TheRoque··on How to maintain good vision amidst the myopia epidemic
This is also what I came up with, with my own experience. Basically, everytime I get prescription glasses for myopia, my myopia gets worse a few months later. What baffles me is that none of the professional I've seen (I think 2 ophtalmologists, 1 orthoptist, 1 optician) told me about that Now I feel truly bitter about the eyes professionals, even though I'm sure they are good at catching defunct eyes, I feel like they don't know how what to advise you, when it gets worse and worse.
TheRoque··on John Carmack on mutable variables
I also default to const in javascript. Somehow a "let" variable feels so dirty, but I don't really know why. I guess at this point my experience forged an instinct but I can't even put a theory on it. But it's sometimes necessary and I use it of course.
TheRoque··on How to Obsessively Tune WezTerm
I wish I could use Wezterm because it's the only true cross platform terminal with nice features, but on Windows it's buggy, when moving the terminal from one screen to another, when they have different scaling. It's the only bug preventing me from using it.
TheRoque··on Keep Android Open
Well it's true that there's a web option, but it's not the same. It's way more annoying to use IMO (it feels like all your files have to be "in the cloud" ?), and it struggles with big files. On top of that it's less responsive than the desktop version.
TheRoque··on Keep Android Open
> Back in '99 Linux didn't run Excel/Word/Powerpoint

It still doesn't btw.

TheRoque··on Counter-Strike's player economy is in a freefall
FYI, this is already the case in some countries. In Belgium or Netherland, it's straight up banned, and in France we get an adapted case opening that looks less random (X-Ray: you see what's in the box before opening it, but you have to open it to X-Ray the next one)
TheRoque··on Wikipedia says traffic is falling due to AI search summaries and social video
They try to work hard and get rid of bias through various methods: peer reviews, precise methodology (randomization, blind tests etc.). And of course, even those sciences are not perfect, subject to biases, and evolve. This applies only to a subset of fields, in a lot of fields you either don't have the time to remove biases this way or it's impossible because it's inherently subjective. Besides, if you needed unbiased perfect opinions before taking any decision, the world would be stuck and slow.
TheRoque··on Wikipedia says traffic is falling due to AI search summaries and social video
It's true though, it's literally how your brain works. It's full of biases.
TheRoque··on Postman which I thought worked locally on my computer, is down
Stopped using postman from about 2018 I think. I think it was because I found it stupid to have to log-in to do API queries.

I didn't even find it that ergonomic to use, to be fair.

TheRoque··on Claude Code vs. Codex: I built a sentiment dashboard from Reddit comments
And what would that be ? Please make me save a plane ticket
TheRoque··on Fire destroys S. Korean government's cloud storage system, no backups available
Exactly, everyone here on hackernews is talking about Azure/AWS/GCP as if it was the only correct way to store data. Americans are too self centered, it's quite crazy.
TheRoque··on The quality of AI-assisted software depends on unit of work management
Then, it's the job of someone else to use these tools, not developers
TheRoque··on The quality of AI-assisted software depends on unit of work management
It's true that I haven't been a hardcore agent-army vibe coder, I just try the popular ones once in a while in a naive way (isn't it the point of these tools, to have little friction ?), claude code for example. And it's cool ! But imperfect, and as this article attests, there's a lot of mental overhead to even have a shot at getting a decent output. And even if it's decent, it still needs to be reviewed and could include logical flaws.

I'd rather use it the other way, I'm the one in charge, and the AI reviews any logical flaw or things that I would have missed. I don't even have to think about context window since it'll only look at my new code logic.

So yeah, 3 years after the first ChatGPT and Copilot, I don't feel huge changes regarding "automated" AI programming, and I don't have any AI tool in my IDE, I pefer to have a chat using their website, to brainstorm, or occasionally find a solution to something I'm stuck on.

TheRoque··on Pnpm has a new setting to stave off supply chain attacks
If the others don't include it, it could be another inconsistance though
TheRoque··on A new experimental Google app for Windows
I'm pretty sure you can configure said desktop searches to exclude web results. At least on KDE it's pretty easy to do, one box to untick.
TheRoque··on A new experimental Google app for Windows
On KDE plasma, there's KRunner (Alt + Space default), also pretty neat.

Could you elaborate ?

TheRoque··on "Your" vs. "My" in user interfaces
Anyways, this message is just feel-good bullshit UI/UX design. I prefer to have just "Loading: 90%" and that's it.
TheRoque··on Show HN: 47jobs – A Fiverr/Upwork for AI Agents
First of all, I won't visit your site, i get the warning: "MOZILLA_PKIX_ERROR_INSUFFICIENT_CERTIFICATE_TRANSPARENCY"

Second, I don't really understand the point, if agents are doing the job, and no humans are in the loop, then why would anyone use this website, instead of just... using the most popular LLM in the market ?

TheRoque··on Neovim Pack
I find it weird to not have one, given the ubiquity of plugins in (neo)vim. These editor are self-proclaimed "super easy to extend/program", until now it was awkward to need a third party plugin manager to "extend" them (the vast majority of people use plugins and don't extend all the functionalities with their own code). Plus 0.12 is said to be "The year of Nvim OOTB": https://neovim.io/roadmap/
TheRoque··on Neovim Pack
Discovered this guy recently while looking for a new vim.pack config. He's quite funny.

TheRoque··on Untangling the myths and mysteries of Dvorak and QWERTY (2023)
My first layout was AZERTY (french one), and I added Colemak 4 years ago. I am slightly faster in AZERTY compared to Colemak still (100wpm/90wpm), I never lost the AZERTY, the key is to just use both all the time. I have a shortcut and I alternate constantly, because I need to write french, or because I wanna code.
TheRoque··on Survey: a third of senior developers say over half their code is AI-generated
Thanks for the detailed answer. Indeed I also worked on embedded a long time ago, and the debugger was often the last resort because the debug pins weren't always accessible.
TheRoque··on Survey: a third of senior developers say over half their code is AI-generated
Really ? I find myself thinking the opposite. My program always runs in debug mode, and when there's some issue I put a breakpoint, trigger it, and boom I can check what is wrong. I don't need to stop the program, insert a new line to print what i _guess_ is wrong, restart the program from scratch etc.

Properly debugging my stack is probably one of the first things I setup because I find it way less tedious. Like, for example, if you have an issue in a huge Object or Array, will you actually print all the content, paste it somewhere else and search through the logs ? And by the way, most debuggers also have ability to setup a log points anyways, without having to restart your program. Genuinely curious to know how writing extra lines and having to restart makes things easier.

Of course I'm not saying that I never débug with logs, sometimes it's require or even more efficient, but it's often my second choice.

TheRoque··on Survey: a third of senior developers say over half their code is AI-generated
Both are valid, if your code is slightly complex it's invaluable to run it at least once with a debugger to verify that your logic is all good. And using logs for this is highly inefficient. E.g. if you have huge data structures that are a pain to print, or if after starting the program you notice that you forgot to add some print somewhere needed.

And obviously when you can't hook the debugger, logs are mandatory. Doesn't have to be one or the other.

TheRoque··on If you have a Claude account, they're going to train on your data moving forward
That's factually wrong, downloading without sharing is also illegal.
TheRoque··on AI’s coding evolution hinges on collaboration and trust
"crud web apps" sounds like WordPress or Django anyways I mean, it's already kind of valueless ? The true value lies in what this crud app is about, marketing, and the extra bits you can add to make it special.
