Torkel··on Road resurfacing during the daytime without stopping traffic [video]
Yes, please! To me it feels like 90% of road works I pass actually has nobody there working at all. Some go on for years it seems.

Another option is what they do in Japan - just get 10X the number of people on it, with all the tools for the entire job and then do it all overnight.

Also, nice to see good old "dude with shovel" in there, a tool that would have looked the same back in the 19th century.

Torkel··on llm.c is now down to 26.2ms/iteration, matching PyTorch
He addressed this well in this post:

Torkel··on Antimatter Propulsion [pdf]
Aluminium was once more costly than gold or platinum, and bars of aluminium were exhibited alongside the French crown jewels at the Exposition Universelle of 1855.

The fact that something is ludicrously expensive today when manufactured in ultra-small quantities says nothing about the cost if humanity goes all in on mass producing it.

Torkel··on Ford EVs gain access to Tesla Superchargers starting today
Hey! I just learned they are actually doing exactly that for V4 - Yay!

https://electrek.co/2023/07/26/tesla-confirms-supercharger-v...

Torkel··on Ford EVs gain access to Tesla Superchargers starting today
In Sweden this is a pain at super charger locations that allow non-Tesla vehicle charging. The almost randomized charge port locations makes lots of non-Tesla vehicles park in the wrong place and take up two spots.

Not really sure what can be done about it except just hoping for more charge infrastructure to be built fast... If Tesla would go back to only offering charging for Tesla vehicles that would be nice when driving Tesla but a step back for the overall electrification so I'm actually ok with some minor annoyance on this.

Torkel··on Chinese researchers planning 1,600-core chips that use an entire wafer
"China" is "planning" to do this...?

A better title might be: "Researchers in China studying 1600-core chip".

Torkel··on Another Roman dodecahedron has been unearthed in England
Pet theory:

With future advances in material analysis science we will be able to sift through the soil surrounding artefacts as this, and understand and digitally reconstruct what soft materials were around it.

This folows a trend where as time progresses we are able to deduce more and more information from archeological finds.

As this progresses, there will be step changes in our understanding of our pre-historical past.

Torkel··on Compare Google, Bing, Marginalia, Kagi, Mwmbl, and ChatGPT
So, why is it?

Such a nerd snipe this one. 400+ comments and still could not get the answer.

Torkel··on Apple introduces spatial video capture on iPhone 15 Pro
Maybe, but not necessarily. Good oldfashioned computer vision can go a long way.

When it comes to photography "AI" is a spice best used in moderation, cf eg https://www.theverge.com/2023/12/2/23985299/iphone-bridal-ph...

Torkel··on Apple introduces spatial video capture on iPhone 15 Pro
Human depth perception only works up to ~7 meters so should be ok.
Torkel··on Apple introduces spatial video capture on iPhone 15 Pro
They have a lidar. So they have very accurate depth. This gives some limited possibility at extrapolating and showing things from different viewing angles. I think this is also how they can give a good stereo experience from cameras that are closer than the average human IPD.
Torkel··on Oral History of Robert P. Colwell – Chief Architect for Intel's IA32 [pdf]
Bob Colwell is awesome! I remember seeing an online talk he made... must be 25 years ago now. He talked about the development of the out of order architecture at Intel, and in general about engineering. He has some really fun anecdotes!

Honestly he is probably a big reason I switched majors from biotech over to computers, robotics and engineering in general... I even remember sending him an email about it and got a response back, wishing me good luck :) Sadly I can't find the email now, it was pre-gmail.

Some really good columns that he wrote for "Computer" magazine: https://people.computing.clemson.edu/~mark/330/colwell/at_ra...

Highly recommend his book "Pentium Chronicles"

Edit: found the talk! It was ee380 at Stanford 2003/2004. Sadly the video links seem to be broken... https://web.stanford.edu/class/ee380/ay0304.html

Torkel··on Mid-old cells are a potential target for anti-aging interventions in the elderly
That is, unfortunately!, not how these things work. But it allows people to do more targeted studies, and (many years of research later) perhaps find a drug that can have some impact.
Torkel··on Mid-old cells are a potential target for anti-aging interventions in the elderly
"Remarkably, the microenvironmental change and the functional decline of mid-old cells could be reversed by a young cell-originated protein, SLIT2. Our data identify functional reversion of mid-old cells as a potential method to prevent or ameliorate aspects of aging-related tissue dysfunction."

I think this sounds promising.

Torkel··on Don't build AI products the way everyone else is doing it
I work in a small team with increadibly good programmers. ChatGPT as of right now is not good enough to replace asking one of them for help when I am stuck. But it is good enough to replace stack overflow.

Look forward.

