TheMayorOfDunce··on The Mafia may be keeping fentanyl out of Italy
it is absolutely critical to watch Gomorrah in Italian. The English dubs are comically poor quality (think of how MS Word used to emotionlessly read text aloud).
TheMayorOfDunce··on Aligned to whom?
admittedly I am not a mathematician, so the Navier-Stokes solution is just an example I am using. But how is it not something "new" if it did not exist before? At what point could something ever possibly be new, if "new" means "this uses absolutely zero existing elements"? Nothing in math would ever be "new". Nothing in physics or chemistry would ever be "new", by this standard.

It seems to me that the only reason to declare this solution "not new" is specifically to dismiss AI. If a human had deduced the Navier-Stokes solution, who would bother to scoff "that's not new! the numbers already existed!"?

TheMayorOfDunce··on Aligned to whom?
this is immediately disprovable and embarrassingly naive in the year of AI generating cancer vaccines and solving Navier-Stokes. You can argue "the vaccine is just interpolating chemicals together" and "the solution uncovered is just interpolating mathematical operations together", but by that standard there is literally nothing new under the sun.
TheMayorOfDunce··on Houthis Used Claude Code to Develop Missile Guidance Software: Anthropic
there is already a "darknet AI" site on Tor. I don't recall its name, but I found it on a list published by Sam Bent, a Youtuber who talks frequently about his experience as a former darknet vendor of moonshine (seriously).
TheMayorOfDunce··on US Military's cyber command unit grapples with cluster of deaths by suicide
Surely you've reached the conclusion by now that "resulting scandal" no longer steers policy, or even any noteworthy degree of public outrage.
TheMayorOfDunce··on Has the New Cocaine Arrived?
In 2014, the U.S. military distributed almost $85 million of Viagra to their ranks. More than 100,000 prescriptions to active-duty soldiers. I get what you are implying but there is usually a rational reason when armies are distributing ED medication.
TheMayorOfDunce··on The realities of being a pop star
I would bet you have encountered a much larger catalog of Charli tracks than you might think. I too was in the same position last year. Then I looked her up and she has actually produced like 30% of the songs played in Urban hat shops, in public places that allow swimming, and in office buildings in the hvac-safe entrance zone between the first and second set of automatic doors.
TheMayorOfDunce··on Agent design is still hard
Yeah, I avoid telling people about HN. It’s too rare and pleasant of an anomaly to risk getting morphed into X/Bluesky/Reddit.

AI gives you either free expertise or free time. If you can make software above the level of Gemini or Claude output, then have it write your local tools, or have it write synthetic data for tests, or have it optimize your zshrc or bash profile. Maybe have it implement changes your skip level wants to see made, which you know they are amateurish, unsound garbage with revolting UI. Rather than waste your day writing ill-advised but high quality code just to show them how it’s a bad idea, you can have AI write code for you, to illustrate your point without spending any real work hours on it.

Just in my office, I have seen “small tools” like Charles Proxy almost entirely disappear. Everyone writes/shares their AI-generated solutions now rather than asking cyber to approve a 3rd party envfile values autoloader to be whitelisted across the entire organization.

TheMayorOfDunce··on What Is the "MFFAM" Policy?
Honestly that’s just embarrassing. I’m embarrassed for them in the way I’d be embarrassed for someone still injecting “Nope, Chuck Testa!” or “an arrow to the knee!” in human conversations in 2025. Oh wow, an internet crusader who especially hates “Nazis”. How unique and cool. I wonder if the writer also courageously boasts about “punching Nazis”, both in combat and even “in the street”.

If only I could be so brave (rather I am a mewling coward who dares not insult the mighty Nazi global hoarde, and certainly not publicly! They might throw me in one of their odious concentration camps!)
