TheCapeGreek··on 1 in 5 online job postings are either fake or never filled, study finds
Perhaps.

For the time being, leveraging a network is still the best way to get hired.

I think in my career so far in ~8 companies and many clients, I only got one of those jobs From a "cold" job posting application. Everything else was at least a soft referral by an acquaintance.

TheCapeGreek··on Banning TikTok Is Unconstitutional. The Supreme Court Must Step In
The word around socials seems to be that users are just moving to Rednote, another Chinese social media app - doesn't that just defeat the purpose of this and end up with a cat and mouse game?

Okay, fair, my bad!

TheCapeGreek··on 1 in 5 online job postings are either fake or never filled, study finds
You're not wrong, but all you've ended up describing to the poster is that you don't actually have a network to leverage for finding work - which is what they're advocating for here, not walking into places to hand physical resumes.
TheCapeGreek··on I failed moving my Google calendar to Proton
Yeah, unfortunately this is one of those sandpaper tradeoffs for some users with some of the Proton suite and how they approach privacy (and its consequences for you as the end user).

I've had similar bugbears with their other products which end up in me not using anything except the core mail product.

They seem to improve things over time, but it's a game of patience.

E.g. I stopped using the Drive apps and only use it as an async backup store, because it keeps creating sync conflict files if you sync something you edit frequently (like an Obsidian vault). It also for some reason kept setting my user permissions to read only for my note files while it did this (on macOS).

TheCapeGreek··on Using coding skills to make passive income
I'm not talking about selling shovels in general.

I'm talking about the specific SaaS starter kit trend of recent and that Cory's work predates it - specifically because of snark like yours, which has seen an uptick because of the recent trend.

TheCapeGreek··on Using coding skills to make passive income
Cory built and grew SaaSPegasus to success long before the starter kit trend among indie hackers of the last year.
TheCapeGreek··on How corn syrup took over America
If the actual total sugar (or sugarlike) content decreased along with the corn syrup, there definitely would be differences.

Ask anyone who's visited the US about how the food tastes. It's not just that serving portions are much bigger, but everything just tastes sweeter too. I've had people tell me they visited the states and even the plain white bread was sweet in comparison to everywhere else.

TheCapeGreek··on I deleted my social media accounts
I've felt this too - in the end, especially if you're distraction or addiction prone (e.g. ADHD), you'll mostly find something else to fill that void.

But, some options are better than others. I used to be on Twitter a lot, and had that reflex for a time after deleting it. Now... it's just not there. I did replace it with a handful of communities and some other forms of content, but it still feels better than before.

TheCapeGreek··on I deleted my social media accounts
For point #2, I've started evaluating business ideas by how much I can either outsource social media posting or not need it at all. Preferably the latter.
TheCapeGreek··on I deleted my social media accounts
You can easily replace FB with Instagram in this context. Nobody I know personally posts very much on Facebook, but they do post their updates on Instagram stories.

Facebook's last hook on me is groups - small town community groups especially. If you live in an area with its own group, there's a high likelihood that it's going to be on Facebook.

I don't really have the time to campaign to non tech-savvy retiring gen Xers and their parents that I don't want to use Facebook to know what's happening in my area, find services, etc.

TheCapeGreek··on What it's like working for American companies as an Australian
100000%.

I envy those who seem to keep the facade up after their own career hardships.

TheCapeGreek··on LA wildfires force thousands to evacuate, NASA JPL closed
Similar climates and geographies both either have the issue or manage it better.

Greece is a good example of also not managing this properly with its own regular massive fires, while national parks around Cape Town and other parts of South Africa do regular controlled burns in very rocky, hill-y terrain.

TheCapeGreek··on Polywork Shuts Down
Tried it when it was a LinkedIn competitor.

There's one thing that I notice with these sorts of startups that take on larger social network apps.

If you're not in the US and you try it, chances are you'll find very few users from your own region.

For some platforms that's fine, you can find plenty of others to interact with online where location isn't that big an issue (eg BlueSky). But for something like a professional network it's different. You're very likely building your career network based on who you actually know, which is often starting from your area or country. That makes something like Polywork pretty pointless early on.

TheCapeGreek··on Ask HN: Programmers who don't use autocomplete/LSP, how do you do it?
Making mistakes within code logic can happen with any degree of tool, yes.

Using an LSP will at least clearly highlight when you're making the most basic syntax mistake.

Don't do your job worse in tech you don't know when you're expected to perform at a certain professional level.

TheCapeGreek··on Ask HN: Programmers who don't use autocomplete/LSP, how do you do it?
If you're new to the language or stack and make absurdly basic syntax mistakes, yes I consider using an LSP-capable editor of some kind a qualifier.

Don't do your job worse just because of your tooling preference. Do what you want when you know you can do the job well and not waste reviewer time.

