TheGuyWhoCodes··on Kaspersky is declared a US national security threat and is banned by the FCC
All the enterprise businesses in the US I worked with, and had to go through security audits, already banned the use of Kaspersky. Even for suppliers.

I guess this just makes it official.

TheGuyWhoCodes··on Nvidia Hopper GPU Architecture and H100 Accelerator
Just look at Cerebras Wafer-Scale Engine it's basically a chip the size of a Wafer but it's not cheap...
TheGuyWhoCodes··on PyTorch vs. TensorFlow in Academic Papers
Honestly today there are way too many options.

There is TorchServe but I haven't used it so I'm not sure how production ready it is. You have Nvidia's triton server which support cpu and gpu with tf1,tf2,pytorch,onnx and tensorRT.

You have onnx runtime which can run on cpu and gpu and there are convertors from tf and pytorch to onnx.

Then you have cloud based solutions like AWS sagemaker, elastic inference endpoints and even Inf1 instances that use AWS Inferentia chips which you would run with the Neuron SDK, they even have TensorFlow serving containers with built it support for Inferentia.

End of the day it really depends on your model, size, latency, inference runtime and the cost obviously.

And that's before optimizations like FP16, BFLOAT16, TF32, INT8, pruning, layers rewrite, getting rid of batch normalization etc.

Then you have up and coming solutions like Neural Magic (not associated) deepsparse to create sparse models for inference.

And that's just for cloud if you are talking about edge ml it's even more down the rabbit hole..

TheGuyWhoCodes··on Log4j: Between a rock and a hard place
Not sure what you are talking about.

Java 11 was released on 2018-09-25

Java 11.0.2 that contained the "fix" was released on 2019-01-15

Java 11.0.13 (latest) was released on 2021-10-19

Also Java 8u192 was released on 2018-10-16

TheGuyWhoCodes··on Log4j: Between a rock and a hard place
I wasn't talkin about a 3rd party library, Java is your runtime platform it has security fixes roll out.

If you are an enterprise company that runs 3 year old java version then

1) Your CSO and CIO should all be fired

2) Your security team should be replaced

3) Your ISO 27001 and SOC2 certification among others should be revoked

TheGuyWhoCodes··on Log4j: Between a rock and a hard place
2-3 years is pretty old.

Java backward compatibility is really good, even better when it's on the same major I don't see why you shouldn't update. You have a docker image with java, just pull the base image before you build, you run it bare you/need to update the server packages periodically, better if you have unattended update setup (default in recent ubuntu versions tho might need a server restart for some to apply) It's not like between java updates there aren't any security fixes, there are so you should update.

Nevertheless other mitigations like not exposing internal services to the internet would have blocked these attempts.

TheGuyWhoCodes··on DuckDB quacks Arrow: A zero-copy data integration between Arrow and DuckDB
You could already run SQL on Parquet with DuckDB (even on Java). I believe it already used Arrow under the hood to read the Parquet files, could be wrong tho, but this is a more memory performant integration which is great.
TheGuyWhoCodes··on Intel Core i7-12700K Review
It depends on how much the game is CPU heavy, specially single core performance on some games makes a big difference. High end CPUs tend to have a higher single core performance.
TheGuyWhoCodes··on WSL2 can now mount Linux ext4 disks directly
yes, WSL2+Docker works well enough and a lot of tools have wsl and Docker integration so it's easy.

If you already use docker containers it's a win win.

TheGuyWhoCodes··on Zillow, Prophet, time series, and prices
I think it's true for any platform for housing markets. Once you have easy access to pricing of houses sold or being sold around you, as a seller you will try to be at the same ballpark and higher. So everyone ups the price by 5-10% so it becomes the new normal and repeat.
TheGuyWhoCodes··on How we built a serverless SQL database
That's not the reason, there are many but this a nice feature where a client can send one request and it will resolve internally (so less client side requests), you can request only the fields you need and it's easier when hitting multiple micro services.

Now you get into the issues of tracing, request failures and retries, payload size (only json? really..) etc.

But I do agree that a super optimized sql for a a specific purpose has it's performance benefit

TheGuyWhoCodes··on AMD Chipset Vulnerability Leaks Passwords
Note that this isn't an issue with the chipset itself but with the windows driver for the AMD Platform Security Processor.
TheGuyWhoCodes··on Windows 11 will create heaps of needless trash
I really don't see why they limit to 2.0 rather than 1.2 They could support both easily but choose not to.

This could be their way to lower the amount of testing they have to do, but for a company the size of Microsoft that's inexcusable.

That fact the 7th gen Intel (like the 7700k that has TPM 2.0) or first gen Zen aren't supported is bad enough but that Microsoft is silent about it and even their PMs and Security employees on twitter just brush it off as "There are more requirements" is pure BS.

TheGuyWhoCodes··on WD My Book users wake up to find their data deleted
Qnap had a lot of security issues in the past, like unpatched RCE and backdoors. I wouldn't recommend, (and never ever use qnap cloud or upnp) as it seems they don't really do a good job on software QA or penetration testing or security audits.

