By raising your legs slowly and lying on your back, you cannot sink into quicksand. I wonder if it is the same for grain.

TowerTall··on WiFi signals can measure heart rate
from the linked article: But gaits, like faces, are not necessarily distinctive. An individual’s cardiac signature is unique, though, and unlike faces or gait, it remains constant and cannot be altered or disguised.
TowerTall··on WiFi signals can measure heart rate
Everyone’s heart is different. Like the iris or fingerprint, our unique cardiac signature can be used as a way to tell us apart. It can already be done from a distance using lasers [1].

TowerTall··on Where are all the trillion dollar biotechs?
My guess is that there will be some kind of huge explosion (possibly the next bubble) in biotech within the next few years when DNA sequencing using nanopore [1] hits a price point that makes DNA sequencing something you just do with thinking about the cost. Today it is too expensive, so you have to think about this huge expense in your lab / research budget. Soon, the cost of DNA comes down so it becomes more of a commodity and a tool that researchers can just use at will. Later, there will be an explosion of usage as the tech becomes a common household item. We will see that nanopore will be integrated in all kinds of sensors, your smart watch, fitness tracker, and kitchens (to check your food quality). Some even say that it will replace the microscope.

TowerTall··on US halts work on almost finished wind farm because national security
I am from Denmark and there is windmills everywhere. They are really dominant when you are driving around in the countryside and it is ok. Has gotten used to seeing then pop up everywhere past many years. The only thing that annoys me are the windmills they have placed in the ocean. The really spoil the view and they could have placed them beyound the horizon. I suspect the reason why they are not beyond the horizon is due to marketing. Denmark is a huge manufactor of windmills and I suspect the government and those manufactors decided to place so they could be seen from the shore in order to put the windmill on display. When they first start to build them not many countries had these large windmills and a marketing show room was needed and ruining the ocean view was deemed a nesseary evil. I am all for renewable energy, but pretty are windmills not
TowerTall··on Waymo granted permit to begin testing in New York City
> I would adore to see obtaining a drivers license ratchet up in difficulty in order to remove dangerous human drivers from the road.

That shift will happen all by itself. At some point, in a distant future, the price of the insurrance for human-driven cars will be so expensive that people because of that will choose a robot-driven car.

It is all about risk (the risk of the insurrance company loosing money) and an error prone and unpreditical human will be a considered high risk in that regard.

It is only two weeks ago the commissioner of labor statistics got fired and going forward one needs to be very sceptical about the integrity of numbers or statistics coming from the official US government resources. How can anyone at this point trust any US statistics?

TL;DR: Microsoft has retired its program that granted incorporated AI startups with a validated business plan up to $150,000 in Azure credits and replaced it with a two-track system.

TowerTall··on Why is 11A Europe's most hated airline seat?
This is in relation to the plane crash in India yesterday where a Boeing 787 crashed and exploded moments after taking off, killing at least 246 people.

A lone survivor was sitting in seat 11A. The only seat that doesn't have a window.

TowerTall··on Microsoft Office migration from Source Depot to Git
I remember when we migrated from Visual Source Safe to TFS at my place of work. I was in charge of the migration and we hit errors and opened a ticket with Microsoft Premier Support. The ticket ended up being assigned to one of creators of Source Safe who replied "What you are seeing is not possible". He did manage to solve it in the end after a lot of head scratching.
TowerTall··on Microsoft Office migration from Source Depot to Git
There is a lot more to it than that. Check out "The largest Git repo on the planet" by Brian Harry who was in charge of the git migration and Azure DevOps (Microsoft's pendant to GitHub)

TowerTall··on What MS-DOS Can Do That Linux Can't
< In MS-DOS, you can type a command like "cd.." to move up a level, and it will work fine. In Linux, it will not; you need to type "cd ..". The different is the space in between.

That little detail is what I find most annoying when switching from Windows to Linux while having a life time of windows muscle memory in your fingers.

TowerTall··on The Danish Ministry of Digitalization Is Switching to Linux and LibreOffice
They are not going to save any money. That wast amount of money goes to Microsoft 365 and everybody still needs a CAL license for that regardless of which client they have installed.
