The_rationalist··on Majority in Japan backs nuclear power for first time since Fukushima
Capitalism is absurdly inneficient for maintaining long term humanity interests, e.g. the U.S became a third world country since they let westinghouse dies in darkness. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/29/business/westinghouse-tos...
The_rationalist··on I wasted $40k on a fantastic startup idea (2020)
This is a tragedy of the commons. With my years of dedicated scholars research I keep contemplating more and more how much the human condition is miserable because absurd non-allocation of financial and cognitive resources where it matters. Humans beings will keep suffering, a direct product of their buggy/broken brains.
The_rationalist··on Fuchsia Workstation
Tesla uses an Ubuntu Linux. QNX is probably obscolete vs Linux RTOS
The_rationalist··on Killed by Microsoft
No description though
The_rationalist··on Let’s Block It
OK this is amazing.
The_rationalist··on Physicists Build Circuit That Generates Clean, Limitless Power from Graphene (2020)
It's been two years, what is their progress? It has probably failed to be exploitable then ?
The_rationalist··on Killed by Microsoft
How did microsoft academic compare to researchgate/google scholar?? Very sad I only hear about it now... I mean it's so absurd that people care enough to build websites like killed by microsoft and killed by google but yet no one built a alive by microsoft and alive by google. Where can I find an exhaustive and succinct/bullshit free timeline of their products launches + short, to the point description?
The_rationalist··on Kotlin for JavaScript
Kotlin jvm cannot but you transform your kotlin jvm easily into kotlin multiplatform code. Kotlin multiplatform is not the same thing as kotlin js and can be used both by jvm and js code. You can also leverage the expect/external/actual keywords
The_rationalist··on Kotlin for JavaScript
It exports typescript typing too. We are successfully using it for sharing businesses code from our backend with our frontend! Even models can be shared.

Right
The_rationalist··on Nvidia Unveils 144-Core Grace CPU Superchip
Thanks for sharing, I'll give them a try (this and crash bandicoot). I already played breath of the wild and it is a technological prodigy however I felt the open world was too open/free and not enough filled with narration.
The_rationalist··on Ask HN: Why aren't there any real alternatives to Electron?
Ionic/capacitor/cordova apps are all using the same shared webview instance, electron problem is a sad idiosyncrasie. In fact Ionic apps are smaller than native/flutter apps.
The_rationalist··on Nvidia Unveils 144-Core Grace CPU Superchip
Please tell me the switch games that you enjoyed the most. I am able to properly emulate the switch on yuzu but I just can't find enjoyable games, contrary to on my PS3 emulator.
The_rationalist··on Nvidia Unveils 144-Core Grace CPU Superchip
There are significantly more sales of PS4 than switch, also nintendo live on its laurels but people will become tired of the stagnation eventually
The_rationalist··on Nvidia Unveils 144-Core Grace CPU Superchip
Yes that was their strategy up to now, but they are increasingly obscolete. Nintendo is stuck in the past, the Switch (2017) has games with lower visuals than the PS3 (2006). (I believe the switch CPU to be on par or superior but the GPU to be noticeably inferior) People are tasting the incredible graphics of the PS5 and in contrast the switch is irrelevant. I agree that games can be fun without needing realistic graphisms however for maximizing fun a PS4 level performance is the bare minimum.
The_rationalist··on Nvidia Unveils 144-Core Grace CPU Superchip
Asking the real question here: will Nintendo use those Grace CPUs for the Switch successor?
The_rationalist··on Vast.ai – marketplace for renting out your GPU, or renting someone else's GPU
thx bruh

Energy consumption of HW accelerated AV1 decoding vs h265?

The_rationalist··on Dav1d, fast AV1 decoder, version 1.0
I have seen a scientific paper a few weeks ago stating h265 was ~7% smaller than av1 on tested dataset. Although maybe it's dataset sensitive or differ because of the metric? (maybe it was PSNR or SSIM?) Anyway any data on AV1 hardware decoding energy consumption vs h265? That is probably the main differentiating metric of interest here
The_rationalist··on Dav1d, fast AV1 decoder, version 1.0
I'm praying they start supporting h266 soon because mankind progress matters more than politics.
The_rationalist··on Dav1d, fast AV1 decoder, version 1.0
Alder lake Xeons have AVX 512 though.
The_rationalist··on Dav1d, fast AV1 decoder, version 1.0
For cpu I don't know but h265 hardware acceleration ASICs are mainstream contrary to AV1. Also h265 can reach higher compression level than AV1 although the difference is relatively small apparently. However technologically AV1 is largely obscolete since h266 stable has been released.
The_rationalist··on Doctors who use Google Translate to talk to patients want a better option
According to wikipedia the reason tramadol has a ceiling point is because it depends on the number of CYP2D6 enzymes. This can theoretically easily be bypassed by co-administrating a CYP2D6 inhibitor however doing so require research and care about dose since a CYP inhibitor can in some contexts upregulate a drug dose potency by 1000X
The_rationalist··on Doctors who use Google Translate to talk to patients want a better option
you can get research chemical opiod derivatives legally OTC such as ODSMT or Kratom however I would be extremely careful regarding addicition potential, not all opiods are created equal, e.g. tianeptine sulfate should never be attempted
The_rationalist··on The FTC’s new enforcement weapon: “Algorithmic destruction”
oh yes chromium is not a "set of steps to follow to produce some output" then?.. If the author wasn't meaning what he said, what is the actual criteria he was meaning?
The_rationalist··on The FTC’s new enforcement weapon: “Algorithmic destruction”
Oh yes so chromium and minecraft are algorithms now. What a useful definition we have here.. Obviously colloquially when people says algorithm, it is an implicature that they mean a hard computing (not soft) serie of steps that achieve a specific goal. In other words, a statistical algorithm does not point to the same category as a deterministic algorithm and an algorithm refer to the later class by default.
The_rationalist··on Vectorization, dependencies and outer loop vectorization
