I think it's very difficult to make decent money charging upfront for a mobile app that is to appeal to a broad market.
As someone else said, it's basically account people clicking around, you fix stuff, they click more until they feel comfortable presenting it to the client. Then you find out that some bigwig at the client has a 5yr old blackberry where the layout doesn't work right, and that becomes your focus of your debugging for a week.
Fantastic point.
Not only should the students/parents be asking themselves about what return they expect on $100k, the people loaning the money should be too. And because the feds are the ones guaranteeing the money, they don't care about the return, they just care about politicizing it to their advantage.
We have these automated warehouses and factory floors with robotic carts that can precisely navigate, pickup and deliver loads without a lot of infrastructure needed, that's kinda where I'm coming from.
I'm thinking the solution would have to work with the existing sized doorways for it to be adopted.
Everyone schlepping all their crap through security and on to the plane is 90% of the problem.
This would also allow you to quickly deplane, but have the next group of passengers already seated, ready to slide into the plane.
The boarding problem is human, and also spacial. And you can't really get rid of the humans, but you could change the space.
Freight transport has been containerized, how can we do it to passenger transport?
I agree, its all about having kids and growing up. Once your children become your priority, your school district becomes important, and every major urban center in the USA has a school system somewhere between bad and god-awful. Watch the movies Waiting For Superman and The Cartel if you want to see what a mess that situation is. I don't see it getting resolved in the next 5-10 years, which is when gen y will start having kids.
For their print editions they mail surveys to a subset of readers, use those results to show advertisers what their subscriber base is made of. The advertisers create a one-size-fits-all print ad for all those people.
And then for digital... they continuing doing the same thing and wonder why no one wants to pay for their ads!
Deliver a digital issue for free each month with a 3 to 5 question survey before download. BUILD ON the results each month, so you get a personalized ad profile for that reader. And then DELIVER appropriate targeted ads in the issue to that reader.
I realize I'm not revealing anything new or ground-breaking, but I've worked in the publishing industry and you wouldn't believe how many high-level people don't understand this at all.
Not only are the digital magazine products right now terrible themselves, the ad model is completely broken, and I've seen almost no progress on either front. Time is running out for these guys.
Unless your mortgage is like 8% or more, it would be wiser to put that money in stocks for the long term.
You're borrowing money at (say) 4% to own a home. That's a great rate, why be in a hurry to pay it back if you could earn 8% per year over the next 10yrs in the stock market?
Secondly, I believe we're on the cusp of significant double digit inflation. So your debt will inflate itself away. Put that cash you have now into something that will protect against inflation, that means something that will inflate itself. Stocks aren't a bad choice for that either.
If it turns out to be economic collapse type inflation, well then you might want to spend that money on actual hard things, like firearms, ammunition, food, fuel.
Obviously if you have any credit card debt in the range of 15%, pay that off first.
You don't have a constitutional right to fly on an airplane.
You ARE supposed to be protected from unreasonable searches though. If $100 means that you no longer need to be frisked/scanned, when then that kinda proves that those are unreasonable searches, they certainly are unnecessary.
Yeah, it's great that some people have the time and talent to gain deep understanding of their computer and software. Some of us just want to use great tools to actually build things and don't have the time to learn something new.
Version control shouldn't have to be hard. I don't understand why some programmers think it's a step backwards to use tools to make things easier. Yeah, maybe you lose some understanding in the abstraction, but not everyone who wants to use VCS needs to know deeply how it works.
Everyone talks up git, but few every seem to actually use it, or use it to its full potential. And I agree that this has a lot to do with a crappy interface.
If git is truly the next great step in source code management, shouldn't it be easy to use? Isn't that kinda the definition of great software? You shouldn't have to be a linux command-line cowboy to have to use and understand git.
Look at the prices of your average 47" LCD HDTV sets, way over $500. And they're probably making less money per unit than the iPad. I don't know how Apple is doing it.
Lots of family-friendly products too, which is something that is always key for both companies.
The time is now. Consumers are increasingly not seeing the value in cable TV any more, where is that $100+/month going to go? Apple, Amazon, Netflix? Apple has the closest thing to a real TV app platform, and lots of developers behind it too. The content is the missing piece.
Possibly an indicator of how this will go: watch what the newspaper/mag/book publishers do with a new retina iPad. Do they finally embrace? Do they stop putting out glorified PDFs of their print products and calling them digital magazines? Was Apple able to partner with anyone for the iPad3 launch? 5 years from now it's going to be an expensive luxury to get a printed newspaper or magazine delivered to your house. Everyone is ready for this EXCEPT the content producers!
The data is there. The tech is here. It's the lawyers holding this back. And the CEOs who think they'll still be able to rake in huge profits from selling TV rights 5 years from now.
ESPN, you know cableTV is what made you, you should be smart enough to realize that cableTV has started its decline.
Would love to see ESPN/Disney/ABC partner with Apple to build a real interactive TV platform.

Mueller wrist brace with splint
It only worked with a full-size keyboard and mouse. I can't wear it while typing on my laptop. I'll occasionally pop an Aleve in the morning if my forearm is bothering me.
Previously I was having occasional numbness and tingling in my right wrist. That has gone away.
Doc also suggested wearing a soft wrap on my wrist at night. Keep the area warm to promote healing, and keeps it in a relatively neutral position to prevent further inflammation.

I also have started lifting weights, though my doc said that could actually be putting further strain on the area. I think that was the case at first, but now I feel like my arms are strong, but more importantly my core and upper body and back are stronger. Helps with posture, and a lot of times the root of the wrist pain originates with other parts of you body being in a poor position all day. (skip the isolation exercises and just do compound exercises, especially deadlifts, probably the most underrated and unsexy, but its one of the best exercises)
Make sure your desk is low enough. It was subtle, but lowering it an inch put a lot less pressure on my forearms and less reaching.
And I drink a ton of water all day, which ensures I get up at least once an hour to pee or fill my water bottle. As others have said, taking breaks could be the most important.
I feel like the young girl every time I'm at a friends house and trying to navigate whatever cable/sat guide they have. Seriously, it's 2012 and I'm paging through this endless list of "channels" labeled by NUMBER and a CALLSIGN? 1006 WKOW-HD. 12.1 ABC. Try to watch Jeopardy and get assaulted with denture paste, hearing aides, and adult diaper commercials! What the heck is going on? It is truly astonishing how bad the UI for these set-top boxes is, combined with the process of finding out what and where the correct ESPNx channel (HD or not HD) is to watch the game.
Huge potential for serious changes in this industry. I don't like to throw such a vague word like "app" around, but that is the future. ESPN will have an app that will deliver their content in the best way. The closest thing I've seen to this is the work Major League Baseball is doing on mobile and TV. They're able to provide the video/audio, but augment it with other datastream. For sports this makes so much sense.
This inspires me to try out TileMill on one of my own projects.
The richest kids can already go to private schools and get a great prep education.
The poorest kids are stuck in terrible public school districts because of their zipcode, yet the per pupil spending can be as high as private schools.
Now if these kids are given a choice, say, here's a voucher for $10k, enroll in a virtual school, get an $500 iPad loaded with $100 worth of material. That's a BARGAIN! And it will only get cheaper.
The future of education is choice and private schools. It can still be public in terms of it being funded by public funds, but there's no reason to have the government running schools. They're doing a terrible job, and it has to stop because it's so important that we have good schools.
You've probably only set it under Icon files -> primary icon
You can tell if you did it right if it shows up without the shine in itunes connect when you upload.
If shareholders (ie owners) want short term leadership, that's what they get. No one is forcing you to sell your shares every time the stock price moves. Buy and hold.
