultured if you don’t understand that understandings of different “foreign” cultures differ from place to place.

I don’t even agree that the use of the term “beef patty” should be regulated just so you don’t confuse a dumb tourist lol. Getting something you didn’t expect is part of travelling. But YOUR comment is too condescending and hypocritical to NOT draw attention to, and it’s a type of hypocrisy that’s endemic to North America. You tell someone from the US that you don’t know Spanish or some aspect of Mexican culture or something like that and if they’re snooty enough they’ll call you an uncultured trailer park hick or something. Put another 1,000–2,000 km of distance to the cultural reference you’re making and you’ll get blank stares.

I live in a country that’s far further from the Caribbean, where it makes up an insignificant part of our vast multicultural landscape. Don’t act like I’m “uncultured” due to something that you’re much more likely to know about due to your geographic proximity.

UqWBcuFx6NV4r··on How Google helped destroy adoption of RSS feeds (2023)
can’t wait to hear about how some 9/11 truther blog was the cream of the crop. I’m surprised you can see anything through those rose coloured glasses.

the most charitable interpretation is that the internet used to more exclusively cater to your interests specifically, which i’m sure is true.

try asking most women about the internet then vs now. there are still scumbags, and one could reasonably argue that they’ve gotten worse, but at least theres more to do now.