TheCapeGreek··on Ask HN: Programmers who don't use autocomplete/LSP, how do you do it?
...and if you're new to the language, it's easy to trip up, especially if you also have habits of not always testing even "simple" code.

It's not the sole cause to not use IDE tooling, but it is a significant contributor.

TheCapeGreek··on Are Immutable Linux Distros right for you?
For most users, including many developers, SteamOS absolutely can be general purpose.

There are two main "daily driver" usability issues on SteamOS by default if you need to do technical work:

- Limited software availability via the flatpak repositories.

- Not being able to install certain programs as easily without needing containerisation of some kind (if that even solves the problem in some cases).

Distrobox solves a good amount of both issues on SteamOS, for coding work at least. Slap a virtual Ubuntu on and you're off to the races.

TheCapeGreek··on Ask HN: Programmers who don't use autocomplete/LSP, how do you do it?
PSA: No matter how good you are, please don't do this if you're working in a tech stack you are not familiar with, in a team with people who are experts and are using fully fledged IDEs.

There will be inevitable ultra-basic mistakes, especially if you're also not familiar with testing the code you're actually writing.

I say this as a specialist using an IDE and having had PRs sent to me that weren't even syntactically valid, because the developer was not using an LSP in a language they were not familiar with.

TheCapeGreek··on GitHub Spark lets you build web apps in plain English
The wording of this does imply they've trademarked the word Spark, but that really doesn't sound likely.
TheCapeGreek··on GitHub Spark lets you build web apps in plain English
So Laravel Spark is also a problem?
TheCapeGreek··on Quit Social Media (2016)
>Private spaces where small groups collect may be social media by its definition

Kind of, depending on the platform, if you squint your eyes at it?

I suppose it doesn't matter what it's actually called. I call it community in general.

Communities in this sense are the middle ground between your direct personal network (which is also the deepest form of relation), and social media as the widest (the shallowest form of relation) form of reach.

TheCapeGreek··on Ask HN: In 2024 what's the best way to manage contacts?
This seems to have been the case for quite a while now, with very little news coming out of the team.

Their "OfficeLife" tool banner is still on the main site as well, with an expected release of May 2022.

Development seems to be quite slow overall.

TheCapeGreek··on Breaking Down OnlyFans' Economics
I would liken it as "digital sexual companionship" in many cases, rather than just porn. That's the value here, for a lot of the same reasons that people would engage with a "traditional" prostitute/escort. It's just cheaper (at first), and less likely to get you arrested or put in dangerous areas.

The article makes mention of AI content potentially coming for this industry, but I believe it's the "GirlfriendGPT" and similar that will be the bigger threat, once they improve.

TheCapeGreek··on What I gave up to become an engineering manager
Yeah, I suppose I should have added in my post that I assume that is the normal way, but was hoping for any more potential tips.
TheCapeGreek··on What I gave up to become an engineering manager
Good piece. I've done mostly IC work but have had a stint as tech lead, where a lot of this applies even if people management wasn't directly part of my role.

One thing I'm curious about as well is more on the zero-to-one side of becoming an EM: If you're a "junior" manager, it seems there's quite a dearth of jobs out there. Everyone wants someone with 2+ years of experience. It's the same old entry-level-with-experience hiring conundrum, just happening again in your career.

Anyone have advice in that regard?

TheCapeGreek··on Ask HN: Can individual setup payment gateway like stripe easily?
If you're specifically needing something like stripe in order to charge customers in dollars (or any well known currency), and are limited by your local options, consider a Merchant of Record like LemonSqueezy, Paddle, or Gumroad.

They're usually fairly open to sole proprietor (no registered company) businesses in many countries.

TheCapeGreek··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (September 2024)
Location: Cape Town, South Africa (GMT+2, no DST) Remote: Yes Willing to relocate: To EU, excluding Greece (have EU citizenship) Technologies: Laravel, Livewire, JavaScript, but keen to diversify with things like Ruby/Rails, Elixir, Go, or Flutter. Resume/CV: https://www.nik.software/work Email: https://www.nik.software/work

Have had a decent time freelancing, but would like to get back to a team.

Backend-leaning web dev, having done lots of Laravel in many industries. Love tech communities (I even organise Laravel CPT!), experienced with remote international work (have some posts about it on my website above).

Aiming mostly for product companies, SaaS, startups etc - avoiding agencies/consulting.

Open to changing stack completely, but staying with Laravel won't hurt :)

TheCapeGreek··on Ask HN: Is it still a thing to receive payment via direct bank transfer in SaaS?
Some payment providers in some regions even offer this as a payment option, e.g. Payfast in South Africa.

Sometimes it's also about what systems customers are used to, or fees with each method.

If bank transfer is the only option, it's usually for businesses that payment providers won't touch (even if not illegal).
