TurdF3rguson··on Flock Credibility Lost as It Repeatedly Lies to City Councils, Police, & Public
Am I the only one picturing the Oshkosh mayor and Oshkosh city council as a group of toddlers in overalls?
TurdF3rguson··on The creepiest 'sales demo' of all time
The truth is every single website with Google Analytics and no consent screen is in violation so I imagine whoever is in charge of enforcing GDPR has long ago decided to pick his battles.
TurdF3rguson··on The creepiest 'sales demo' of all time
Yes but it means serve them specifically. If the main audience is US and some EU visitors happen by, it's not violation. Or at least it's not enforceable violation.
TurdF3rguson··on US gas prices hit an average of $4 a gallon again
China is already rolling these out, so we know it can happen here if it aligns with incentives.
TurdF3rguson··on US gas prices hit an average of $4 a gallon again
They're not ready, that's the point. An incentive like $200 gas is what's missing.
TurdF3rguson··on US gas prices hit an average of $4 a gallon again
Yeah but just think how fast those electric trucks would roll out. I can live on what's in my pantry for a few months.
TurdF3rguson··on Claude Code uses Bun written in Rust now
The rewrite makes sense, it's all their dog food at that point. It's the acquisition that doesn't make sense. Why didn't Anthropic just rewrite it themselves?
TurdF3rguson··on Claude Code uses Bun written in Rust now
It has to have been purely a marketing move. There's no other way that acquiring a software product for millions and then completely rewriting it makes any sense.
TurdF3rguson··on Claude Code uses Bun written in Rust now
Claude is better at Javascript than those other languages though so maybe it would be worse in a better language.
TurdF3rguson··on Mayor Mamdani Says Landlords Can't Use AI Images to Advertise
It ultimately won't matter because they can show no photo at all and people who are desperate will show up for it.

It doesn't really touch the issue of affordable housing so there's not much to cheer for here.

TurdF3rguson··on NYC may require landlords and realtors to disclose the use of AI in listings
But that label does serve a purpose. Plenty of people don't know that there's even such a thing as that.
TurdF3rguson··on NYC may require landlords and realtors to disclose the use of AI in listings
> - dating

That's called catfishing.

TurdF3rguson··on Mayor Mamdani Says Landlords Can't Use AI Images to Advertise
Yes I'm sure he's talking about disclosure. California has this law state-wide.
TurdF3rguson··on Texas wins court order to suspend domain name for violating age-verification law
They want them to stop letting kids in their state have access to their porn. It's up to Pornhub how to implement that and Pornhub decided to block all of Texas.

This seems like a reasonable ask and a reasonable response to me, so I don't understand who the bad guy is supposed to be here.

TurdF3rguson··on Texas wins court order to suspend domain name for violating age-verification law
I can't tell if it's Texas or Porn sites that are supposed to be the gangster in this metaphor.
TurdF3rguson··on Texas wins court order to suspend domain name for violating age-verification law
Right, because they complied. Which was easy for them to do.
TurdF3rguson··on Texas wins court order to suspend domain name for violating age-verification law
It seems like it's pretty easy to comply. Pornhub and others don't have any problems complying with TX.
TurdF3rguson··on Texas wins court order to suspend domain name for violating age-verification law
I would think it only applies to named employees, right?
TurdF3rguson··on Kimi K3: Open Frontier Intelligence
I'm not sure but I had this same conversation with CC just days ago and it told me to check my settings because it changed. My account is 4 months old and it was disabled so I assume it's been opt-in for at least 4 months.
TurdF3rguson··on Kimi K3: Open Frontier Intelligence
No it's opt-in now. Yes they nag you and might ask you if they can use your transcript to train on but you have to agree to it and it's something you can disable.
TurdF3rguson··on Kimi K3: Open Frontier Intelligence
Again, that's a yes for OpenAI and a no for Anthropic.
TurdF3rguson··on Kimi K3: Open Frontier Intelligence
Yes, my comment only applies to Claude - I have no knowledge of OpenAI policy.
TurdF3rguson··on Kimi K3: Open Frontier Intelligence
But we already know they're not using the transcript for training (unless you opted in t that)
TurdF3rguson··on Kimi K3: Open Frontier Intelligence
That would be just as bad.
TurdF3rguson··on Kimi K3: Open Frontier Intelligence
How is that a dark pattern? What is the light pattern for getting feedback from users?
TurdF3rguson··on Kimi K3: Open Frontier Intelligence
> if you use the coding plans they train in return.

No, you have to opt-in to that. There's a privacy toggle on account settings.

TurdF3rguson··on Kimi K3: Open Frontier Intelligence
The nightmare for Anthropic to be caught doing that combined with the temptation of their staff to virtue-signal by blowing the whistle...

I trust them to act in their own interest if nothing else.

TurdF3rguson··on Data centers have hiked electricity prices on the public by $23B
Sure but the corruption money offsets informed votes against with campaign spend. The economics of expecting to vote them out doesn't work.

Plus it feels like one party is getting flexible when it comes to corruption in their leaders. It's not as disqualifying as it was 15 years ago.

TurdF3rguson··on Book prizes don't work how you think
Agreed on Murderbot, it's a fun read but there's no big new ideas there and that's what Hugo used to be about.
TurdF3rguson··on Inkling: Our Open-Weights Model
The pelican thing is definitely getting deeper into model weights over time just by getting fed threads like this.
