ThrowawayIP··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
The technology-will-save-us mentality is part of the reason we are here. We live in a society that doesn't do anything unless it makes money for some set of decrepit old men.

We had the means to avoid this (strict vegan diets, ground based mass transit, dense development & re-wilding, energy transition) but people made money doing the opposite. And more people made money sabotaging solar+battery pricing in the US.

So we get to watch the world burn down around us.

ThrowawayIP··on The labor share of income in the US is at its lowest post-war level
Okay, so say AI & MBAs are successful in replacing the labor spend of corporations on every level? What happens to "the economy"?
ThrowawayIP··on I now lack the juice to fuel the bluster to conceal that I am a simpleton
You should read the CJR link. The "shared sense of identity and community" is being descendants of the victims of the slave trade and not the color of their skin.
ThrowawayIP··on Florida inmates charged for prison cells long after incarceration
Even with Tech Salaries, $1550/month is hugely damaging to your finances. I can't imagine trying to pay that on less than $15/hour.
ThrowawayIP··on Watch a 7k-LB Rivian R1T Destroy a Guardrail in Eyebrow-Raising Test
Kind of goes to show that the entire "I bought an SUV so that I feel safe" is a manufactured problem.
ThrowawayIP··on The scam YouTube ads are getting better
I think that a good way to do this would be a triple-poison pill approach. Google et. al. are capable of policing the advertisements on it's platform, there is just not the business will to do it.

The triple poison pill approach: * Every user-report of a scam ad must be reviewed by an independent barred lawyer for a minimum of 15 minutes of actual time.

* If a person (institution, etc) with a public image is shown in the scam ad, they must be notified and should the advertiser and platform should share joint liability.

* If a person falls for a scam, they should have recourse against the platform and the advertiser.

ThrowawayIP··on The scam YouTube ads are getting better
Why would Youtube care to police bad actors? They are taking this money directly to their quarterly revenue.
ThrowawayIP··on Hackers can infect network-connected wrenches to install ransomware
Honestly, that would be the much more dangerous attack to a company that must meet torque specs for safety. You can throw out a torque wrench, recalling already produced products on the other hand...

"We've hacked your torque wrenches since adoption & changed the torque values to deceive your Quality Control on random random bolts on random aircraft. Pay us ransom to tell you which fasteners on which products were changed or recall them all."

Re-torquing every bolt on an aircraft would be ungodly expensive.

ThrowawayIP··on Spotify's push into audiobooks sparks concern among authors
The push into audiobooks feels like the start of the ehshittification of Spotify Premium. With an artificial limit of 15 hours of listening, can we expect to have to start paying for specific albums or releases?
ThrowawayIP··on FCC moves ahead with Title II net neutrality rules in 3-2 party-line vote
My ISP absolutely was replacing ads with "Locally relevant content." I've got that email somewhere buried in my inbox.
ThrowawayIP··on Can You Trust Those Awards You See in Auto Ads? (2010)
You have to remember, you (the car buyer, employee, or shopper) aren't the target for these awards. These award companies market to mid-senior level VPs who have spending power and want to approach senior company leaders with a good story for their end-of-year review & bonus evaluation.

Nothing quite like the HR Director saying "Well under my leadership we were rated as one of the top 100 companies to work for!" But the awards company only has 100 spots available to consider, and you have to pay the awards company to evaluate you...

ThrowawayIP··on F1 Demands Las Vegas Venues Pay for a View of the Race
I hope it does help stop these disruptive events. F1 (and other sports orgs) come in and tout that they drive business for local businesses and city councils just lap it up.
ThrowawayIP··on Albanian gangs have set up their own CCTV networks to spy on cops
One wonders about the future when Gangs could be leveraging big data and machine learning to track police and predict where they will raid. "Predictive policing" indeed.
ThrowawayIP··on U.S. moves to bar noncompete agreements in labor contracts
Non-Competes are absolutely sprung on employees and I am an example of that. The company I worked for was acquired and the 2 year non-competes were high-pressure "Sign it or you're fired" conversations. So I sit at the same desk, doing the same work, for the same compensation and can now not take another job with anyone doing work in my field.
ThrowawayIP··on Solar panels reduced my electric bill in 2022
I am too. My last energy bill was $39 for 174kWh for a house built in 1926. Considering that I pay ~$12 in grid connection fees, the payback period is functionally never.
ThrowawayIP··on American EVs reduced gasoline consumption by just 0.54% in 2021
You are shifting the reduced amount of energy that your car consumes. So even with a coal-based grid, it is a net-positive. The MPGe rating is a great indication of this.
ThrowawayIP··on That snapper might be 80 years old
And the vast vast majority of this farmland that could be used to raise human-edible crops is used to feed domesticated animals. While humans die of starvation.
ThrowawayIP··on CPSC warns consumers to stop using male-to-male extension cords sold on Amazon
Whoever green lit the decision to use a female NEMA plug plus a specific converter box should be banned from product design. It would have probably been fractional cents more expensive to use a male plug on the snow blower.
ThrowawayIP··on Fritzing is an open-source electronic design tool
The Pool concept of horizon is very interesting. Libraries & Library Management are absolutely the worst part of EDA/E-CAD. I wonder where the Return on Invested time happens for this concept.

I'm sure your CEO got their bonus though, if not a premium on the bonus because they lead the company through such hard times.

ThrowawayIP··on Vegan cheese has quietly but steadily infiltrated mainstream supermarket shelves
Almond milk predates coconut milk by several hundred years even. I remember reading an account by a European man stranded in North America of almond milk but I couldn't find the source again.

ThrowawayIP··on Vegan cheese has quietly but steadily infiltrated mainstream supermarket shelves
This is entirely dependent on the type of cheese being made. Famously, Parmigiano-Reggiano is required under the EU DOP scheme to be made with calf rennet.

ThrowawayIP··on Commercial dairy keeping calves with cows
Why is that the unethical "tipping-point"? Why doesn't this farm address the other ethical issues with dairy farming like Sexual Assault, Forced Pregnancy, Mutilation, Infanticide, or Murder?

The answer is that it would not be profitable. This whole venture, stem to stern, is a lesson in ethics-washing.

ThrowawayIP··on Commercial dairy keeping calves with cows
This is ethics-washing. FTA: "Since October 2016 our calves have stayed with their mothers for 5 to 6 months."

What happens month 7?

ThrowawayIP··on Horseshoe crab blood to remain big pharma's standard as group rejects substitute
I'd like to see the citation for that and an example of its application outside of a laboratory setting (if there is one.)
ThrowawayIP··on Horseshoe crab blood to remain big pharma's standard as group rejects substitute
Most of that page is dedicated to how "nicely" that farmer treats his herd. But, there are a few omissions. How do they care for cows that are no longer capable of becoming pregnant? [0] How do they control the size of the herd when each cow is giving birth about 3-4 times over a 4-5 year "lifespan?"

Even at four times the cost, the industry doesn't look any better.

ThrowawayIP··on Horseshoe crab blood to remain big pharma's standard as group rejects substitute
The phrase that jumps to mind is "Nobody committing atrocities thinks _they_ are a monster."
