TheChaplain··on r/programming bans all discussion of LLM programming
Seems a lot of commenters here dislike their decision, I like it though. LLM-generated projects, articles, blogs are low-effort products lacking authenticity.

And the discussion on LLM itself can in the long run be fairly tiring, follow r/LocalLLaMA for a while and you'll see what I mean. But if you are really into LLMs though, that sub is great.

It is simply not fun to go on to a subreddit, seeing 90% being projects and blogs that is obviously created using AI, and authentic content being pushed to the side due to the high volume of artificial works. r/Python was horrible at one point, but the mods have been stepping up their game.

TheChaplain··on LibreOffice and the Art of Overreacting
Donated just now, worth every coin for what Calc and Impress gives me.
TheChaplain··on Sed, a powerfull mini-language from the 70s
This one feels more authentic.

TheChaplain··on Google details new 24-hour process to sideload unverified Android apps
The criticism against this decision seem to often miss the point of it IMHO.

Let's be realistic, there IS a problem with sideloaded apps being downloaded by ignorant people, and they do get scammed/hacked or whatever.

This leads to unhappy people complaining to their banks, politicians and media, these in turn starts lighting a fire under Googles bottom.

So, my point being, how do we solve the ACTUAL problem with rogue apps then?

TheChaplain··on Google details new 24-hour process to sideload unverified Android apps
Budget-wise it becomes impossible.

Coin-operated meters means someone have to come around checking the meter, collect coins, check the parking tickets. One person can only cover so many devices per day.

Then you have mechanical maintenance, with that comes disputes with "it was broken, it didn't accept the money" and so forth.

I've probably forgotten a number of other related things, but compare the above to digital solution.

Parking app, where the customer pays only for the parked time, no fiddling with money or keeping track of time. The parking attendant checks much quicker by just scanning the license plate while walking the rounds (could be done via car and a mounted camera even).

Analog just costs more, and citizens doesn't want taxes to go to things that are not strictly necessary.

TheChaplain··on Illinois Introducing Operating System Account Age Bill
Curious how OpenBSD or Haiku will comply.
TheChaplain··on Bars close and hundreds lose jobs as US firm buys Brewdog in £33M deal
No conspiracy here.

Brewdog had a loss of 37m GBP last October, and went into something similar to Chapter11(?), american company bought the remains and saved what had any value left.

So not really "evil company buys good company and fires everyone" IMHO.

edit: useless at spelling...

TheChaplain··on NASA announces overhaul of Artemis program amid safety concerns, delays
If you visit US, I really recommend a detour to the Kennedy Space Center if you can, there's a ton of interesting stuff especially about the Apollo program.
TheChaplain··on Burger King will use AI to check if employees say 'please' and 'thank you'
Well, you may not like it, but BK probably have done their research and found that employees positive interaction with customers equals more sales.

Yes, there are probably a thousand other actions they could take to increase number of sold meals, but my guess this one is easy pickings, i.e. cost vs return.

TheChaplain··on What podcasts are you listening to?
"The Beekeeper's Corner", excellent if you are interested in beekeeping.
TheChaplain··on Why the KeePass format should be based on SQLite
Just create a new password manager using SQLCipher then? If it is good enough people will use it.

It is weird when people wants to change something that works just great.

KeePass have served me well for years on Windows, Mac, Android, Linux using Dropbox and Syncthing as storage. Don't mess with it.

TheChaplain··on Terence Tao, at 8 years old (1984) [pdf]
I am interested in his new book, "Six Math Essentials", but I doubt it will be on my very low level of math understanding..
TheChaplain··on Ask HN: Have you ever cloned a cat?
It is not strange if you ever had a pet that meant a lot to you.

I know people who have grieved for months after losing their cat and their dog. Their connection was much more than "just a pet", it became family and as important as a child, sibling or parent.

Cloning is of course not guarantee the pet will be exactly as the original, but if there's a chance it will have similar personality I can very much understand the willingness to pay for it.

