ThrowItAway2Day··on Ransomware gang threatens to expose police informants if ransom is not paid
North Korea conducts low-level cybercrime to fill the state's coffers and geopolitics. They are like vikings; raiding an enemy and stealing all they can while they're there to keep the lights on. Hackers from Russia or China are higher up on the hierarchy of needs and attack targets for geopolitical advantage.

On a serious note, I would expect that street beefs (especially ones that spill over to rap diss tracks) are responsible for the largest percentage of urban homicides.

And why sketchier businesses, such as casinos, had to turn to organized crime for loans and funding.
ThrowItAway2Day··on Open Security Training: open license training material for computer security
I agree that it's unfortunate that security and bureaucracy go hand-in-hand. As security becomes more a priority, the annoying overhead grows with it. However, I think this is just the nature of security. It's a cumbersome task. Think of any organization that security is very important to, especially where it is life and death. Military, government, criminal gangs, VIPs/executives. All have large bureaucracies to maintain and enforce security. I think the adversaries any of these groups face are so persistent and capable that the only answer is bureaucracy. Training the person can only go so far. Individuals alone are too susceptible to minor slips in operational security. If a small company that isn't targeted by advanced persistent threats has such a bureaucracy, it's overkill.

My personal favorite photographer on social media is Nick Carver out of Orange County, CA. He covers similar themes (Americana, forgotten architecture, desert landscapes) all on medium and large format film. He walks through his techniques and is very enjoyable to listen to!

Check out his YouTube channel, that's one of his favorite film stocks.
ThrowItAway2Day··on Coronavirus Causes Damaging Blood Clots from Brain to Toes
I remember how shocked I was when I first read about the increase in strokes associated with covid-19. Every time I read a new development about what the virus can do, I'm just dumbfounded. Either the virus is mutating, it has multiple drastically strands, or there is so much we still don't know about it. Either way, it makes me very hesitant about going out even if things are opened up.

ThrowItAway2Day··on Netflix Now Streaming AV1 on Android
Yeah the image quality is poor, and it's especially frustrating for ad-based video streaming sites like Hulu or Tubi. The movie struggles to get 720p, buffering a few times, then the ad comes loud and bright at 1080p instantly.

I'd entirely disagree. Anything to do with politics brings out the creepy-crawlies. Look at the comments on any news orgs videos. All conspiracy theory and bots. Go to smaller channels with a non-political or economic niche and the comments section are actually nice.

Yeah, I apologize for WGU, meant GCU though they changed last year.

My apologies on WGU, I meant Grand Canyon University. Though, GCU apparently transitioned to non-profit last year. Wonder how transitioning actually changes things.
ThrowItAway2Day··on At Tech’s Leading Edge, Worry About a Concentration of Power
What company would pay for this kind of research without expecting some sort of profitability from it? I imagine Facebook is trying to figure out how to brain works, but I hope they don't get very far.

There's a reason that the majority of student loan debt in the US is from for profit colleges [1].

They are predatory, ill-regulated, and unstable. ITT Tech, WGU, and those all algorithmicly target audiences that are likely to get approved for Federal student loans: veterans, single-mothers, first-in-family to go to college. They get them approved for these loans and the funds go directly to the school whether they graduate or not. There's a very interesting chapter on this in the book "Weapons of Math Destruction." Don't believe their non-sense ads about being the future of education, the incentives just don't align. Go to local community or state public schools if private is not affordable. Either way, both public and private are not-for-profit.

Watching Accepted all those years ago, would anyone have guessed that within the next decade Jonah Hill would be twice Academy nominated for dramatic work? That's motivational, anything is possible.
ThrowItAway2Day··on America’s elderly seem more screen-obsessed than the young
This really annoys me when I see it. Partially due to privacy concerns. Just casually say, "You're not recording me, right?" and watch them get very defensive
