TheIronMark··on Phishing Darknet Users for Bitcoins
Doing it on Tor is probably fine. Writing a blog about it with your name, however, is unwise.
TheIronMark··on Ask HN: Could Usenet get revived, to replace the soon to be unusable Reddit?
The pricing model is hot garbage, but most Reddit users will continue to use it (myself included). That said, I'd be happy to move to an alternative, even usenet. Reddit has so much weird baggage associated with it (powermods, admin shenanigans, a surprisingly high number of racists/sexists) that I'd love to find a place for more nuanced and interesting discussions.
TheIronMark··on Simple exercise to eliminate gastroesophageal reflux (2022)
Same. I've had GERD for a looong time and I'm tired of taking a pill for it.
TheIronMark··on Ask HN: Am I the only one baffled by the long term usage of Twitter?
I like infosec twitter and funny twitter. The rest is meh.
TheIronMark··on Star Citizen will limit its roadmap, as players are getting upset over delays
The real mmo is the Star Citizen forums
TheIronMark··on Retrospective and technical details on the recent Firefox outage
Google should not be rolling out unannounced changes, but Mozilla increased their risk by not pinning the HTTP version.
TheIronMark··on Adblocking people and non-adblocking people experience a different web
> Who is saying they expect free content?

Anyone using an adblocker is expecting free content.

TheIronMark··on Adblocking people and non-adblocking people experience a different web
> How about making content that people actually feel like they obtain value in their lives from.

Not believing the content has value does not actually give you the right to get it for free.

TheIronMark··on Adblocking people and non-adblocking people experience a different web
> Why don't I get paid for my HN posts?

That's between you and HN and has nothing to do with my consumption of your comment.

> Ads were tried, and it's been an absolute fucking disaster.

No one likes ads, but expecting free content is silly.

TheIronMark··on Adblocking people and non-adblocking people experience a different web
No one likes ads, but the belief that you're owed content for free is absurd.
TheIronMark··on I discovered thousands of open databases on AWS
Shodan keeps a running record of what it finds on the Internet, so it's not scanning from within AWS. There are a few other services that do the same thing. I kinda like the idea of using masscan and doing the leg work yourself to get a feel for it, though.
TheIronMark··on Waymo sues state DMV to keep robotaxi safety details secret
The fact that they want to keep it secret means we really, really need to know about it.
TheIronMark··on Despite decades of hacking attacks, companies leave sensitive data unprotected
For a lot of companies, it's not a real risk until it actually happens. In other words, despite thousands of years of scams, people still get scammed.
TheIronMark··on Saving on egress switching from AWS to Hetzner
That's only true if you don't factor people hours into your costs.
TheIronMark··on Moving Google Contacts and Calendar to NextCloud
> Raspberry Pi 4

Before everyone moved to cloud services, self-hosting was a goto choice for nerds who wanted their own stuff, including me. One challenge that self-hosting has not really conquered is availability. If your rpi dies, so does your self-hosting. You might want to explore (and blog about) setting-up a failover device. I'd definitely read about that.

TheIronMark··on Saving on egress switching from AWS to Hetzner
> DIYing it does come with additional maintenance burden, but so far we’ve found this manageable.

Tune in next month for their article on how much fun manually scaling everything is.

TheIronMark··on You Don't Need the Cloud
> Lambda? Beanstalk? Glacier? EBS? What even is all this stuff.

Yeah, well, if you don't understand something, you're not gonna recommend it. I'm glad they've found a solution, but to make a blanket statement that no one needs cloud is just dumb.

also

> Identity management. You don’t need it.

Oh. Oh, no.

TheIronMark··on I got pwned by my cloud costs
> but at least it wouldn't automatically ruin your bank account whenever you got a little traffic.

This only happens when consumers fail to set budget alerts. Troy could have saved himself $10k with 15min worth of work.

TheIronMark··on Ad Fraud Scheme Drained Users’ Batteries By Running Hidden Video Ads In Android
The buzzfeed article goes into more detail, but the short answer is that the fraudsters buy a cheap banner ad in an app. They then resell that space for a higher fee, running a video that is hidden behind the banner ad. Because the video just keeps running, the brand whose ad it is ends up paying even more to the fraudsters.