TheChaplain··on EU bans the destruction of unsold apparel, clothing, accessories and footwear
Don't be surprised if products are sent abroad for destr^Wrecycling.

No I am not joking, some german company hid an airtag in a old computer that went to recycling. It ended up somewhere in Thailand, being not very environmentally friendly taken care of.

TheChaplain··on EU bans the destruction of unsold apparel, clothing, accessories and footwear
Local producers.

Businesses importing from non-EU countries have to shoulder the responsibility in stead of the manufacturer.

TheChaplain··on Discord Alternatives, Ranked
What most people here seem to forget, is once a social platform gains traction and especially attention from the main masses, it undoubtedly require checks and balances.

Predators, racism, gore, pedophilia, harassment, stalking and so on..

No matter how high you value security, these are matters that hurt real people today. If you attract the mainstream, you must deal with it.

TheChaplain··on British drivers over 70 to face eye tests every three years
Gonna suck to lose your license when you live in outer places like Roadhead, Carlisle. :(
TheChaplain··on Notepad++ supply chain attack breakdown
> Linux people are very resistant to this

Because security people often does not know the balance between security and usability, and we end up with software that is crippled and annoying to use.

TheChaplain··on KDE Binds Itself Tightly to Systemd, Drops Support for Non-Systemd Systems
> Title is misleading Well, it's easier to get engagement with some bait.

I wish it wasn't more or less a standard these days..

TheChaplain··on Microsoft is walking back Windows 11's AI overload
Not surprised it took so long, the decision makers seems to be quite out of touch with the user base.

Which makes me believe that their "walk back" is just to change the packaging of the same old "slop" being shoved down their customers throats.

TheChaplain··on Amiga Unix (Amix)
> Its kernel, libc, and much of its software is closed source, so when Commodore folded its story was over.

I am certain someone have the full source code somewhere, I just hope that they eventually say "f--k it, it has been 36 years, let the world have it".

TheChaplain··on If you tax them, will they leave?
I believe the level will simply be adjusted then, the middle class end up being heavier taxed.

But that is usually a fairly large group, and if they feel taxes are too much, they will listen to any politician that promises a solution.

Then it can become pretty nasty...

TheChaplain··on Proton spam and the AI consent problem
> It may be cryptographically superior, but does that matter at the end of the day if nobody uses it?

I've made a few attempts to convert people, but no-go. People stay on Telegram and WhatsApp because they have better UX and features.

Signal refuses to see the value in good attractive UX.

TheChaplain··on Tell HN: Bending Spoons laid off almost everybody at Vimeo yesterday
I have no hope for Vimeo.

BS took over Evernote and I cancelled the subscription after a year. Their idea of value for the customer vs the price is not realistic.

TheChaplain··on Parliament tells Dutch government to keep DigiD data out of American hands
I may be too cynical but when it comes to politicians, the disconnect feels more than a rule than exception.

It is hard to vote, being buttered up with promises and pretty speeches, just to be disappointed halfway to next election.

TheChaplain··on Gmail is entering the Gemini Era
Another happy davx5 user here, it is so good I donated.
TheChaplain··on Jeffgeerling.com has been migrated to Hugo
I use pelican, with a bunch of self-made plugins, and it works very well. There's a few commits every month, so it's not a dead project.
TheChaplain··on Denmark becomes first country in world to end letter delivery
I hope the charges are on the sending part, if I would have to sign up to receive letters I see some issues..

And yeah, elderly and digitalization is not always working well. Where I live the average age is ~80, and people need assistance to use the laundry machine.

The booking system for the public facilities such as laundry services is a piece of paper.

TheChaplain··on NYC phone ban reveals some students can't read clocks
The fact that US children doesn't know how to read clocks doesn't surprise me, but what about other countries?

Is reading a clock taught to students in India, Japan, China, Chile?

TheChaplain··on Volkswagen to close German plant, a first in their company history