Hardware is fine but it's much more expensive than just building it yourself.

TheGuyWhoCodes··on Facebook to Begin Testing Oculus Ads in VR Headsets
Leela : Didn't you have ads in the 21st century?

Fry : Well sure, but not in our dreams. Only on TV and radio, and in magazines, and movies, and at ball games... and on buses and milk cartons and t-shirts, and bananas and written on the sky. But not in dreams, no siree.

Futurama was so ahead of time it's scary.

TheGuyWhoCodes··on Amazon blames social media for struggle with fake reviews
What a low effort argument blaming social networks.

It's not in the best interest of Amazon to fight this as long as it moves product and make them money, if they really cared they would create a system that detect this kind of behavior or just buy https://www.fakespot.com/

If they really cared they wouldn't allow someone to sell the same product manufactured en mass in china and just slaps some random name to be sold.

If they really cared they would "test" or validate products before they are listed on their platform.

TheGuyWhoCodes··on Shocked to find smart thermostats raised remotely by “Smart Savers Texas” progrm
Enroll into a program to allow energy companies to modify your set temperature in exchange for a free thermostats or credits and be shocked when the energy company make good on the agreement... It's nothing new and have existed for years in Texas, this man didn't read the fine print and was just happy to get free stuff.

This is called demand response programs and existed for years.

It's a way to shave the peak instead of building a new power station.

You usually get a notification in advance so you can opt out.

This is nothing new and existed in the past in some forms. There are also programs to remote control water heaters (to turn them on at night when demand is low) by having special circuitry in the electric box.

This will also be implemented more and extended as home EV charging stations pop up.

TheGuyWhoCodes··on Spectre mitigations murder userspace performance
This was very well known when the mitigations came out but I do wonder if they were too broad. sure mitigation in place for a platform that run untrusted code like a browser make sense but should it affect every program running? I know trust is fickle but at least for power user there should be an option to disable mitigation on a per program basis.
TheGuyWhoCodes··on Saudi Arabia executes Mustafa al-Darwish for teenage protests
I'm not going to debate International law on HN, it's a complicated issue with a lot of details and I'm not an International law lawyer and interpreting the law at face value without going back the intent of the law when it was formed is wrong but then I'm sure you agree with every law your country pass without judgment right?

> Israel wanted the land but not its original population

It's probably true that the founders didn't want to control the Arab population (not out of racisms) but as it turns out they have 2 million Arab citizens. I do agree that a one state solution couldn't work now demographically as that would be an apartheid state.

> so you think that Jews now have a right to do the evil

Who is dehumanizing who now...

The point was the formation of Israel in 48, the parent talked about territories other than gaza and the west bank, It's just that it's disingenuous to pick on Israel at that time saying they are the baddies just because they won, they were fighting for survival and against the annihilation of the Jews in that region and that one of the reasons that this still an issue because unlike other countries Israel did not annihilate their enemies, if the Arabs won in 48 there wouldn't be a debate because all the Israeli Jews would be dead and the world would go on like it's another day and just mark it in the footnote of history as the 2nd Jewish holocaust and that's it.

I do think the west bank occupation is wrong and should be "solved" but it's far from evil because intent matters, why there is an occupation matters, they reasons behind Israel actions matter, actions Israel don't make as the occupying force matter.

But I'm closing this discussion because it leads to nowhere and the bots downvoting me within 1 minute of commenting needs a break, have a good day.

> Palestinians said they're against the mass migration of Jews

Ofc they would. So what? They weren't the rulers or had any form of government, most of the land didn't belong to them no matter how gerrymandering maps you want to draw. It was the British mandate before the ottoman before that.....

> mass migration of Jews there that displaced them

It didn't. The land Jews settled on was purchased since the 1880s.

A lot of those Palestinians were immigrants themselves who came to Palestine for work, and the Jewish population were the ones that hired them. Most of Palestine before the Jews started to immigrate and built was deserts and swamps, no one wanted to live there until the Jewish population terraformed them to be livable.

> Why is it that you think Palestinians only have the right to Gaza and the West Bank

Because they lost the war they started, you can't start a war lose and then cry that you lost territory. They didn't want a Jewish state at all, or be under Jewish rule.

That's how countries form, that's how borders are made. Every other country in the world was formed by conflict it's just that most of those countries annihilated the other side long ago so there is almost no one left to hear their voice or go on a twitter rampage.

TheGuyWhoCodes··on Saudi Arabia executes Mustafa al-Darwish for teenage protests
> We already established that they don't say that.

We haven't, you didn't.

> when you cannot hit the army

They do but it's just easier to just cut a fence and stab children sleeping, that's not legitimate struggle that's barbarism and terrorisms.

> willing to use any means

That's exactly the point, when the end justify the means. What they do, how they operate that's evil. It has nothing to do with justice.

