TylerLives··on Wolfram Alpha and ChatGPT
Surely this can be done better without ChatGPT? One thing I can think of is doing it on internet forums. Somebody could use lots of accounts to generate content like that on HN. Now that I think about it, this seems unavoidable and I don't see how public forums can defend against it.
TylerLives··on Wolfram Alpha and ChatGPT
Can you give some examples of bad things people could do without OpenAI's restrictions?
TylerLives··on Names should be cute, not descriptive
The difference is that a service might do many things, while functions and variables usually have smaller purpose.
TylerLives··on How Organisms Come to Know the World: Fundamental Limits on AGI
I agree, but I think it's an important point because there are a lot of people who think suffering is completely bad and that goal should be to reach a state without suffering. I don't think such a state would be desirable and anyone who has played a video game with cheats for more than 10 minutes knows why :)
TylerLives··on How Organisms Come to Know the World: Fundamental Limits on AGI
> it can't just exist 'for free' it has to 'fight' to live, otherwise no growth

This is why we suffer too.

TylerLives··on Ask HN: How to restore cognition after years of trauma? I feel slow and dumb
Imo, that's perfectly normal and to be expected. If you're part of a bad system, leaving that system will often be worse at first, but hopefully better in the long run.
TylerLives··on Caloric restriction increases lifespan but affects brain integrity in lemurs
I wonder if some of the benefits come not from caloric restriction itself but reduction of something else that's harmful.

> Regenerative healing also requires freedom from substances that inhibit the digestion of the debris. The great decline in proteolytic autophagy that occurs with aging (Del Roso, et al., 2003) can be reduced by inhibiting the release of fatty acids. This effect is additive to the antiaging effects of calorie restriction, suggesting that it is largely the decrease of dietary fats that makes calorie restriction effective (Donati, et al., 2004, 2008)[0]

TylerLives··on Men Without Work (2016)
>American society doesn’t know how to use low skilled men

What's the solution though? I can think of 3:

1) Bullshit jobs (i.e. fake jobs or real jobs that exist only to support fake jobs. This is the current answer)

2) Universal Basic Income - Doesn't solve the problem of giving people meaningful work, but gives them some freedom to discover/create their own solutions

3) Artificially making life more difficult - For example, banning furniture companies that are too good at their job. Want new furniture? Here are some tools, go and make it. Maybe find some friends to help you with it too. This solution would solve the problem, but it would be extremely unpopular and would likely need to be enforced globally, or people would just go to a place where they can buy furniture cheaply.

First solution will likely continue to be the most popular one. I hope the second solution continues to gain popularity, maybe not directly as UBI, but something similar. Third solution is extremely unlikely, it's more of a thought experiment to realize how solving real problems gives us meaning and creates bonds among people. Kaczynski writes about this when he writes about three groups of human drives.

