TheBiv··on How many genes does it take to make a person?
This is one of those weird articles where having degrees in Biology, Genetics, and CS converges so bear with me as I explain a lot of domain specific terms

Central dogma reminder: DNA -> RNA -> Protein.

In the scheme of a person, a gene (DNA) doesn't mean as much as protein folding does. To give a programming example, DNA is the source code, RNA is the compiler and proteins are the executed program.

A "person" is the executed program bc it's the end result. However tracing a lineage back to the source code of DNA to figure out the smallest amount of code required to create the program is often difficult (if not impossible).

Genes are the blueprint, how those genes are transcribed into RNA and then translated into proteins matters FAR more than the amount of genes that it would take to make a sustainable human.

So while I understand what this article is trying to get at, it's missing the central dogma of molecular biology which is still the wild Wild West!

TheBiv··on Font Awesome 5
It appears that they are doing it for 2 reasons:

1. Using Kickstarter as a way to give PRO users a discount on their normal $40 rate. 2. Using Kickstarter as a way to market/announce their new business model.

If that's indeed why they are doing this as a Kickstarter then its a pretty great way to use Kickstarter, imho!

TheBiv··on How Houston Regulates Land Use
I don't know if it's Stockholm syndrome or not, but every one of my friends that are from Houston prefers the way they do it compared to every other city (like Dallas where I live).
TheBiv··on Investing for Geeks
I wish you had a sample chapter to review before plopping down $500.
TheBiv··on Ask HN: Single-person company exit
>> I managed to get competing bids for it from multiple companies, so the whole sale process is a story of its own.

I am interested in hearing this story! :) Thank you for the original comment as well!

TheBiv··on The New Panama Canal: A Risky Bet
Wow, what an incredible way to view content!

From the awesome drone videos detailing exactly what I'm looking at, to the great writing and the animations throughout; this was awesome!

TheBiv··on How Pantone Is Still Turning Color into Money (2015)

TheBiv··on T-Mobile is giving postpaid customers a free share of stock
Ah, interesting! Thank you for sharing!
TheBiv··on T-Mobile is giving postpaid customers a free share of stock
Yes you can sell the share if you own it, but you won't be getting $43 for free. Assume you get 1 share of T-mobile stock currently valued at $43.11 and you want to sell the stock.

Since you did not hold this stock for more than 1 year, you will be taxed at regular income so if we assume a 30% tax, then you will be left with $30.18.

[1] As the nandhp points out below, T-Mobile is issuing these shares exclusively through LOYAL3 and selling your share within 1 year will be fee-free.

TheBiv··on Clickbait and Traffic Laundering: How Ad Tech Is Destroying the Web
Given that Alphabet has 686.56M outstanding shares at the moment, this research firm believes that Google's market cap will go from it's current $495B to $137B.

TheBiv··on Blue Feed, Red Feed
>>One oddity that I haven't yet found an explanation for is that conservatives seem to be less prevalent online than liberals. I'm not quite sure why this is the case.

I live in Texas and I can definitely tell you that my internet experience is definitely not like that. In my neck of the internet, there are far more conservatives.

TheBiv··on Blue Feed, Red Feed
I definitely agree that your real-life circle has a large influence, but I can't dismiss how much the articles that people see effect how they talk about things.

Especially with the older generation. Anecdotally, I have seen my mother have very extreme opinions on things simply bc "she saw an article on facebook" and didn't fact check anything in the article. It was impossible for me to convince her that the article was wrong.

TheBiv··on Blue Feed, Red Feed
Wow, what an awesome experiment!

I know that FB shows me articles that their feed algorithm determines to be aligned with things I've clicked on before (so that I'll click again), however it's pretty shocking to how my clicks can effect what sort of articles I see.

It's almost as if every click digs me further and further into a specific bucket that shapes what I see and that I can't really climb out of.

TheBiv··on Nikola Motor Company
Yeah, definitely!

That is also what's confusing about the reservation price. If I was a buyer of trucks on a fleet, you can be darn sure that I'm paying more than $1,500 to land a truck.

TheBiv··on Nikola Motor Company
So I can reserve a truck for $1,500 and an ATV for $750. I know it's just the reservation fee, but it doesn't make any sense to me.
TheBiv··on Google Trends for Tumblr, Google+, Reddit, Twitter
Definitely!! I just used my personal anecdote to say that my "interest" is rarely with the service it is with the people using the service.
TheBiv··on Google Trends for Tumblr, Google+, Reddit, Twitter
Personal anecdote: I will google "<person> Twitter" to get their Twitter feed so I wonder how many of those searches are not necessarily interest in the service rather interest in a specific person using the service.

TheBiv··on Handful of Biologists Went Rogue and Published Directly to Internet
Ah, awesome!! Makes complete sense!

Thank you very much for unpacking it and all the best in your career in Biology! I am in tech now, but studied Biology at Texas A&M for undergrad so hearing the words in your response reminded me of the good ol' days!

TheBiv··on Handful of Biologists Went Rogue and Published Directly to Internet
Can you unpack what is meant by "to be parsed semantically by artificial intelligence algorithms"?

I understand the words, but in this context it has me a bit confused as to what problem you see AI solving.

TheBiv··on The Dark Ages of Austin Startup Capital
As someone who lives outside of the valley, what this article says to me is that I should be tougher in vetting the potential sources of revenue that the startup has and not just a startup that I think should exist in the market!
TheBiv··on The Dark Ages of Austin Startup Capital
Short answer: no

Long answer: Dallas has a lot of investment money, however most of that investment money goes towards cash flow businesses like commercial real estate, oil speculation, and banking. However, there has been a pretty sizable uptick in investment dollars willing to put towards tech companies within the last 4-5 years. It's relatively straightforward to find capital in Dallas, but it's insanely hard to find capital willing to stomach high burn early stage tech companies.

TheBiv··on Homejoy's Back. Kind of
Homeaglow.com already has an "As seen on" section in the source (commented out with sites such as The Huffington post, Forbes, WSJ, etc).
