Sure, but they clearly haven't "scrubbed all references" of their open weights from their site.
TotempaaltJ··on Elon Musk sues Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and OpenAI [pdf]
There's a "Download" button for their open models literally two clicks away from the homepage.

Click "Learn more" under the big "Committing to open models" heading on the homepage. Then, because their deeplinking is bad, click "Open" in the toggle at the top. There's your download link.

TotempaaltJ··on Marilyn vos Savant and the Monty Hall Problem (2015)
Vos Savant mentions this, and she's kept track of who did and didn't understand the conditions:

> And a very small percentage of readers feel convinced that the furor is resulting from people not realizing that the host is opening a losing door on purpose. (But they haven’t read my mail! The great majority of people understand the conditions perfectly.)

TotempaaltJ··on Marilyn vos Savant and the Monty Hall Problem (2015)
I've read through this thread, and for anyone criticising the Monty Hall problem, the article, or Vos Savant herself, I recommend reading the original responses by Vos Savant, available on her website on te Internet Archive: https://web.archive.org/web/20181118225305/http://marilynvos...

They address every single (meta) concern I've read here.

Little bit off-topic, but I love how probability gets you into phrasing like "the goat isn't distributed over those two doors"

TotempaaltJ··on Privacy focused platform Skiff is joining Notion, Skiff to be sunset
My guess is that this is still acquiring the email tech, but Notion has no interest in end-to-end encryption. They don't care for the customer base, since those are all with Skiff (partially) for the E2EE stuff.

I'd bet they'll either unravel the E2EE from Skiff's software to relaunch it under their brad, or use their newly acquired expertise to build a Notion Email service from the ground up.

TotempaaltJ··on RustConf 2023 – Infrastructure for Rust [video]
I thought this was a very interesting and accessible talk by the lead of Rust's Infrastructure team about the complexities that come with building a language at the scale of the Rust language. He gives lots of specific numbers, and also reveals some of the plans to deal with future growth.
TotempaaltJ··on What happened with the Web Monetization API?
I think another interesting development related to this space is GNU Taler[0], which has gotten EU and NLnet grants, and could probably hook into these APIs.

TotempaaltJ··on Cork is displacing plastics and creating a billion-dollar industry
I googled "plastic harm", immediately hit this Wikipedia page (linked to relevant section):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plastic_pollution#Effects

It's fairly well sourced. Some examples of harm from plastics, mostly on the environment:

> Degradation (changes in the ecosystem state) and modifications of marine systems are associated with loss of ecosystem services and values.

> in 2019, production and incineration of plastic will contribute greenhouse gases in the equivalent of 850 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere

> For example, in Bangkok flood risk increases substantially because of plastic waste clogging the already overburdened sewer system.

> Marine wildlife such as seabirds, whales, fish and turtles mistake plastic waste for prey; most then die of starvation as their stomachs become filled with plastic. They also suffer from lacerations, infections, reduced ability to swim, and internal injuries.

> When analyzing the effect of polyethylene microbeads (origin: cosmetic exfoliants) on the aquatic macrophyte L. minor, no effect on photosynthetic pigments & productivity was found, but root growth and root cell viability decreased.

But this one's about humans:

> By affecting the thyroid hormone axis, BPA exposure can lead to hypothyroidism.

TotempaaltJ··on Cork is displacing plastics and creating a billion-dollar industry
To be fair, we don't need it to overtake, or even come close to, the entire plastic industry. It'd already be nice if it, and other sustainable materials, could chip away at different uses of petroplastics.

I guess if it's showing enough promise to be profitable on its own (workout R&D and expansion costs), Google can probably spare a few more billions.

> EU budget cut by half

I realize this is a joke, but the EU being the EU, it of course does publish[0] information on its translation costs. In 2023, translation in fact is budgeted for only 0.2% of the total EU budget. All costs included, that's €349 million for EU translation services.

Specifically I'd say the "refactoring" of regulation. Plenty of regulation around that has correct intent but bad implementation.

We also don't even need to do that to produce plenty of plant protein for the world population. Current farming output is way more than enough to sustain us all several times over: https://ourworldindata.org/land-use-diets

I don't necessarily want to add or take away from your point, but I do want to note that I believe this is false:

> People around you by and large no longer think it's their duty to help.

GoFundMe raises about $650 million for medical costs each year[0]. That's just one little thing, I suppose, but there are many, many NGOs, charities, religious institutions and unaffiliated individuals providing personal care inside their communities and outside. There's plenty of care that /cannot be provided/ by these organisations, and was not provided in the past by private charities either. Neither could provide cancer treatment or cure a patient with major injuries from a car accident. That's a job for institutionalized healthcare.

TotempaaltJ··on Ask HN: How is Rust used in the Linux kernel today?
A rewrite might simply make it more resilient through changes in the base architecture. However, I know nothing about Linux's bluetooth stack and I assume that it's probably taking into account a lot of those glitches already.

This is a heartbreaking story. I love playing D&D, and I can only imagine how important it is to these people in a setting like this.

I hope the United States joins the rest of the western world and bans capital punishment soon--preferably yesterday.