TylerLives··on Ask HN: Are there any good open source text-to-speech tools?
To have your own AWS TTS, which you can run offline and for free.
TylerLives··on Ask HN: Are there any good open source text-to-speech tools?
Since you would be learning from another AI and not humans, there would be much less variation in the way words are pronounced and you would have a lot more data.
TylerLives··on Ask HN: Are there any good open source text-to-speech tools?
I have no recommendations, but I'm curious if someone has tried to train a TTS on the data made by one of the commercial services. Generating data would be very cheap, labels perfect, and there would be less noise than in the human datasets.
TylerLives··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for the world in 2023?
We'll get a message from aliens, but no one will understand what it means.
TylerLives··on The FBI was the primary link between the intelligence community and Twitter
It's a display of power. "Yeah, we're censoring you, so what? Everyone knew this already, and it's a good thing". I'm not sure what the people who decided to publish this were expecting. Who knows though, maybe in the long run it will have some consequences.
TylerLives··on What happened to the first cryogenically frozen humans?
You're right that we're not "built" for immortality, but I see no reason why we couldn't adapt over time. The other issue is that aging is really really bad and reduces quality of life much more than nostalgia.
TylerLives··on Ask HN: How to “subscribe” to comments in a specific post?
It was positive enough for people to use it for a long time, while having the ability to change it and not doing so. Surely that means something?
TylerLives··on No one wants to have kids anymore
I don't think the issue is the absolute number of humans but the ratio of young to old.
TylerLives··on Cornell, Oxford to lead grants aimed at boosting iron nutrition
Interesting article on the topic - https://raypeat.com/articles/articles/iron-dangers.shtml
TylerLives··on Gundam and anime replace rampant politics in Japanese Twitter Trends
Imo, the problem isn't that cultures influence other cultures, but the speed at which this now happens. I like many parts of American culture but I don't think that it should be the only culture. For a smaller group to develop and preserve its identity, it needs time and some amount of isolation. Not sure how this could happen in the modern world, but wouldn't it be great to be able to go somewhere and see people with different scientific ideas, art, technology, philosophy etc?
TylerLives··on World population to reach 8B on 15 November 2022
How many people does HN think should live on Earth?
TylerLives··on I’m taking some time away from Comma
I don't think Christians would agree that God is Nature. Christians believe that God created nature, but that he is outside of it. This is in contrast with some older religions that do worship nature. It is not a coincidence that Christian God is "the Father" while nature is "Mother Nature".
TylerLives··on Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far
You can get a much better experience by using nitter[0]. Easiest way to do it is by replacing twitter.com with nitter.it (or some other nitter instance) in your link.

TylerLives··on Why “go nuts, show nuts” doesn’t work in 2022
>Why are you not using Gab? Last time I’ve checked it was because Gab… does not delete the content that you the People find objectionable!

I don't think this is the reason. I've never used Gab but Reddit 10-15 years ago was a lot more free than it is today and it was great. I'm sure there were some people who were displeased with moderation, but in general, most users enjoyed the freedom and diverse(in the real sense) communities that existed there. The change on Reddit and similar websites came from the top. There is no way to be sure about how they did it, but I'm certain it wasn't freely chosen by the users.

TylerLives··on US Government building AI tech to unmask anonymous writers
Wait until you hear about the Speech-to-Text AI they've been building.
TylerLives··on 60-80% of Tweeters posting on Russia-Ukraine war are bots, 90% pro Ukraine
You can probably buy pictures of IDs from India or some other place where people don't care much about not being able to use Twitter.
TylerLives··on Ask HN: Anyone working 4 day week here, as an employee?
If our ancestors thought this way, we would be living in much worse conditions now. Even if your goal is to maximize your own happiness, you will find that humans are happiest when they move towards some important goal they set out for themselves. Ever tried playing a video game with cheats? It's fun for about 10 minutes. Then it becomes extremely boring and meaningless. I'm sure there are ways in which hedonists can to some degree overcome this(rotating between different hobbies, doing drugs, immersing themselves in fictional worlds etc.) but this isn't even sacrificing the future for the present, it's just sacrificing both.
TylerLives··on How do you break into a career in machine learning? (2020)
Comma ai seems to be doing fine and I don't think anyone there has a PhD.
TylerLives··on A chess robot in Moscow has broken the finger of its human opponent
If you're talking about your first comment in this chain(about people refusing to take responsibility), I don't see how that's related to multiculturalism. I've never been to Russia, and I don't even watch Russian media often, but from what I can see, they're trying to promote multiculturalism a lot.

It's not that I don't believe that Russia has a "culture of power" and that people at the top all share the same ideology, but this is happening everywhere.

TylerLives··on A chess robot in Moscow has broken the finger of its human opponent
What is the "culture of power", can you give some examples? And what are your pronouns?
TylerLives··on Ask HN: Which book would you pick to re-read for the rest of your life?
You might also enjoy The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas.
TylerLives··on OnlyFans creator stalked and had sex with Meta employees to reinstate Instagram
Same thing happened to me on my last HN comment (you probably can't see it, it's "dead"). As far as I can tell, I didn't break any rules or say anything controversial. Who do I have to sleep with to get this sorted out?

Edit: It's fixed now.
