TrueGeek··on Show HN: A Datadog for Datadog
> Status pages get updated manually

This bugs me to no end. I don't want to name names but I had a devops service that was returning an odd error implying I was doing something wrong. Status page said everything was good. After several hours I emailed to be told it was actually down, they were aware, and were working on it. It eventually gets fixed, they email back, and all is well. The status page never did show any downtime.

TrueGeek··on Ask HN: How do you start over with 2FA after losing your phone?
Yeah, this is disturbing. He's admitting he used social engineering to get back into his own locked account and he's happy that it worked. Assuming he did this over email / web the "proof" he sent them was probably a photo of driver's license which really doesn't prove ownership of identity when your account was just hacked.

We really need a third party service that allows you to walk up, have some DNA taken, verify you are who you say you are, and then unlock accounts in these cases. We can have the government do it, they have all our DNA anyway!

TrueGeek··on Ask HN: Science fiction movies that are appropriate for 12 year olds?
Maybe not Clockwork Orange if OP is trying to avoid adult themes...

TrueGeek··on I don’t want a new phone, but I’m probably buying one
> most devs don’t seem to bother

And by devs, let’s be clear it’s product owners. As a dev this isn’t hard to do. The problem is making sure it’s made a priority.

TrueGeek··on Amazon reports its first unprofitable year since 2014
I don't know if it's just my area (Atlanta) but they are very bad at delivering. I've started moving away from Amazon because they keep losing my packages. I'm in an area that used to be same day delivery but now I often get the "We're sorry your package is late. If you don't get it in 3 days let us know and we'll give you a refund." And what's weird is they are the ones delivering it. So why can't they just try again? I ask customer service but they say they aren't allowed. I have wait three days, cancel the order, get a refund, and start all over.

A few times the order has been marked as delivered with a photo of what is clearly not my house and customer service didn't understand the problem. They refused to either re-deliver / refund because they had "proof" it was delivered. Only when I threatened to do a chargeback did they refund and then, once again, I had to start all over.

It's been weird shopping at other places because some of them take 4 to 5 days just to get an order out of the warehouse and then have awful return policies. It's a trade off for sure.

TrueGeek··on Connecticut parents arrested for letting kids walk to Dunkin' Donuts
In Southern California in the late 80s / early 90s I had a few friends that were regularly sent to the corner store for cigarettes. They had to bring a note, but otherwise the store seemed to think this was normal.
TrueGeek··on Tech Nation shutting down as UK government pulls key funding
Did you move from the US? How have you liked it and would you do it again in the current climate?

I'd love to pick your brain if your open to that.

TrueGeek··on Ask HN: When did GitHub replace standard Git commands with the “GitHub CLI?”
I'm not ashamed to admit that I just really like the GitHub Desktop app. It's super easy to use, integrates nicely into GitHub.com and Azure / GitHub Enterprise which is what 100% of my clients use. It has every feature I need except:

- an easy way to reset but I just switch to the command line for that - it's the only cli command I have to know

- decent submodule support (at least, as of the last time I was on a project that used these awful things)

- decent cherry picking (which I've only had to use when on project with awful merges - like when using submodules...)

TrueGeek··on Big Pharma Greed’s Knows No Bounds
I’d buy that argument if their balance sheet didn’t show the vast majority of their budget going to advertising and if companies like CostPlusDrugs weren’t able to do it for pennies.
TrueGeek··on Big Pharma Greed’s Knows No Bounds
Oh yeah, I definitely checked. There are two companies that make it. Both are priced exactly the same though.
TrueGeek··on Big Pharma Greed’s Knows No Bounds
Not yet. I signed up for their alerts though and they’re adding new ones pretty quickly.
TrueGeek··on Big Pharma Greed’s Knows No Bounds
I spend $900 a month on an anti-seizure drug. At least, until I hit my $6,500 deductible.

The company that makes it is publicly traded so I looked up their financials. The drug is a generic and the patent expired decades ago. Very little is spent on “R&D”. Almost all of their money goes to “advertising”.

