TimedToasts··on Why does mathmain need an encrypted loader?
A status code for (industrial/the-man) equipment? You could target specific environments by activating on obscure error codes that can be remotely triggered.

Aka If someone from the outside can make your equipment emit X internally, they can target X in some way.

TimedToasts··on Amazonian civilization had estimated 3M people in 3% of forest area
The thing was that _any_ outside contact was going to be doom for North America. A lack of resistance and no sanitation equaled a tinder box just waiting for the right plague.
TimedToasts··on Astronauts describe persistent 'observer' sensation after 6 month missions
Like the other commenter said, you've got your various hard/soft combinations (there's definitely hard/soft carpeting, for instance). Synthetics and rubber are all over the place.

Outdoors: a wet field is definitely different than a soft field and a frozen field is different from a hard pack. You've also got your various snow amounts.

"Mushy" is almost universally bad, from wetlands to wood to computer lab removable flooring.

Good things I have found to stand on are large natural rocks, fine-grained beaches, and deeply carpeted bedrooms.

TimedToasts··on Astronauts describe persistent 'observer' sensation after 6 month missions
My wife informed me that I always comment on the hardness of the floor, regardless of where we are. (I will take off my footwear to stand on novel surfaces with my bare feet. Situationally, ofc.)

Anyways, there's dozens of us!

TimedToasts··on Why doesn't HN have a mobile app?
If a mobile app results in higher Reddit-esque behavior then I'm permanently opposed to a mobile app.
TimedToasts··on Ask HN: Do you think AI fulfills Revelations in anyway?
I think it's fulfilling the Bahai global unity prophecy, but in a monkeys paw sort of way.
TimedToasts··on Guilty Displeasures
Is the guilty pleasure here one that you feel the satisfaction/enjoyment/reward is one that your younger self would disdain?

It's okay to evolve your thinking on this. Some of my younger ideas were conclusively proven wrong, payed for by the consequences of my actions and all that. Younger me clearly got a few things wrong, I feel like I need to re-examine my preconceptions often.

TimedToasts··on Guilty Displeasures
Young Me, a voracious reader, was defeated several times by the LOTR books. To this day, I doubt I could force myself to read dozens of pages of Tom Bombadil singing about trees.

Also Neil Stephenson, come to think of it. I believe that I've absorbed enough of Snow Crash and Diamond Age via nerd culture to provide summaries of both but oof, I couldn't finish either of them.

TimedToasts··on Simple screw counter
Can you explain the counting a bit more?

I interpreted it as: For every three pills I put into the channel, I add +1 to my internal count.

"The last number is unique for every 30" means... if you have a mental count of 13, you have 39 pills channeled? I didn't quite follow...

TimedToasts··on I made an interactive fiction x personality quiz dating SIM for valentine's day
Honestly really enjoyed it.

I was pleasantly surprised at the change of media. It was done very well.

I got a good outcome! Thanks!

TimedToasts··on Ask HN: "Too many people in HN work in Google or Apple–that itself is immoral."
Man, just wait until you hear about what people say regarding members of oppositional political parties.
TimedToasts··on Power Plant Underwater
Your power would be all wet, This would never work.
TimedToasts··on Auto-grading decade-old Hacker News discussions with hindsight
Or one could conclude that the bots were posting at a time of day intending you as the reading target. As long as they post things that you are inclined to agree with, you'll feel positive reinforcement about an issue regardless of the actual popularity or even viability.
TimedToasts··on Ask HN: Is there a design term for deliberately making a UI more frustrating?
A word I hear thrown around often is "friction"
TimedToasts··on Over fifty new hallucinations in ICLR 2026 submissions
No, but you should be prepared to have people suspect you are using AI to create your responses.

C'est la vie.

The good news is that it will rectify itself and soon the output will lack even these signals.

TimedToasts··on Ask HN: Should account creation/origin country be displayed on HN profiles?
4chan's system is pretty good. You can display your country or you can pick from a 'meme flag' (Pirate, Gadsen, etc)

Make it optional that you don't need to display it but you cannot misrepresent your country.

The Czechs were even agoggier, one might say.
TimedToasts··on Czechs agog as they are to open envelop containing last words of first president
In a terrible mixup, it was revealed that it was actually the first words of the first Czech president, after the envelope was opened to reveal the word "máma".
TimedToasts··on US High school students' scores fall in reading and math
It's actually the basis of community building. The students take some ownership of the area they work/live in by fixing/building for others.

Wonderful idea.

TimedToasts··on Ask HN: Why did tech news sites report that Linux dropped Intel 486 support?
I hate to break it to you OP, but tech news sites are not reliable. This is prima-facie evidence that you yourself can see. Please understand that you need to lower your trust levels of these sources as a result.

They don't care that they're wrong and no one will hold them to account.

TimedToasts··on GLP-1s are breaking life insurance
We do not want tens of millions of people excreting GLP via waste products into our environment. Hormones and others are already effing things up.
TimedToasts··on There is no safe amount of processed meat to eat, according to new research
What about Salisbury Steak or other cuts that need extensive work to be consumable? One could argue mechanical processes allow lower quality meat to be used as a primary source (for some)?

I don't really buy the idea that mechanical processes = the Processed Food that I was thinking of. But I do think some sins can be hidden in ways a household would never try.

TimedToasts··on Photographs of 19th Century Japan
Along a similar tangent - we are losing a lot of authenticity with the loss of culture. When the younger ones complain that 'nothing is real', this is a portion of what they mean.

A big aspect of authenticity is uniqueness and modern culture and political thought are absolutely counter-aligned to this idea.
