TheRealWatson··on Excalidraw whiteboard – easily sketch diagrams with a hand-drawn feel
Some of these tools do exactly that. I draw my gross arcs, lines, ovals, rectangles and it renders much nicer ones, that feels like someone with way better motor skills had drawn it. I know Freehand does that.
TheRealWatson··on Woodworking for Engineers
How do you feel about your most popular videos on YT being mice-related? :) Did that catch you by surprise? Bother you at all? I guess not, since you seem to enjoy making those fun videos.
TheRealWatson··on Woodworking for Engineers
Agreed. Love the people at my local Woodcraft and Rockler.
TheRealWatson··on Woodworking for Engineers
The irony is that some of his most popular videos are about mice games and mice traps.
TheRealWatson··on Slack Busted?
It's failing with "Server Error" for me.
TheRealWatson··on The chronic suffering of the VB.NET community
VBA is a dialect that sits roughly between VBScript and VB6, both defunct technologies.
TheRealWatson··on The future of design tools
The big players in this space aren't just trying to provide a tool that designers use to create artboards. The big thing is having a compelling story to bring in the other stakeholders, like Product Management and Engineering to participate in the digital product design and handoff. Yes, developers inspecting elements and their attributes is cool, but that's also barely scratching the surface.

Think about integrating a Design System, a developer framework (React, Vue,) creating simulations/prototyping directly with the artboards (like click this button and see it navigate to this other screen).

On top of all that there's cloud access and management for all these designs, and collaborative editing.

All I'm saying is that the big players aren't just trying to build a piece of boxed software. They're going for platforms and a connected suite of services. It's hard to have all that as open source.

TheRealWatson··on What Happened with Lego
In Brazil, growing up in the 70's and 80's would mean your dream sets were branded Hering-Rasti. I never knew Legos existed until much later. Looking back I can see how hard they were trying to emulate Lego's designs but without the same level of quality.

They were super expensive and I knew it.

TheRealWatson··on Boeing to Suspend 737 Max Production in January
They're not abandoning the model. At least not yet. They've been still assembling new planes even after March's grounding. The FAA told them to stop pretending the plane would be recertified soon. They are halting production until the mess gets sorted out and the planes can hopefully fly again.
TheRealWatson··on Shopping Sucks Now
I had the same impression.

> I've missed out on many moments with my toddler because of that

You just missed taking pictures. You were still there to live them :)

TheRealWatson··on New, slippery toilet coating provides cleaner flushing, saves water
"7 links of miso"... I remember that every time I buy sausage links. Gross haha.
TheRealWatson··on Farewell, Cortana
This is clearly the worst crowd possible, except maybe people with speech disabilities, to ask this question. Just look at how many people don't like it.

I really can't make myself talk to a machine. I even abhor the phone answering services that insist that I speak instead of punching numbers. I my household the only person that interacts with the Echo/Alexa is our 3 year-old daughter. She finds it funny.

On the other hand, the voice assistant devices are selling like crazy, so people are interested in them.

TheRealWatson··on The voice from our Nest camera threatened to steal our baby
Let's not blame the victim. The general consumer does not buy a device assuming it's ripe for hacking and that they have to take extra steps to configure it more securely.

It's the manufacturer's fault to allow the weak configuration in the first place.

TheRealWatson··on Goodbye with Love
You can find something on gofundme but I'm not going to share the link until we're sure it's legit.
TheRealWatson··on Why Enterprise Software Sucks
I agree with all you said but you seem to be referring to internal apps only. The blog talks about enterprise software of a broader scope, things that are built by a 3rd party and the purchase is decided by people that won't be the main users.
TheRealWatson··on Blazor – Build client web apps with C#
Blazor is definitely not a shiny new technology. It's been around for years but still hasn't seen it's official release.

Last significant bit of news from it was the "official preview" phase, back in April.

If I understand it well, it WILL be released soon given that .NET Core 3 has just been released too.

