TheSwordsman··on Akamai to Acquire Linode
The January 2016 thing was them finally acknowledging the attack that had happened many months prior, after WPEngine gave Linode the opportunity to announce they were hacked after they were also compromised using the same vector that hit PagerDuty. If Linode had declined, WPEngine was going to do it on their behalf. I couldn't convince the powers that be to make the same demand months prior, even though I was confident, so if WPEngine hadn't pushed the issue I don't know that Linode would have ever disclosed.

But that doesn't matter anymore. This was nearly a generation ago in tech companies, and they are now part of a bigger one.

Hahaha. Some of these are great!

TheSwordsman··on Ask HN: How do you take care of yourself?
I'm adhering to a pretty strict drug regimen to keep my mind limber.
TheSwordsman··on Dracula Theme – A dark theme for many different apps
That definitely does feel a bit better to me. I'll need to check it out in a language I've been writing more recently. Thanks!
TheSwordsman··on Dracula Theme – A dark theme for many different apps
Hadn't seen this one before. The darker Nord themes are definitely more of my style. Thanks for calling it out!
TheSwordsman··on Dracula Theme – A dark theme for many different apps
Cool idea of making it available across so many different applications, but I wish it was aesthetically pleasing. It just doesn't do it for me...
TheSwordsman··on Google DNS at 010.010.010.010
The JSON format they display results in is a bit rough, though. Some keys are capitalized, some not.

It'd be cool if you rendered winds aloft, allowing you to change altitude to see the wind at that height.
TheSwordsman··on Akamai Edge DNS was down
I think this is a factually true statement if your business uses any computers. ;)

TheSwordsman··on Semantic Versioning Will Not Save You
Go only supports semantic versions, and has created quite a bit of friction if you want to use any other sort of versioning scheme (especially if it kinda looks like SemVer, such as vYEAR.WEEK.BUILD).

Pushing it even further, Go puts a gun in your mouth and makes it so that you cannot use any other version scheme but SemVer. So you either pull the trigger and deal with the pain of SemVer, or you do what growing number in the community are doing: taking the gun from their mouth and using v0 forever.

TheSwordsman··on Keeping Netflix Reliable Using Prioritized Load Shedding
This. It's an internal system called ChAP, Chaos Automation Platform. It has the ability to target failure down to specific RPC calls in single instances, using platform components that services consume as the mechanism for doing that injection.
TheSwordsman··on Fear and Loathing in YAML
I think I would genuinely be pretty happy with a well-supported extension of the JSON spec that allows comments. Even if it required an explicit start and end of the comment (/* ... */). I also can't say I want or need anchors/references from YAML, so I think that helps me be quite OK with using JSON.

I appreciate the challenges of writing JSON, but also think it can be easier to spot issues if you have an editor that's doing magic indentation based on the JSON. Give me comments to help the humans, and I'm sold.

TheSwordsman··on Developer won’t get hit by a bus, they’ll get hired by Netflix
You only make it by taking the uncomfortable shots. I also never felt comfortable with the interviews. Worst that happens, you get feedback on things you can work on.
TheSwordsman··on Developer won’t get hit by a bus, they’ll get hired by Netflix
Yes.
TheSwordsman··on Comcast, Mozilla strike privacy deal to encrypt DNS lookups in Firefox
What makes you think they are doing that? To jlgaddis's point, they are likely checking what IP address you are coming from over the public Internet. They can see who operates it, and knows that it's Comcast. Then they change the options in your browser.
TheSwordsman··on Comcast, Mozilla strike privacy deal to encrypt DNS lookups in Firefox
Having just done a Firefox install recently, the UX when prompted to enable DoH on first run did not set the expectation of choosing a provider.

Is there something you can point to that speaks to that expectation?

TheSwordsman··on Lemonade files S1
This is honestly the first I'd ever heard of their company; interesting!

Only thing that would keep me from jumping is lack of auto insurance as well, but I understand NOT being in to that business.

I hope they do well.

TheSwordsman··on Twitter rewrites developer policy to better support research and ‘good’ bots
The issue I see is that it limits the usage to those associated with Academic Institutions. What if you're a data scientist, or an interested person, not working in Academia? Any research you'd want to do and publish isn't good enough, unrelated to the research itself? Seems unfortunate.
TheSwordsman··on Netgear Signed TLS Cert Private Key Disclosure
The issue is you're going to have the ignorant customers calling Netgear to complain their brand new router is not secure if their browser highlights it for situation #1. Same for an untrusted certificate.

The risk with #2 is then an attacker could potentially probe the firmware to figure out that process, and phish from that domain? The other is we need to trust Netgear to run HA infrastructure to support that. (lol)
