UmGuys··on Anthropic's CEO says in 3-6 months, AI will write 90% of the code (March 2025)
If there are no devs, who finds the junior bugs?
UmGuys··on Anthropic's CEO says in 3-6 months, AI will write 90% of the code (March 2025)
If the general public believes this nonsense, I understand why there's so much AI hype. He's just selling his product like Musk, right? No one with a surface level of context could believe AI will replace all developers by March 2026 and soon after all human employees.
UmGuys··on White House loyalty rating for companies
I agree. There should be at least one from Patagonia or some decent company who takes a stand just by the law of numbers. It's possible they have a legal obligation to shareholders to not do it. Which is totally fucked and why our country and economy are now not repairable.
UmGuys··on The U.S. grid is so weak, the AI race may be over
The program makes money. Most of the programs DOGE cut are profitable or break even as far as I'm aware. They destroyed things for the sake of ideology.
UmGuys··on The U.S. grid is so weak, the AI race may be over
Energy Star was one of the victims of this administration.

UmGuys··on Streaming services are driving viewers back to piracy
Some never left. I don't feel the need to torrent anymore because free libraries are consistently available for nearly all entertainment. Given the world is falling apart, maybe I should download some things to enjoy when things hit the fan.
UmGuys··on "None of These Books Are Obscene": Judge Strikes Down Much of FL's Book Ban Bill
You're making the same sort of mistake I make in situations like this. You assume they're good people because you're a decent person. You project that onto them. You don't consider they actually are bigots, and lacking curiosity :)
UmGuys··on "None of These Books Are Obscene": Judge Strikes Down Much of FL's Book Ban Bill
Apparently, recently this is new and exclusively Republican policy:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_banning_in_the_United_Sta...

Republicans are seeking to ban thousands of books nationwide.

UmGuys··on "None of These Books Are Obscene": Judge Strikes Down Much of FL's Book Ban Bill
Stop trying to both sides. I see crazed MAGAs banning books here and I would bet if we look at numbers the crazies censor at least an order of magnitude more than whatever you're referencing. I can't think of an example of books being banned by non rightwingers, but will look into it now to learn.
UmGuys··on "None of These Books Are Obscene": Judge Strikes Down Much of FL's Book Ban Bill
The judicial system is a wreck and obviously works for rich people only. This sort of obstruction of every day life by people seeking to destroy democracy should be filtered out of the system otherwise they can get their way or keep filing lawsuits. How? It starts with education which is why they're attacking it.

Especially with the new Tr*mpian ethos of rules for thee, not for me.

UmGuys··on "None of These Books Are Obscene": Judge Strikes Down Much of FL's Book Ban Bill
They are the tyranny. They're literally attacking Americans with the military now. GOP has fully descended into whatever Tr*mp wants and he seems to want to destroy America.
UmGuys··on "None of These Books Are Obscene": Judge Strikes Down Much of FL's Book Ban Bill
It's marketing. Usually free speech absolutists just want to be able to say bigoted things. Often, they're simply racist.

People are very volatile and polarized because of their social media's marketing. GOP marketing is insane. They're marketed as fiscally responsible, good for the economy, conservative, pro free speech, pro liberty, capitalist, and recently anti-war. And somehow people believe that despite reality. I can't grasp how anyone could ever support someone so awful as Trump. The man is a pathetic spoiled rotten bully in clown face who can barely string together a coherent sentence. Not to mention all the (sex) crime.

UmGuys··on Ask HN: What trick of the trade took you too long to learn?
If you keep a journal of what you work on and learn each day it reinforces the concepts so you remember better. And you can use it for reference in the future. This is extra important for juniors starting out when everything is new. Taking good notes will accelerate your growth. It helps develop an understanding of the context you're working in faster.

Here's an example: the first time you learn a design pattern you can create a journal entry about that pattern with some psuedocode. Then next time you want to build something using that pattern, you can look at your journal. Even 10 years down the line and 3 companies later.

Does that help?

UmGuys··on Ask HN: What trick of the trade took you too long to learn?
This is decent. Make tickets for the todos ahead of time and make sure your PM gives them priority.
UmGuys··on Ask HN: What trick of the trade took you too long to learn?
The best programming advice I was ever given was given to me before I started while I was in college. It took me too long to appreciate how strong it made me. KEEP AN ENGINEERING JOURNAL. Keep it somewhere you have access to outside company property and update it daily with what you worked on learned. Bonus: take notes in every meeting. Also: how to make bad co-workers hate you.
UmGuys··on A.I. researchers are negotiating $250M pay packages
I'm not familiar with ELIZA. Technical terms mean things. AI has no technical meaning. It's difficult to distinguish what people mean when they say AI, but as technical people I assume we know AGI doesn't exist yet and we don't know if it ever will.
UmGuys··on A.I. researchers are negotiating $250M pay packages
Nice. That's really great progress. Maybe a model will be able to infer what consciousness is.
UmGuys··on A.I. researchers are negotiating $250M pay packages
I don't think so. It's just a bubble. There's no AI, we have fancy chatbots. If someone were to achieve AGI, maybe they win, but it's unlikely to exist. Or if it does, we can't define it.
UmGuys··on IRS head says free Direct File tax service is 'gone'
CPB, Direct File, BLS head all in one day. Lots to sweep under the rug this Friday afternoon. We're spending more for this service incineration. Literally. Tr*mp has increased spending despite all these cuts.
UmGuys··on U.S. fires statistics chief after soft jobs report
Are you kidding? This is the type of thing Tr*mp has always done. He occupied the office before, remember? I swear no one remembers the disaster that was 2016-2020. I don't know how anyone could forget. Historians ranked him the 3rd worst presidential term ever.
UmGuys··on US AI Action Plan
It's true. Recently I moved to a rural area and many nurses work as doctors. Soon we won't have hospitals here so there's no more need to keep up the cruel charade. It's absolutely disgusting and the primary reason I could never have children. It would be impossible to guarantee their security.

Edit: I haven't yet achieved my savings goal so I can escape to a place where it's safe to have a family.

UmGuys··on US AI Action Plan
There will be several executive orders dictating chatbot truths. The first order will be that Trump won the 2020 election, the others will be a series of other North Korea-esque nonsense MAGA loves. America the excellent!
UmGuys··on ICEBlock, an app for anonymously reporting ICE sightings, goes viral
Oh shit. Graphene says it's a honeypot. Slick marketing.
UmGuys··on ICEBlock, an app for anonymously reporting ICE sightings, goes viral
> "because it would have to collect information on Android that could put people at risk."

What's this about? Surely it's technically possible to implement. Can someone add more detail?

UmGuys··on America’s incarceration rate is in decline
Of course it does. The framing is from the establishment. The surge in crime and rise in prison population is because we criminalized existence EG "the war on drugs". Now we're getting rid of some of the worse things.
UmGuys··on U.S. bombs Iranian nuclear sites
Simply put, bribes. Trump won't talk to you for less than a million if your name isn't Putin. It was an illegal strike. Should we be praising him for attacking random countries without authorization by congress? I think it's a very valid critique. Especially since this particular person literally tried to overthrow the government in 2021 and continues to act consistently as if laws don't apply.
UmGuys··on Few Americans pay for news when they encounter paywalls
I would certainly have negative money if I subscribed to every prompt. How would a person even manage that? The emails. You would have to hire someone to unsubscribe. The model clearly isn't functional. It seems like only the entertainment outlets can afford to be free. So we have MAGA and really wild people.
UmGuys··on Berkshire Hathaway Now Pays 5% of All Corporate Income Taxes in America
Don't forget sales tax. There are many forms of taxation. How fascinating.