TheRealWatson··on This To That
I love that site. Use it all the time.

We shouldn't impose on every website the requirement to support the whole world. This website is probably just run by a guy/gal on their free time, for fun.

I'd love that more people in other countries also created more websites like this, localized and specific to their market, without feeling the pressure to escalate to the entire planet.

TheRealWatson··on Traffic apps turned L.A.’s neighborhoods into ”shortcuts”
Google Maps does real-time route correction based on traffic delays. I'm not sure about any rules applied for avoiding specific local streets but it definitely warns you about traffic ahead and suggests an alternative route. It also uses historic data to estimate travel times if you tell it when (day, time) you want to leave or when you want to arrive somewhere.

We like to think of all the NIMBY's and school streets but these types of "shortcuts" suggested by mapping apps is also what sometimes leads people into dangerous neighborhoods and tragic consequences.

TheRealWatson··on Ask HN: How did you automate your day job?
That's what I do too but I liked the idea of highlighting and hitting a shortcut, from anywhere. I also configured Sourcetree to match Jira IDs and hyperlink them.
TheRealWatson··on Ask HN: How did you automate your day job?
There are several businesses that grew out of people that worked in law firms or corporate legal departments and spotted the numerous deficiencies and opportunity for automation. I know this is true for most businesses but having worked in that area for a few years made me think they're specially lacking process automation considering how bug the Legal industry is in the US.
TheRealWatson··on Ask HN: The most useful Mac keyboard shortcuts?
I've been using Copy'em Paste but Alfred looks like a beast.
TheRealWatson··on A Fedex package stuck in the system for over two months
Once I bought something from SparkFun and when I entered the mailing address my zip code went missing the last digit (my fault.) Instead of being routed to Illinois it was sent to Connecticut. Even though the wrong zip code looked like a CT one, it didn't actually match any valid zip code.

For a few weeks I watched this package go from the warehouse (somewhere in the South, I think) and get stuck in an endless loop in the East Coast.

Anyhow, I told Sparkfun and they sent me a replacement order hoping they'd eventually get that package back and put it back in stock. I don't know if that actually happened.

TheRealWatson··on Slack was down
I only use Electron apps if I like them too much or if they're unavoidable. The only two I have running all the time are Slack and InVision.
TheRealWatson··on YouTube isn’t for kids, but kids videos are among its most popular
My kid learned to skip ads as soon as she was able to hold a cellphone in her hands to watch a video. Like 12-18 months old. I was surprised to see her noticed what were ads and recognized the Skip Ad button.

To me the worst are the stupid "Live" videos, which aren't really live and just parks the children for hours on a stupid loop with a worrisome Chat window that pops open.

For a while I only let her watch YT Kids, which I configured to only allow the shows that I personally approve. The Amazon Fire tablet for kids is OK too.

TheRealWatson··on Fork: A fast and friendly Git client for Mac and Windows
I find GUIs easier for several tasks. These come to mind:

- Staging/unstaging/dropping hunks or specific lines within a modified file

- Interactive rebase is simpler and clearer

TheRealWatson··on GitHub Sponsors

TheRealWatson··on GitHub Sponsors
1 - I can imagine sending money to every country isn't a simple deal. Which countries of residence will initially be allowed to receive (and send) payments?

2 - How a potential sponsor knows, without a lot of research, who is deserving of their sponsorship? Will this possibly cause people to change the way they contribute to OSS to make them more visible/noisy and create unhealthy competition?

TheRealWatson··on Liverpool Football Club’s reliance on analytics
Obviously subjective but my fear is that it would become more mechanical and dominated by physical capacity and highly specialized players. Some people may see that as a good thing. Personally I like seeing how versatile players and smart coach deal with the constraints. On the other hand, I think this freedom works well for basketball and even futsal.
TheRealWatson··on Niki Lauda has died
Spoiler alert! J/K. A movie about F1 is the perfect chance to say that ;)
