TheChaplain··on Burnend alive inside a Tesla as rescuers fail to open the car's door
The Civic Touring is/was high end, and rather more expensive.

Mine is a cheaper, european model, which if you are willing to pay for it, of course have all the fancy stuff like keyless ignition, auto door locks, auto high beam system, security systems etc as addons to the standard model.

I'm not that rich so..

TheChaplain··on Burnend alive inside a Tesla as rescuers fail to open the car's door
> All modern cars have been locking the doors for the last 20 years or so, as far as I know.

No? My Honda Civic from 2016 certainly does not.

Accessibility requirement is also something that EU is taking quite seriously lately, and if FOSS wants to be a part of something more than home enthusiasts, then it has to step up.

TheChaplain··on Europol said ChatControl doesn't go far enough; they want to retain data forever
Kind of funny that years ago I was insulted and talked down to when I said that EU going from trade union to federalisation is a bad idea.

Chat Control and whatever is following from that is just the beginning.

TheChaplain··on MAGA declares war on the property tax
Property tax is a great way to force elderly out of their homes they've been living in for years.
TheChaplain··on Why Dishwashers Are Quietly Disappearing from American Homes
Also the amount of plastic garbage that piles up. One container for the noodles, one for the chicken, 2 or more small ones for sauces/condiments, utensils and so on..
TheChaplain··on Why Dishwashers Are Quietly Disappearing from American Homes
I quite don't understand the issue, yes they do take some time to do the dishes but modern machines have very efficient water consumption compared to hand washing the same load.

Mine takes about 3.5h to clean in eco-mode. I set it to run just before I go to bed so it's everything is crisp and dry well before I wake up.

The win for me is time, less dry hands and a little happiness that I've not wasted too much clean water.

TheChaplain··on Ask HN: The government of my country blocked VPN access. What should I use?
The official word is to counter gambling. Lately the government is not really popular after some decisions that could be interpreted as authoritative, and as citizens have spoken out about it online, causing more voices to join and protests erupting..

So well, my guess is they're trying to control it.

TheChaplain··on Blender on iPad Is Finally Happening
I am probably a minority, but if anything, Apple should show Blender Foundation some real appreciation for bringing such great software to their platform.
TheChaplain··on 'We didn't vote for ChatGPT': Swedish PM under fire for using AI in role
It is not. Ask your family, friends, acquaintances how much they use AI in their work and even at home to get through paperwork.

I am very interested in new technology and how people use it, I've brought it up a lot in my own circles and encountered several occasions where some "stop thinking" and takes the output from ChatGPT as "done-and-dusted".

And remember that people at municipal offices are just normal humans like you and me. Most just want to get things over with so they can go home, and AI is a convenient tool to help with that.

TheChaplain··on 'We didn't vote for ChatGPT': Swedish PM under fire for using AI in role
The danger is not on such high level, as all decisions are highly scrutinized by the public.

But on the lower levels, where the insight is much much narrower and your ability to protest or influence the outcome is near zero... That I am worried about.

Municipals, councils, social services, make decisions that directly effect peoples lives. E.g. building permits, custody cases, restaurant permits and so so much more low level things.

And I somewhat understand, if you have a stack of cases to go through and ChatGPT can shorten it from 6 hours to 30 seconds, then why not? Never mind the details, if the outcomes at a glance seems match the average then lets go.

TheChaplain··on Why leather is best motorcycle protection [video]
Getting a motorcycle license was a very good thing I've done for my life. Cruising on long roads, beautiful views, wild camping and meeting other people in a like-minded community. It really heals your mind and body.

But obviously it comes with higher risk as you are more exposed and higher demands on your abilities. And good gear can help, but if it is not combined with training and of course a sound attitude, you may sooner or later find yourself in an undesirable situation.

Go to refresher courses. I do it every year to update myself and get an idea of my current limits. It really helps.

To see what I meant about attitude, just go on Instagram and check for motorcycle reels, you'll see soo many examples of how to not act in traffic or what to do on a motorcycle.

TheChaplain··on Chrome and Firefox display the same Washington Post article differently
OP probably have addons or some setting in either browser that cause the difference. Page looks same if I run in private browsing on both browsers.
TheChaplain··on So you're a manager now
One-sided text that don't nearly speak the whole truth.

It fails to take into account that as a manager you may very will end up with employees that are toxic, disrespectful, cheating, lazy, incompetent, intolerant, unmanageable...

And contrary to popular belief, that it is not always the managers fault.

I had a close relative become a manager, tried their utmost for a year but gave up. It was not worth the sleepless nights, stress, therapy and sitting in the parking lot crying their eyes out after work.

TheChaplain··on Most people who buy games on Steam never play them
I am somewhat guilty, but I bought a number of Humble Bundle's (when it was the original one) and got a huge number of games I am not interested in.

So I guess I fit in but still not?

TheChaplain··on Python 3.14 will officially support free-threading
> Any decision to transition to phase III, with free-threading as the default or sole build of Python is still undecided, and dependent on many factors both within CPython itself and the community. This decision is for the future.

Compiler flag would be my guess.

TheChaplain··on My open source project was relicensed by a YC company [license updated]
> The GPL is a good enough idea but it is basically impossible for anyone to realistically enforce.

Really? If you find a piece of proprietary software does basically the same thing as yours, and the binaries contains the same strings/artwork, then it's reasonable to make a legal case of it. You can even contact FSF and they'll take it further.
