Tim-Boss··on Piracy - You can't have your cake and eat it
As users we should, wherever possible, purchase media from the easier, safer and more reliable LEGITIMATE sources, and carry on pirating wherever the opposite is true ("locked down" content such as DRM, rootkits, cumbersome convoluted registrations and ages-long anti-piracy messages on legal media!)

To put it another way, it seems we need a "carrot" (legally purchasing) approach to the 'good guys' creators/developers and "stick" (illegally downloading) approach to the arseholes who put rootkits on music CD's etc.

...thats my humble opinion anyway

Tim-Boss··on Poll: How much sleep do you get per night?
OCD, or just "fear of missing out"?
Tim-Boss··on 4chan "blacking out" (or, "spoilering") all comments as SOPA protest
I think today can be proudly called: The Day That The Internet Stood Together In Unison.

I really hope that there aren't too many more reasons that action like this will be required again within my lifetime, but extrapolating from the way things have been going over the last couple of years I seriously doubt it.

Tim-Boss··on SOPA not Dead. Hearings to Resume in Feb.
SOPA was never dead. At most is was just revised or slightly watered down, and I don't think anyone really believed that "Big Media Co" was going to back off that easily!
Tim-Boss··on Internet Archive goes Dark to Protest SOPA
4 hours 20 mins to go to the 18th (Here in the land of GMT at least!) a little late in the day for announcements like this isn't it? Not that I'm in any way upset they're taking action, I truly believe it should be 'all hands on deck' when it comes to defending against internet censorship!
Tim-Boss··on The Pirate Bay: PIPA/SOPA Won’t Stop Us
Honestly after all I've seen, I'm convinced that even global thermonuclear war wouldn't stop The Pirate Bay...

If there were only 1000 electrons left in the world, someone would be using them to download the latest Justin Bieber abomination from TPB!

Tim-Boss··on Google to Join SOPA Protest
This has been discussed in another post: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3475587

Personally, I think it's nice that they're taking some sort of action by putting a notice on their front page, but as people have said before, an awful lot (if not quite the majority of people) search straight from their browsers address/search bar, so will bypass this message completely! Why not put a small black bar/notice at the top of all search result pages? Surely that's the place that would be most affected by SOPA/PIPA anyway (censored search results)?

Tim-Boss··on How to get into space cheaply: the PERB (Progressively Evacuated Rigid Balloon)
I'm pretty sure that either the "PERB" would need to be so massive to get enough of a pressure differential to cause lift that the FAA(USA) or CAA(UK) would require you to jump through very expensive hoops, and also that I struggle to think of a material strong enough to hold an almost-vacuum yet light enough to lift off! Also bear in mind that any payload and recovery system is likely to weigh upwards of a KG...

For my money: just buy a weather baloon for £15 on ebay and get a cheap cylinder of helium from your local welding supplier and you can be on the edge of space within a couple of hours!

Tim-Boss··on Website outages and blackouts the right way
Not on my phone!
Tim-Boss··on Website outages and blackouts the right way
What I took away from the article is that done right, 503 error, SEO wont be damaged (long term at least) and everything will be back to normality again within a couple of days.
Tim-Boss··on Website outages and blackouts the right way
Agreed, I've seen a greasemonkey script that can do it, but honestly I can't see a reason why this isn't adopted as standard!

Afaik this is all for the 18th January 2012.....or Wednesday as we mortals call it
Tim-Boss··on Hiring your first employee- a UK guide
Very useful for new founders, although as you quite rightly point out if you pay a half-decent accountancy firm to handle your company finances they should be sorting most of this out for you!
Tim-Boss··on Food Hacking - An awesome summer drink on my blog
Has HN really deteriorated to the point where people are submitting smoothie recipe articles?!?

Oh no, my mistake, just another thinly veiled advert for a personal blog.....

Tim-Boss··on Amazon to accept Bitcoin payments, soon?
I absolutely agree with the comment from EhVedadoOAnonimato: "I think it is more likely that Mr Jit there didn't know what you were talking about, and just gave you a standard "finish the discussion with client happy" answer."

I've spoken with 'remote' customer service reps before, and they do have a propensity for just telling you whatever it appears that you want to hear!

Look a bit further down the page at the conversation HostFat had with another service rep: "I have just a question, do you know if Amazon is going to accept Bitcoin currency? Deepti:I'm sorry we don't have any information about Bitcoin currency."

So it's clearly not a standard script/company line MR. Jit was reading from...

Tim-Boss··on Your iPhone Was Built By 13 Year-Olds Working 16 Hours A Day
Old news... foxcon's sketchy practices has been widely reported on in the media, yet I believe people are willfully blind to "remote" concerns/issues when someone hands them a new 'shiny' (ipod/ipad/whatever) for a few hundred dollars!
Tim-Boss··on Google Science Fair 2012
"How can we turn garbage into energy?" Burn it.

"Why do cats purr?" Evolved basic social actions, display of affection/assuagement.

"Is it better to boil or bake?" Boil water, bake cake (or get bake).

"Can robots change their mind?" Only if they were programmed with algorithms that enabled them to.

"Why do some things bounce?" Newtonian laws of conservation of momentum, angular momentum and energy.

"Why do spinning balls curve?" The spin of the ball forces air around it in the direction of spin, coupled with a forward motion this produces a difference in air pressures on either side of the ball causing it to 'curve' a path through the air.

I can't help but feel the kids time would be better spent aiming their question at wikipedia instead of another thinly disguised Google Co. marketing site! ;)

Tim-Boss··on How Likely Is a Runaway Greenhouse Effect on Earth?
If "climate engineering" fails and the planet gets warm enough to melt the polar ice and heat the sea beds to release the trapped methane, its probably inevitable!

("Methane is one of the most potent and influential greenhouse gases on Earth. The 100-year global warming potential of methane is 25, i.e. over a 100-year period, it traps 25 times more heat per mass unit than carbon dioxide." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmospheric_methane)

Tim-Boss··on Poll: What Type of Documentation do You Like Better?
As has been said: Good written documentation is essential. If only for ease of looking at an index to jump straight to a specific section instead of having to 'guess' what part of a video I need to skip through to watch a specific bit...

...that said, screencasts and the like can be invaluable for actually demonstrating things like using convoluted software or coding for example!

Ideal world: Thorough, clear and well organised written documents are a must, use videos to 'highlight' things that don't come across well in the documentation or demo things!

Tim-Boss··on Poll: Would you boycott a company for supporting SOPA?

Tim-Boss··on ICANN has started accepting applications for new top-level domains
This has been on the cards for a while now, the way I see it only big brands (or the ones that can afford the huge fee) really stand to benefit from it...
Tim-Boss··on Google buys another round of IBM patents as its Oracle trial nears
I would doubt it: I think what they're arguing in court is historical, e.g. BigCorporation sold(past-tense) units of our product that infringed(past-tense) our I.P.

Tim-Boss··on Beta Raspberry Pi PCs Draw Big Bids On eBay
Without support for Flash I'm not sure this could realistically be considered a "browsing computer", especially for less-than-technophiles!
Tim-Boss··on Beta Raspberry Pi PCs Draw Big Bids On eBay
Why so cynical!??? Surly these are just philanthropists supporting the Raspberry Pi foundation and their charitable work? :)