TrueGeek··on The global health-care collapse
Are you and your kids healthy?

I also have kids and, like most people on HN, have “good” health insurance that comes with a tech job.

But get one family member that needs to see a cardiologist or neurologist every few months and you’re hitting your $6,500 deductible every April.

TrueGeek··on I'm shadow banned by DuckDuckGo and Bing
What should you do when another site copies your content like this then?
TrueGeek··on Why are there so many tech layoffs, and why should we be worried?
Yes, thank you. I had the first half of that sentence all backwards.
TrueGeek··on Why are there so many tech layoffs, and why should we be worried?
I might be really naive and I don’t know a lot about finance. But the fed has said unemployment is too high and their goal it to raise it by 1 percent. Does it just work like that scene in Fifth Element where some important person in the government calls some CEO and says “hey, please do a round of lay offs?”
TrueGeek··on AT&T's predictions of the future (1993)
I graduated high school in 1995 and found these commercials so inspiring. They also got me super into the history of Bell Labs.
TrueGeek··on Endless Horse

TrueGeek··on Safari's date-picker is the cause of 1/3 of our customer support issues
This is what they ended up doing.

However, they also mention that many of their users are on iPads. On iPad there is no numeric only keyboard so it's not the best experience. Not terrible, but it's annoying that iPhone has a numeric keyboard but on iPad it's just a full keyboard, even when you request numeric only. We ran into this same issue and ended up just creating our own keyboard to make input simpler.

TrueGeek··on O Holy Crap
I did this with my washer for years and kept it running until it was 20 years old. One day it broke again and I knew from experience the part that broke would take hours to fix. At the same time Lowes was having a sale where the fancy new units were on sale and included 5 years of 100% paid for labor and parts maintenance.

The new washer / dryer wash more clothes at once using less detergent and far less electricity. They're also quieter. Like, a LOT quieter. And they text us when they finish which I thought was silly at first but in practice it means we get more loads done per day.

It's been 3 years and we've had to use the Lowes warranty once for a leak. Watching the repairman it seemed like a huge hassle to work on these new machines so I don't see these being fun to own once the 5 year maintenance plan expires.

We donated the old washer / dryer to a pet rescue group so hopefully they're still going.

TrueGeek··on Repairing Your Car in Your Own Garage Is Considered Illegal in Sacramento, CA
It depends on the city code. In my county "junk cars" are not allowed at all although that's not super clearly defined, car repairs aren't allowed at all unless in "an enclosed building", and you can't have more then a certain number of cars visible from the street.

That said - last week my neighbor had his car up on a jack, in the street, for 2 days straight. He was repairing something under the rear of the car in cold weather. He's "allowed" to do this because none of us are mean and called in a complaint so the city didn't know about it.

TrueGeek··on Ask HN: How might HN build a social network together?
You're fooling yourself. We're living in a dictatorship.
TrueGeek··on Colossal Cave Launch Date Reveal Trailer
This has been discussed on HN previously, but the trailer and launch date (Jan 19) were just released a few days ago.
TrueGeek··on GitHub 2022 Wrap
After that story (yesterday?) about someone being locked out of GitHub when using “sign in with Github” I was curious about this on. If you select “private” it requests permissions to change your profile and add / remove followers.
TrueGeek··on Four-day week trial with 70 UK firms: trial ends, some firms make it permanent
Ah, thanks, I didn't realize that. Makes more sense now.
TrueGeek··on Four-day week trial with 70 UK firms: trial ends, some firms make it permanent
tldr; Full results will not be published until February, but at the halfway point 86% of companies had said they intended to make it permanent.

They defined "four-day week" as 32 hours without a reduction in pay.

There is legislation pending [0] to allow any worker to ask for a 4 day work week which sounds very week as the company can just say 'no'. Even if this passes I don't think it means anything. However, the trial is promising and it'll be interesting to see where the UK goes with this.
