I'm a Melbourne-based software dev with 9 years of experience. I've worked all over the stack: on backend, frontend, DevOps and scientific computing. I'm looking to work with an organised, productive team to ship great software. I love coding and getting things done. Interested in working remote with US-based teams on the west coast.

Read https://mattsegal.dev/devops-academic-research.html and other posts to learn about how I like to work and think.

The_Amp_Walrus··on How to start a school with your friends
a school is an institution that teaches people

your definition of "actually a school" seems to arbitrarily include a lot of reporting and paperwork and commerce that have nothing to do with the bit where you teach people stuff

I'm just a casual reader I can't vouch for the veracity of the content, but I found it very interesting

The_Amp_Walrus··on Phi 4 available on Ollama
I might be wrong about this but doesn't ollama do some work to ensure the model runs efficiently given your hardware? Like choosing between how much gpu memory to consume so you don't oom. Does llama.cpp do that for you with zero config?

The_Amp_Walrus··on The Practical Guide to Scaling Django

The_Amp_Walrus··on Teeny Tiny GPT-4 CLI Wrapper
I've been using this for the last few weeks and it's been a lot of fun, both for work and just screwing around.

Curious if there are any other tiny jobs or workflows people have been using LLMs for (how do I do this bash command, check my diff, generate a commit message, please explain clipboard text) that I could add in

Anika Legal | Melbourne, Australia | ONSITE (~2 days in office) | https://www.anikalegal.com/

We provide free, online legal assistance to people who can’t access it otherwise (in Victoria). Anika provides this help to the community through an online platform, which is powered by law students seeking practical legal experience through paid university programs. Currently our sole focus is supporting people to access safe, secure and affordable homes, by helping renters:

- Get their landlords to repair their homes

- Get their bonds back after moving home

- Negotiate a payment plan with their landlords and avoid eviction

We plan to expand our service offerings over time.

We're hiring our first full-time software developer to lead the development and implementation of the our tech strategy with a high degree of autonomy, with the aim of developing towards becoming our CTO. This will include responsibility for our public website, case management system, client intake form and reporting. All of this infrastructure is in-house, custom built software which we will be continuing to maintain and extend.

Tech Stack: Django, TypeScript/React, Postgres, AWS

The_Amp_Walrus··on Ask HN: Which MOOCs in Math/CS are worth still worth taking in 2022?
Nand 2 Tetris: https://www.nand2tetris.org/

In which you, more or less, build a computer from scratch. The course takes you through 12 projects, about 1 week each, where you incrementally build:

a CPU

a RAM chip

a full von Neumann computer

an assembly language

a virtual machine

a high-level language

an operating system

... using NAND gates. All of this is done on your computer using tools provided by the course. Once you've done these projects you will understand the building blocks of a computer from the RAM and CPU, to assembly up to the compiler that executes your programming language of choice. It's a powerful course that will unlock a whole new perspective on computer programming for you. I believe that bang-for-buck it's probably the best online course for someone who is a self-taught programmer. It's practical, fun and mostly oriented around building things.

The_Amp_Walrus··on Mygov is a ‘huge disappointment,’ key architect despairs
> it's extremely hard to build software teams and manage their performance in permanent government roles

this problem should be solved by making it not-hard to build the teams etc, not by throwing 10s of millions of dollars at vampiric consultants

it seems it is far less risky to bleed money than it is to make any kind of meaningful change to the way gov depts are run

The_Amp_Walrus··on How I hunt down and fix errors in production
I did a code test for my 2nd job where they had a simple Django project setup with, iirc, a bug and a performance issue and you would sit with a dev and work through it to fix them both. They'd answer framework specific questions (I didn't know Django at the time). Best interview experience I've ever had.

Would you add any categories to this list, or did you think the tools recommended within the categories were lacking?

- Uptime monitoring

- Error reporting

- Log aggregation

- Performance monitoring

good advice. it was like a bit of a YOLO fix, but as you noticed pretty low volume/small scale stuff

nice one liner is that any file modified in the last 20 minutes on any machine in hosts.txt containing the word error?
The_Amp_Walrus··on DevOps in Academic Research
Thanks! AWS was costly compared to the free HPC cluster but it was sub $1000 per month and our bottlenecks were person-hours rather than money. We had a lot of work to do. As some have mentioned there wasn't a strong technical argument for switching to AWS, it was more about productivity with those tools. I'd built up a bit of credibility with the team at that point and was like "I can make this better" and my boss was said "ok cool". As I mentioned in the article the team was very open to try new things.

I can see an alternate timeline where I set up Buildkite in AWS to run Slurm jobs on the HPC cluster, rather than using EC2 spot instances. Using Buildkite + S3 were probably the more important infra changes.

The_Amp_Walrus··on Long Beach has temporarily suspended container stacking limitations
The government is not a business, but people can adapt, learn and re-purpose their skills. I think that the key, mistaken, assumption that you're making in your pushback is that general competence does not exist: people who are good at business are hyper-specialised for that environment and their skills will not carry over to governance. I think some people are really good at very general, cross-domain skills and should be put in positions to use their skills effectively.
The_Amp_Walrus··on Show HN: Voicera – Add life-like AI voice dictation to your blogs and articles
Looks cool! I like the simple implementation.

From a website vistor's perspective: I think an interesting direction would be to offer an asynchronous option (podcast?) for all converted content on a site. I think one reason people want to listen to something rather read is because of the additional freedom that you get when you don't have to pay attention to a screen - eg, you could be walking instead.

That said, I'm not sure what your sell to website owners is. "Engagement" is kind of a vague benefit, why would they want to use this service? What problem is it solving? It's not clear from your landing page why anyone would bother to use this - which (just my opinion) is the #1 problem you need to solve.

I made something similar (https://blogreader.com.au) a while back from the other side - where website readers can choose which blogs they want to listen to. There's also something similar to my site offered by Pocket for free (although I don't like their AI voice very much personally).
