UlyssesSKrunk··on A Design Defect Is Breaking iPhone 6 Pluses
Yeah, as an American this sucks. My aunt had this issue and was similarly told to buy another iphone because the "1 year limited warranty doesn't cover this". Took less than 5 minutes on the phone for her to get her money back through amex. Chargebacks are a godsend to us unprotected American consumers. I doubt the chargeback hurt apple much, but any little extra expense to them makes me happy.
UlyssesSKrunk··on The neurology of self-awareness
Why would you need the fringe sciences to support the current scientific consensus on something? It's like you're asking for crazy physicists to prove that a feather and hammer will fall at the same speed in a vacuum. Everybody knows that.
UlyssesSKrunk··on The History of Push-Button Cuisine
...if he invented something then he wouldn't be a patent troll. Patent trolls buy up patents and then sue everybody who does something at all like what their patent may or may not be related to.
UlyssesSKrunk··on Brains of overweight people look ten years older than those of lean peers
I'd be interested in seeing if the effect is continuous or happens more at certain ages. Like take a group of people who are obese and say in there 40s, half were obese since they were children, and half became obese after 25 or so. See if there is any difference in brain development if the person was obese while they were still developing.

Not sure how you would account for effects of just being obese longer in general tho.

UlyssesSKrunk··on Why swearing is good for you
>general users will deride you and hold you as unprofessional for swearing on it.

The fuck is up with that bullshit anyway?

UlyssesSKrunk··on Amazon launches Prime Air, its own dedicated cargo planes to speed delivery
No, don't be ridiculous, it doesn't just go to shipping, it all goes to just these 3 entities. All other shipping companies are about $25 trillion. It's truly surprising how little of all money spent actually goes towards stuff.

Check your next credit card bill. I'd be willing to bet that over 80% of all you spending in a given month is shipping.

There have been fascinating studies done on the psychology of it. It's become such a large part of our cultures that most people forget they even do it. There was a documentary that followed 17 people through their daily lives in a major US city for 6 whole months. Most people didn't even remember shipping something most days, yet on average each person when into either a Fedex, Ups, or USPS store 37 times per day to ship things. Absolutely amazing.

UlyssesSKrunk··on The beauty of bitwise AND
Damn dude, that site is addicting. Like buzzfeed but for the overlap of math and CS nerds.
UlyssesSKrunk··on Why isn't my child as clever as me? (2013)
Very obviously, yes. Just try reading the article. I couldn't go more than 20 seconds at a time without thinking about how stereotypically psuedo-intellectual the mother sounded. You know the type, who think they're super smart but who behave like they have half a brain.
UlyssesSKrunk··on Microsoft sued over Windows 10 update campaign
Externalized costs would make tons of entire industries completely unviable. We as a society completely ignore them when it comes to business for a reason. It's shitty, and usually at the expense of our long term sustainability, but good luck changing it.
UlyssesSKrunk··on After 100 years World War I battlefields are poisoned and uninhabitable
Nah, they weren't buggy, it was just user error. Nobody stepped on them properly.
UlyssesSKrunk··on After 100 years World War I battlefields are poisoned and uninhabitable
But look on the bright side. There's a chance the ball may come back to you on its own. Very quickly. In many pieces.
UlyssesSKrunk··on Britain’s scientists are freaking out over Brexit
>The student exchange has a longstanding tradition and existed way before the EU shat in its diapers, and during a time where border controls were very strict. And now it thinks it can just cancel that?

Yes, because now the ability to control that program lies with the UE. That's how it works.

>The Swiss people voted for something, it would be unconstitutional and even illegal not to do it now.

Nobody is saying they shouldn't be allowed to do it, it's just that doing it violates an agreement Switzerland made with the EU and there are consequences for that. Consequences that were clear to people who bothered to learn about the issue before voting. This isn't some crazy contrived plot to exert control over the Swiss by the EU, it's just the Swiss having to face the consequences of their actions.

UlyssesSKrunk··on We Should Not Accept Scientific Results That Have Not Been Repeated
See? There you go again. Man, trolls here are way less funny than on reddit.
UlyssesSKrunk··on “Should this even be released?” Deep learning tool that may be used for doxxing
Well not necessarily.

1 and 2 could both be a bet negative for humanity just as easily as they could be a positive.

UlyssesSKrunk··on Physicists Detect Gravitational Waves, Proving Einstein Right
I want some of what you're smoking.
UlyssesSKrunk··on In-N-Out Files Lawsuit Against Food Delivery Startup DoorDash
Weren't trolls like you supposed to not be on this site?
UlyssesSKrunk··on Why Torture Doesn't Work: The Neuroscience of Interrogation
>The idea that you cede the moral high ground when you use torture seems to have been forgotten.

It wasn't forgotten, it's simply not true.

I don't care if it works. I grew up believing that we were "The Good Guys" and under no circumstance is it ever acceptable for the good guys to torture people.

Well of course, growing up you're a child who is incredibly naive and can't understand the complexities of the world enough to know that the idea that "under no circumstance is it ever acceptable for the good guys to torture people" is just kind of dumb.

UlyssesSKrunk··on Stages in Pricing Computer Games (2014)
I take it you haven't been reading much gaming news in the past few months. Steam now has refunds, like, for real. It used to just be a one time thing and they were real hard asses about it, but now they're very willing to give refunds.
UlyssesSKrunk··on Youth e-cig bans lead to increased traditional cigarette smoking [pdf]
For simplicity, the summary of the important aspect is "synthetic control analyses consider how state bans on e-cigarette sales to minors influence teen smoking rates. These bans yield a statistically significant 1.0 percentage point increase in recent smoking in this age group, relative to states without such bans."

This same author released a similarly titled paper 2 weeks ago, but that is behind a paywall so I have linked to this one instead from 6 months ago. This paper contains the same important implications that the recent one does, though because I do not have access to the new paper I am unsure of what exactly is different.

New paper here for the curious:

UlyssesSKrunk··on Using a Neural Network to Train a Ruby Twitter Bot [video]
That was painful.

Forced, unfunny jokes. Um every other um word um is um. Talking so slow that even if she knew what she was talking about it would be boring. Skynet for beginners? Laughable. And now there are memes. Just shoot me.

UlyssesSKrunk··on NASA Study: Mass Gains of Antarctic Ice Sheet Greater Than Losses
None. Much like the new dietary guidelines, it was based on politics, lobbying, and bribery most likely. Nutrition is inherently difficult to study, and hasn't really been taken seriously until recently.
