Uninen··on Ask HN: Who wants to collaborate? (April 2022)
I've been working for the past few years to build better (and free) tools for DJs and artists. I'm interested in the mixing (pun in tended) of arts and technology, and in creating communities in healthier spaces than Facebook, for example. It would be fun to find other artists to share ideas and collaborate on projects.

In addition of the most visible project which is a streaming site for DJs called Slipmat.io, I've also built a ton of related tooling around the process of planning, preparing and hosting (live) radio shows, for example:

- Playlist parser for converting playlists from DJ software to text and/or HTML for aftermarketing: https://playlists.slipmat.io

- POC show scripting app for collaborative planning of radio shows: https://scripter.labs.slipmat.io

- POC app for planning and organizing (virtual or physical) festivals across several timezones: https://eventplanner.vercel.app

- A tool for DJs to take requests during live events using their DJ app music collection as a source for listeners to search from (early demo from 2017: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9HkLoKrTqs )

- A simple desktop soundboard app w/ MIDI-control: https://github.com/slipmatio/soundboard

I have a vision of building basically the GitLab for artists: a comprehensive tool stack for collaborative planning and playing live shows, marketing, and connecting with listeners, all in one easy to use place.

The current stack of all my projects is Python (Django, Starlette/FastAPI) and TypeScript (Vue). I've recently started to re-write the older stuff and in the process open source the parts. All the recent projects are now on GitHub: https://github.com/slipmatio

If you're interested in collaboration or testing out some of these tools, you can contact me either by email ville @ the project domain, or ping @uninen on twitter :)

Uninen··on I’m Disappointed with 1Password
I've been a 1Password customer for over a decade. I've also brought them lots of consumer and business customers as I've taught people and companies I deal with to use password managers, and I thought 1Password hit the sweet spot of good usability and security.

But I cancelled my account a couple of weeks ago. Their product has been worsening over time, and the last adventure of aligning themselves with the (wrong kind of) crypto bros was the final straw for me.

I'm not really familiar with Bitwarden but it is open source and I managed to import all my data in one go from 1Password so I'm testing that for now. IT feels good to support open source at least.

Uninen··on Ask HN: Can Firefox be revived?
I'm baffled that despite years of asking, Mozilla doesn't have voluntary subscription option for the FireFox browser. I'm not interested in paying for VPN or any other related product but I definitely would be interested in directly supporting FireFox browser development. As a Web developer, paying for my tools is not an issue for me, conversely, I'd be happy to do it.
Uninen··on Introducing raspberrypi.com
Unrelated but I wonder how far is the next major Raspberry Pi version. It's been over 2 years since the last version.
Uninen··on How to Build a Low-Tech Solar Panel?

What a lovely idea.

Uninen··on Why the Wuhan lab leak theory shouldn't be dismissed
There's a recent episode of Joe Rogan podcast (#1616) with Jamie Metzl that goes quite deep in this very topic: https://open.spotify.com/episode/7aitKgecZ0fPKjT15no5jU?si=h...

He's also published a blog post titled "Origins of SARS-CoV-2" on his Web site: https://jamiemetzl.com/origins-of-sars-cov-2/

Uninen··on Why Is Esbuild Fast?
Vite 2.0 (a build tool like Webpack or Rollup, and powered by Esbuild) was just released earlier today. It's seriously awesome.

I first learned of Esbuild early 2020 when I complained on Twitter that JS build tools are awfully slow [1]. Most my (mainly Vue) projects use Webpack and starting the dev server takes typically anywhere between 5-50 seconds.

With Vite, cold devserver start in a mid-sized project on my 2015 MBP is ~2-5 seconds, but vast majority of the starts happen almost instantly as the deps are cached. Hot module reloading and most changes is also very fast and feel instantaneous (where in Webpack projects they would take anywhere between 1-20 seconds). This has HUGE affect in developing experience as you can just keep writing and almost never need to wait for any changes. (The one exception being TailWind/PostCSS builds that take few seconds every time the config or main import changes.)