A year ago I would have so agreed with what you say. But look where we are already. And think about what will come. My god. We're in for a ride here. Saying that chatbots sucked last time we tried that is missing that a revolution is taking place. It's like saying solar will never work because a single solar panel cost a fortune back in the 70:s.

My take on this is that not only are chatbot coming back big. We're getting the droids from Star Wars within a decade or so.

Torkel··on Gigantic heat caverns in Mustikkamaa have now been filled with water (2021)
Sibling comments are on to this too, but I think an important detail here is that the water in lakes, river and ground in the nordics is so clean that the extra cleaning needed to make it "tap water" isn't really as big of a deal as it might be in other parts of the world.
Torkel··on Gigantic heat caverns in Mustikkamaa have now been filled with water (2021)
If it isn't a story from the US, it will be Celsius.
Torkel··on Extreme parkour with legged robots
With special designs you can build up energy over time and then release it all at once, to reach sporadic super jumps. Example:

(But for all but extreme designs I fully agree with you)

Torkel··on Rerun 0.9 – a framework for visualizing streams of multimodal data
Egui is great, and the eframe way of writing small apps is so nice!

I cranked out my own custom video player (for tagging video) the other day using it and the ffmpeg bindings. Very pleasant experience.

Torkel··on Building a DIY Pen Plotter
Yeah… but I think what he misses is that it’s a line drawn by a pen. It has a certain analog appeal to it?

Vinyl is worse in every way to lossless digital. As is an analog film camera. Or a mechanical watch for keeping time. Still though.

Torkel··on Building a DIY Pen Plotter
Post about pen plotter without video. Hmm, I feel cheated.

Random video of old school pen plotter in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Cd3GsZlOBg

My father still fondly talks about how the crispness of a true pen plot was never really matched by modern printers.

Edit: he has them on a second page: https://szymonkaliski.com/projects/diy-pen-plotter Not as fast as the 1983 version though :)

Torkel··on Platform that enables Windows driver development in Rust
Are you saying that it is backed by statistics that good CEOs need to be good managers of people and also implying that engineers are not good managers of people? I would be interested in seeing that statistics.

It feels wrong to me. In fact, I would argue that in tech the opposite is true. Go watch 'Downfall',the documentary on Netflix about Boeing and what happened when they dropped their engineering ethos and let in the "people persons" there.

Torkel··on Anduril Fury: Automomous Stealth Drone
"The SpaceX thing to defence" - SpaceX introduced reusable rockets and e.g. builds their own rocket engines... I feel that I can explain unique things that set SpaceX apart from legacy companies. And that those things are not just "they are a startup and the legacy companies are not".

But for Anduril I fail to see what they actually do that is so revolutionary vs what was already out there. And most of the info out there, including here, is about the founder and not the company. But perhaps it's just that the cool demos are not public.

Torkel··on Anduril Fury: Automomous Stealth Drone
What is the big vision at Anduril? SpaceX has the goal to make life multiplanetary, which sets them apart from the old crop of rocket companies.

This drone looks no different than what comes out of Lockheed?

Torkel··on Microsoft blames outage on small staff, automation failures
The word "small" in the HN headline ("Microsoft blames outage on small staff [...]"). I am not native English, but the image in my head was of the staffers being physically small. A bit curious how a native speaker reads it?
Torkel··on Electroculture Gardening
Here's a study where healing of wounds is three times faster using electric fields applied to the wound site: https://pubs.rsc.org/en/content/articlelanding/2023/LC/D2LC0...

Cell movement seems to be impacted by electricity in humans. Perhaps the same is true for plants, and can be part of the explanation behind this?

(Easier to digest version of the link, but in Swedish: https://www.chalmers.se/aktuellt/nyheter/mc2-sa-kan-elektric...)

Torkel··on Homer and His Iliad
Yeah - I should probably have pointed out more clearly that the author there seems to be a bit of a partisan jerk... I did see it, and I did try to point it out, but obviously not well enough.

The point I was trying to make was that there are such large differences in between the translations, and the thread does contain the same passage from multiple translations.

But, again - poor choice of link to illustrate it with.

Torkel··on Homer and His Iliad
Apparently there's a new translation of the Iliad coming out. A thread on it came up on twitter. The thread author strongly dislikes the new translation - be that as it may, author seems a bit biased tbh. But the thread has images of the same passage from multiple translations. It is interesting to see the differences!

The oral tradition roots of these texts makes translating them for modern readers a challenge. Religous texts are likely similar.

Torkel··on Tokyo by Train (2016) [video]
Really? Interesting! I tried with at least two different EU (Swedish) visa cards back in July and none of the cards I had worked.

Not in Japan anymore otherwise I would have tried again.

This article, linked to from a sibling comment here, seems to indicate it shouldn't work for you :) https://atadistance.net/2023/07/15/foreign-visa-cards-blocke...

edit: ha. you read the same articles better than I did.
