UmbertoNoEco··on Give up GitHub: The time has come
I had my suspicions but reading this comment thread I am now 100% sure that FAANGS and the likes have active PR firms working on HN threads. Naive to not have realized that before I know.
UmbertoNoEco··on Give up GitHub: The time has come
I love how you direct the question to the people putting their code out in their open and not to Microsoft. What is so special about Clippy et al?
UmbertoNoEco··on What do Starlink’s latest Ookla results mean for its RDOF winnings?
I am latin-American Mr "I think Anglo is the world default", in our region the US has been a much more pernicious force in history than China,by several orders of magnitude. I understand we are just simple apes that love to think tribally (the logical part of our brain is shut off) but I would expect one is aware enough to understand there are other "tribes", specially when worldwide one's group does not reach double digits as % of population.
UmbertoNoEco··on What do Starlink’s latest Ookla results mean for its RDOF winnings?
It's not only the pollution. The world is "unwillingly" giving up space spots to a company that can use those satellites as technological weapons. What happens when a Chinese/India/Russia(Insert any non-Anglo "bad" country) decides to emulate them , I would happily bet my left kidney the _commentariat_ here would not be so happy.

Perfect for this site then
UmbertoNoEco··on Project Ideas
Half of these projects are so general that are laughable, a quarter is so ambitious that a small prize would play 0 role in the potential development of the solution.

Less:

Solve world peace.

Create "dynamic" organizations.

Establish a colony in Titan.

More:

- Increase by Z the yield of X staple in Y country within the next 5 years.

- Integrate 1 million people to the Internet for less than 1 USD/month/person.

UmbertoNoEco··on Why I’m Cryptophobic
Abandon this thread ASAP. HN "economists" are in full force with all the wacky theories. If mainstream economists hardly get one thing right, you'll only be totally misled by the clueless crowd here.
UmbertoNoEco··on Show HN: I ranked news websites by speed
This site takes all the content from wikinews. There, that's the comparison.
UmbertoNoEco··on Ask HN: Side projects that are making money, but you'd not talk about them?
Could you imagine? 15 Superbowls at the same time. Cue a "Markets in Action" vignette.
UmbertoNoEco··on Despite best efforts .NET is still not an open platform
He should steal material from less well-known comedians. That's what the pros do.
UmbertoNoEco··on Despite best efforts .NET is still not an open platform
Not only that. More often than not "focusing on shareholders" just means, let's do the most sociopathic thing which will pump up the stock price in the short term, increase those year-end bonuses and allow the executives to move up within or outside. Long term consequences for the shareholders are not considered, you could just imagine what weight long-term consequences for society will have on their decisions.
UmbertoNoEco··on Tauri 1.0 – Electron Alternative Powered by Rust
I like it,but even a trivial app becomes a huge +5GB folder in development. The dependencies folder alone will make a node project blush + all the stuff generated when compiling/building. I love to have several apps to work on them concurrently but I wont reserve 50 Gb of my already small SSD for this stuff.

Again, the median age of China is lower than the US and the UE. How is that a problem for China not for them? Skin color?
UmbertoNoEco··on Overthinking (2021)
By our way you mean leverage fiat currencies and take advantage of being in total control of international multilateral organizations?
UmbertoNoEco··on A chat with Ray Dalio
And what would be that problem? That sounds like wishful thinking. The median age of China is below of that both the US and the EU.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_median_ag...

A significant fraction of the US seems to have problem to adjust to the notion that in the next decades China will become the clear number 1 country in many fields, and the US will be to China, what Germany is to the US.(Similar on a per capita basis, about 1/4 in absolute numbers)

Wishful thinking is a terrible basis to plan.

UmbertoNoEco··on Ask HN: What's the coolest website you know?
I submitted a site as a joke and now I feel bad because there are a lots of interesting sites submitted.

So let me contribute with 2 other sites, maybe not the "coolest" but I think they will be of interest to some fraction of the people here (for those who dont know them)

- http://www.astronautix.com/ A labor of love of just 1 person, almost of 80000 pages! on humanity space programs,you can spend hours and hours reading about obscure soviet prototypes, NASA suits, the Chinese space probes, etc

- https://www.centauri-dreams.org/ A very active (and long) blog about interstellar travel. Despite the fact the subject is now more fiction than science the articles discussed and reviewed are about actual science done by actual scientists (many good guest posts too)

UmbertoNoEco··on Colombia shares unprecedented images of treasure-laden wreck
I mean that's how the UK has still its museums filled to the brim with foreign objects. I dont support Spain on its claims but it is the same logic. This should go to Colombia, period, the treasure is in their waters.

UmbertoNoEco··on MicroPython – Python for Microcontrollers
This is mostly true, but (I cannot believe I am going to do this), Rust is in a different tier compared to the other languages in the list.

From the last who is hiring thread:

Zig =0 mentions

Nim = 0 mentions

Julia = 2 mentions

C# = 4 mentions

C++ = 12 mentions

Rust = 13 mentions

Java = 18 mentions

JavaScript = 30 mentions

Python = 50 mentions

The threads here are not indicative of the overall market and 1 mention != 1 job, but the numbers above are pretty much in line with the proportion of offers I am seeing elsewhere.

UmbertoNoEco··on Embodiment is indispensable for AGI
Moving electrons in silicon circuits = Moving K+ and Na+ ions in cells. Same principle. There is nothing inherently special, sacred or non-physical about our circuits. They are very energy efficient (compared to current standards), highly parallel and it is a kluge hard to reverse-engineer but other than that they are sensors, processors and actuators. This blueprint is universal, trivially so.
UmbertoNoEco··on Embodiment is indispensable for AGI
It's trivial to give a regular CPU better sensing than you in dozens of variables (pressure, temperature, voltage, CO concentration, etc), so your point is rather weak.
UmbertoNoEco··on Embodiment is indispensable for AGI
Probably it is a valid question, but I lost my patience a long long long time ago with the David Chalmers and Thomas Nagels of this world. They love to play a god of the gaps game with consciousness which it is really boring. The same thing some scientists did regarding life in the 19th century , which still some people play btw: the search for the supposed elan-vital. Count me in with Dr I-refute-thus Johnson and the anesthesiologists on the physical-reductionist side.

UmbertoNoEco··on How one guy ruined Hacktoberfest (2020)
I dont know if it is mentioned in the paper, but one important thing is the friction of paying, even if it is 1 cent. It works the other way around too, sometimes people pay to avoid more friction in the future (like in those pay and you will get no ads, priority in the queue, etc, kind of services)