I absolutely love Esbuild and Vite. Been using them daily for few months now, and I'm currently in the process of converting all my old vue-cli based projects to Vite using a project template I made that has TypeScript, Tailwind, and e2e tests w/ GitLab and GitHub CI configured [2]. If you work with React or Vue and Webpack and haven't yet tested out Vite or any of the other Esbuild based build tools, definitely do check them out!

Uninen··on FOSDEM 2021
Excited to see plenty of WebRTC talks in there. 2020 was a huge boost for WebRTC but I think 2021 will be the year for lots of innovation around it now that the tooling has started to mature and the browser vendors are actively on it.
Uninen··on CodeMirror 6
Interestingly the source is pure JavaScript and not TypeScript.

The tooling support that TS enables would be a huge thing for (the users of) a project like this.

Uninen··on Terms of Service; Didn’t Read
Are there any examples of minimal human-friendly Terms Of Service texts that one could use or adopt to their own projects?
Uninen··on Element – All-in-one secure chat app for teams, friends and organisations
I tried the iOS client yesterday but could not log in (to a well-known third-party server) and the app just did not work at all. The error stayed on the login screen no matter what I tried, and it did not offer any debug info or help, and I just couldn't get past it.

I've been developing software for 20 years so I know something about buggy software and different stages of completeness so I usually give open source projects more slack but after 30 minutes I just gave up and uninstalled the app.

I really hope these kind of projects get more funding and wind behind them to get a bit more mature so there would be serious alternatives for the likes of Whatsapp.

Uninen··on Electric cars make up 54% of cars sold in Norway in 2020
A bit off-topic but I've been wondering how well self driving technologies will work in Nordic countries where the roads look pretty different in summer and in winter. At least for me, the one of the biggest interest for Tesla comes from its (current but especially future) self driving capabilities.
Uninen··on Ask HN: Who's looking for a co-founder?
I've been working on a live streaming site for DJs and artists ( https://slipmat.io ) for past 4 years and the project is now in a state where it should probably be incorporated to get it to next level.

The current site is a state of the art basic streaming platform with a ton of bespoke functionality for artists, and I have lots of potential ideas for building new features for more higher end segment willing to pay for them (like gig booking and more interactive virtual shows).

This project is a very much an open source mindset and during last few months we’ve started to publish our first open source packages. My hope would be to be able to make everything sustainable as an open source project by the community for the community.

I’m looking for someone who could help me either build this forward or help with business side of things and raising money for building the business itself. I’m capable of handling the technical side of things but to get to next level we would need more both deep backend and frontend knowledge. I’m located in Finland, but everything in this project is set up to be remote first and location or timezones should not be a big problem.

Uninen··on Avoid using wood burning stoves if possible, warn health experts
I remember reading Fireplace Delusion by Sam Harris [1] (it's about religion, but uses the fireplace as an analogy of harmful thing that people in some sense know that is harmful but still keep enjoying and using) a long time ago and have been thinking the harmfulness of burning wood ever since. It's weird how hard it is to take news like this in even though it's backed by actual science. I just like the smell and the type of the warmness that a wood stove (or a fireplace) creates and would use them instead of electric stove or heaters when given a chance.

I'm pretty sure people can't be cured of brain bugs like this after some age or some degree of conditioning (in the sense of "it's always been like this and I don't want to change"). Hopefully the next generation is raised better based on new data and will be smarter than us. (Or at least me.)

Uninen··on We rendered a million web pages to find out what makes the web slow
Sad to see Sentry on the bottom 5 JS heap size list. Love their service but the JS payload is pretty massive.
Uninen··on Firefox Was Always Enough
> Mozilla doesn't have a real sustainable business model right now.

I've said this many times and I'm going to repeat it again; I wish Mozilla would offer me a way to purchase a monthly subscription for Firefox.