> your country had been invaded

The PLO was founded in 64 way before any occupation of the west bank and gaza so your point of fighting your oppressor is moot unless you consider the occupation the entire state of Israel then your legal argument is void.

They didn't struggle against their Egyptian and Jordanian "occupation" but when it's Jews, oy vey.

TheGuyWhoCodes··on Saudi Arabia executes Mustafa al-Darwish for teenage protests
Everyone doesn't like a specific group doesn't matter what the basis is or reason, but that wasn't the point of the argument, that point was about dehumanization.

You want to struggle against oppressors, ok , I get that but when you say you want the utter annihilation and destruction of a racial group when you praise and actively work to bomb busses, stab people in the street and in their homes, when you dig tunnels to pop up in the Kibbutz dining room, when you blow incendiary balloons that destroy forests and nature reserves killing countless wild life you are not human, you are an evil daemon that should be eradicated just as was done with nazi Germany and ISIS.

TheGuyWhoCodes··on Saudi Arabia executes Mustafa al-Darwish for teenage protests
> single piece

It's their actions not just this document. It's the calling of Jihad that's not changed. Calling for the destruction of Israel that has not changed. If they wanted to "change", their action would reflect that, what you linked is just a lipstick on a pig to appeal to the westerns media and mind set to look more tolerant but they truly aren't.

If ISIS suddenly had a more "tolerant" charter and leadership would you change their mind about them?

TheGuyWhoCodes··on Saudi Arabia executes Mustafa al-Darwish for teenage protests
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamas_Covenant

Calling for the destruction of Israel isn't calling to kill the Jews?

Calling for Jihad against the Jews and quoting Islamic religious texts to provide justification for fighting against and killing the Jews isn't an incitement for genocide?

This reads just like mein kampf, if this was written by a white person you would call him a nazi.

TheGuyWhoCodes··on Saudi Arabia executes Mustafa al-Darwish for teenage protests
So what you are saying is that we should wait couple of hundreds of years and then there is a statute of limitation?

How far in history do we need to go for context?

- 67 (6 day war)?

- 64 (PLO founding)

- 48 (Israel independence)?

- 1920 Nebi Musa riots, 1921 Jaffa riots, 1929 Palestine riots, 1936–1939 Arab revolt in Palestine?

TheGuyWhoCodes··on Saudi Arabia executes Mustafa al-Darwish for teenage protests
It's not dehumanization when the group is based on literally killing of Jews (Not even just in Israel). He didn't say Palestinians as a whole. When you show compassion for the cruel you'll end up being cruel to the merciful.
TheGuyWhoCodes··on Netanyahu is out as new Israeli government survives confidence vote
I can't see how you mentioned Egypt and Saudi Arabia as dreaded regimes but see Iranian supporting the Syrian regime as positive where they are the same and even worse on some accounts. Syria needs to be split up into at least 3 or 4 countries that's why there was so much internal tension there but you want to preserve the current ruthless regime who bombed their own civilians by the 100s of thousands, despicable.

They don't preserver the existing state they plan to take over and rule from a far.

> Israel clashed with it to the point they began aiding Syrian rebels

Israel assisted the rebels by giving medical aid so they won't hurt the druze population in Syria because the druze in Israel are blood relatives and enlist in the Israeli military that's a far cry from suppling weapons and intel

> overwhelmingly in Israel's favour.

You still didn't explain how.

TheGuyWhoCodes··on Netanyahu is out as new Israeli government survives confidence vote
Lebanon as a country was never a real threat to Israel but the PLO terrorist organization that started the civil war after trying to take over Jordan.

The Lebanese government let Hezbollah get the way it is by first allowing the PLO into south Lebanon bowing to Syria and having no backbone and shit military and now they suffer for it.

Do you think Israel was jealous of the Paris of the middle east and set up Hezbollah to take over?

> And? Not much has changed from that fact

Your whole argument was that Hezbollah is good for Israel, how thousands of rocket aiming at your population centers good for Israel? That's why what you wrote is bull.

TheGuyWhoCodes··on Netanyahu is out as new Israeli government survives confidence vote
It doesn't. It just sales ads well.

1) Report on a minor issues in Israel 2) Make it "world news" 3) Escalate the tension 4) Rip those clicks.

Do you think reporting on some stone throwing or a house eviction should be the top headline in CNN? These don't remotely compare to what's going on in Africa, Yemen or east Ukraine.

TheGuyWhoCodes··on Netanyahu is out as new Israeli government survives confidence vote
What a load of bull.

Israel supports who is aligned with their regional objectives. Like when they supported Iran before the takeover. You work with what you got, there isn't big love between Israel and Egypt or Saudi Arabia and why single Israel? Everyone in the world has relationships with these 2 countries.

It's true that a strong Lebanon or Syria aren't in the best Interest of Israel military wise but at least there was someone in charge to keep the "peace" now it's chaos with Iranian backed groups working close to the border to destabilize it and Hezbollah has thousands of rockets pointing at Israel that's not in the best interest of Israel
