Uchikoma··on Lessons learned defying Joel Spolsky with Django
+100 for using "leaking abstraction" in a slide deck "defying Joel Spolsky"
Uchikoma··on Lessons learned defying Joel Spolsky with Django
Iconfinder. They are profitable? They have business requirements? Joel wrote about the problems of a rewrite when you need to earn money, implement money making features, heavy competition while at the same time maintaining two plattform where one is a moving target. I don't think Iconfinder fits in any of these constraints.
Uchikoma··on Picking tech for your startup
Not sure how Nodejs helps, I agree that Mongo helps, schemaless is easier to evolve from my experience than MySQL e.g.
Uchikoma··on Uber Stockholm throw a PR-tantrum when refused unfair advantages
Yes, and this is in which way relevant to the point?
Uchikoma··on Picking tech for your startup
Technology is not important for your startup. Choose whatever you know. Then go from there and fix it when you scale because you've found a market.

About time to market: From my experience (and Reinertsen [1]) time to market is not lost during programming but during the decision phase. Optimize your decision speed (reduce meetings, don't postpone decisions, have a clear decider, know what to decide and what not, ...), not your technology stack if you want to beat others to market.

I did have an offer for some years: Anyone beating a Java (the COBOL of the internet world) stack 5x to market, I pay him $1000. No one did take it yet.

One of my slide deck on the topic:

Uchikoma··on Uber Stockholm throw a PR-tantrum when refused unfair advantages
How? They have created an app connecting two market participants that before were not connected.
Uchikoma··on Uber Stockholm throw a PR-tantrum when refused unfair advantages
You also need a certificate to open a restaurant in most places. You would call the restaurant market "regulated"?
Uchikoma··on Uber Stockholm throw a PR-tantrum when refused unfair advantages
A lot of markets are "regulated", e.g. the food market, there is a lot of thing you can't mix into food (even in the US). Though no one would call this market "regulated".
Uchikoma··on Uber Stockholm throw a PR-tantrum when refused unfair advantages
What I find funny - and I like a lot of Rand, though I've understood the books completely different as most Americans - is that many of the Americans that quote and evangelize Rand would be "parasites" in a Galt world, e.g. all the Republican politicians who never produced or created anything in the Galt sense and are paid by the state.
Uchikoma··on Uber Stockholm throw a PR-tantrum when refused unfair advantages
In the EU it's also for cleaners (all liquids I assume) etc. not only food.
Uchikoma··on Uber Stockholm throw a PR-tantrum when refused unfair advantages
Uber was built from the ground up to make money.

Everything else is PR.

Uchikoma··on The next generation of Instapaper
Either way, I've payed the one-person-dev for some years, I won't pay Digg.
Uchikoma··on Skyrim's Modular Level Design - GDC 2013 Transcript
I found it interesting that a lot of towers look the same, like ah - the people of Skyrim learned that this tower design works for then, hadn't thought they'd use architecture patterns. Interesting. Rather than, oh I'm annoyed the developers reused a tower (and it didn't happen to me with caves)
Uchikoma··on Could HN stop participating in the witchhunt?
I agree, though I find the discussion what should be on hacker new more complicated than the ethic discussion.

I wish for you the guy is not innocent and you're co-responsible for destroying his life.
Uchikoma··on Fat startup: Learn the lessons of my failed Lean Startup
What I've learned from my failed startup during 2000/2001 [1]: With enterprise software the MVP is a power point deck with mockup screen shots. You first need to validate the idea, words, concepts before you start developing. This also helps with the deep decision pipelines that enterprises usually have to buy your enterprise software.

Next time I'd start immediately going around with a powerpoint deck of mockup screenshots instead of developing software first (which we did and failed).

Uchikoma··on Fat startup: Learn the lessons of my failed Lean Startup
What I tell a lot of people: Iterate on ideas, do not iterate on quality.
Uchikoma··on Parallella, a $99 Linux Supercomputer
Most others - like my MacBook here [1] - are advertising GHz / core not "summing" the cores.

So the statement "PC users understand" is false.

Uchikoma··on What I Wish I Knew When Learning Haskell
"Haskell Propaganda: OOP programming couples code and data together in unnatural ways. Typeclasses are a better way of structuring logic."

should be

"Inheritance couples code and data together in unnatural ways. Typeclasses are a better way of structuring logic."

Uchikoma··on How easy it is to Socially Engineer Microsoft Skype Support
Not with a hack, but you could create 5 accounts and ask the target to connect for some reason. By scripting this, I guess you get enough people where you "know" 5 accounts.
Uchikoma··on Setting up Sublime Text 2
To me this is unreasonable when there is no progress on a bought version.
Uchikoma··on Setting up Sublime Text 2
How is the buy-the-beta-then-there-is-a-new-version-immediately-you-need-to-pay-for-again reasonable licensing?

Very enlightening thought for mobile.
Uchikoma··on JavaScript MVC frameworks: A Comparison of Marionette and Chaplin
I wish more people would be this open:

"As one of the main authors of Chaplin, I may be biased. But I do see weaknesses and room for improvement."

instead of the bashing that we see in many comparisons.

Uchikoma··on Taping of Farm Cruelty Is Becoming the Crime
My point was not that I do not watch US produced TV shows (though I only watch TV on Sunday) but that it is not highly likely that I watch some of the shows with "fuck" in them, because I mostly watch UK shows which makes it highly unlikely that I watch one of those.
Uchikoma··on How a banner ad for H&R Block appeared on Apple.com without Apple’s OK
From first hand experience. Then lately there was a discussion on /r/seo I currently can't find with a link to Matt Cutts who said redirects are handled the way links transfer juice.

[edit] People extrapolate that 301 are different because Google tells them to use 301 when moving pages.

Uchikoma··on Taping of Farm Cruelty Is Becoming the Crime
In most countries you can say what you like if no one can listen to it (imagine a desert or the largeness of the taiga). If the commercial enterprise is the only way that people can hear you, and those oligopolies censor you with a peep or take down your website for commercial reasons, it doesn't matter your government is strong on freedom of speech.
Uchikoma··on Taping of Farm Cruelty Is Becoming the Crime
Actually no. I prefer shows from the UK.
Uchikoma··on Ex-Prime Minister Baroness Thatcher dies, aged 87
Soon rich people will no longer die. This will make for some interesting social changes.