I want to support the open Web and I want to support FireFox development (but not any n+1 random Mozilla products / experiments) and I hate that they don't offer this.

Uninen··on Sponsored Top Sites with Firefox 83
I wish Mozilla would let me pay for FireFox. I care about the open Web and would gladly pay for one of my most important tools.
Uninen··on Show HN: PiratePx – Open Source Privacy focused analytics
I've often wondered why there are so few server-side log parsing libraries (for the likes of Nginx and Apache). Putting that 1x1 pixel image on your front end and serving it from a host that only collects and aggregates anonymous logs about pageviews of each URL would be the best simple analytics most Web site owners would need. Basically the Netlify analytics without the $9 /month/site price tag.

(Yes, it would obviously need a bit more than just a log parser but that would be the easy part, IMO. Separate the backend from the front and let JS folks write their own UI for This Weeks New JS Framework. Maybe you could even use PiratePx as the frontend.)

Uninen··on Early access to Proton Drive is here
> I wish they would focus more on email

I'm a fairly new user and I feel the same way. For me the product would be much better if they would put more effort in the email client itself and keep these addons in the background (development-wise).

Still, I like the fact that I'm paying for the product and that Google is not reading those emails.

Uninen··on Chat Bubble Blindness
You can block the offending domains with uBlock Origin or similar tool. It's a relatively small effort to block the most used ones after which you won't see most of the popups anymore.
Uninen··on CI/CD on a budget for open source projects
You can do everything mentioned in the bullet points (CI service, test, build environment, docker image repository, code quality, coverage, metrics) except running the production code for free on Gitlab.com or self-hosted GitLab instance.

Edit. Serious question: why would you want to set up and maintain several different tools when you can have everything running in one place?

Uninen··on Janus WebRTC Server
Well, at least the GitHub page stays up under the traffic.
Uninen··on Hypermodern Python
Sad thing is `poetry init --no-interaction` fails if your name happens to have non-ascii characters :(
Uninen··on AudioMass – free, open source, web-based Audio and Waveform editor
Most music-related applications wanting to offer generic hardware support and hackability. Midi is an amazing standard. It allows you to hook up a synthesizer from the early 80s to your 2020 laptop (via a midi-capable audio interface) and control almost anything in your modern DAW (Digital Audio Workstation). And if your Web browser has support for it, control a software synth or any application as well.

In addition to just musical instruments, a huge number of different hardware still use midi. I'm personally interested in DJ-world where things like DJ- and light-controllers use midi and therefore are very easily remappable and very hackable (if the sw is built correctly).

I've wanted to build some DJ-related sw myself that would work via browser but the fact that currently only Chrome supports the standard has so far kept me off it. I'd very much like to see Firefox supporting Web midi.

Uninen··on Telegram vs. Signal vs. Status – The Secure Messaging App of the Future
I love that there's a "web 3.0 browser" built in Status.

Whatever this web 3.0 thing is.

Uninen··on Broadcast – realtime streaming functionality for async Python Web apps
"At the moment broadcaster is in Alpha, and should be considered a working design document."

"It currently supports Redis PUB/SUB, and Postgres LISTEN/NOTIFY, plus a simple in-memory backend, that you can use for local development or during testing."

I think this is something the Python Web scene very much needs to see grown and mature.

Also the Postgres backend is interesting, didn't even know it could do that!

Uninen··on Ask HN: Do you still use RSS?
I love RSS, I used to have an OPML file of hundreds of feeds (mainly blogs/ppl I follow but also various company news feeds and other news content). Don’t know when it happened but for a few years I didn’t have a RSS reader because the sw just got too unmaintained and bad (on macOS / iOS).

But a few months back I finally took the time and set up a reader. Now I again get annoyed by sites that don’t offer feeds of their content. But RSS is still hands down the best eay to be notified and on top of vast amount of new content of various sites all over the Web.

Uninen··on Pivoting from conventional search to search-as-you-type: Our story with Mozilla
