TheBeardKing··on Chart Shows Who Marries CEOs, Doctors, Chefs and Janitors
There also seems to a disproportionate amount of male-male lines, weighted just as heavily as male-female lines. I don't think gay marriage is that prevalent to show up with equal weighting, but my cursory googling didn't turn up the number of gay couples in the US.

I think it's a familiarity bias with the occupation. More women have business degrees than nursing or education [1], but it may not seem so since business degree holders are more dispersed among types of businesses. The link seems to indicate that software developers are just as likely to marry accountants or nurses as teachers.

TheBeardKing··on The Sports Bubble Is About to Pop
I can't watch live TV due to the ads, and sports is no exception. If you've seen the statistics on actual play time during your average football or baseball game, you know how large a majority of time is given to mindless banter and commercial breaks. My sports viewing recently has been limited to gifs of incredible athletic feats, which are the rare moments you watch the games for anyway.

There's so much quality content produced for or available on on-demand streaming these days, to the extent of it being called the golden age of television, that when I have 2-3 hrs I could devote in front of the TV, I'm not going to give it up to a long sequence of commercial breaks. I'll catch the highlights of the game afterwards or just check the score on my phone.

That being said, going to live sporting event with friends always makes for a good time.

TheBeardKing··on Jury Duty
It's intended to eliminate people with preconceived biases, but attorney motives for selecting jurors usually go far beyond that. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jury_selection
TheBeardKing··on Jury Duty
Have you read into how big a sham our grand juries are? I'm currently serving on a federal grand jury, and several times a month they pay travel and per diem for dozens of people to listen to a one-sided argument by a US Assistant District Attorney to bring a case to trial. No defense is offered, and they can withhold as much evidence as they like. It's a total waste of time, and I'm sure costs the tax payers millions of dollars a year. After witnessing how ridiculous the whole process, I read that in most countries the prosecutor simply offers their evidence to a judge, who determines probable cause.

But the most outrageous stories you've heard recently about grand juries are that even though they'll "indict a ham sandwich," police officers accused of crimes rarely get indicted because it's in the prosecutor's best interest not to aggravate the department from whom they receive most of their work.

TheBeardKing··on The ambivalent marriage takes a toll on health
Since I'm no sociologist, how do these researchers go about determining whether correlation = causation? I myself would tend to come to the opposite conclusion, that healthy motivated people with good vitals are more likely to put more effort into their marriage, because being healthy just makes you feel better in general. I've been married for 10 years, 2 kids, and I look forward to seeing my sexy wife because she makes an effort to keep herself looking good, and I put in the same effort. I think having the good vitals mentioned in this article improves your outlook on every aspect of life, but of course it's just one factor coming into play with money, time, other relationships, etc.

There are a multitude of things you can do to reduce inequality at birth, from prenatal care to childcare. Statistics show that inequality certainly matters when correlated among other first world countries with social problems such as crime, teenage pregnancy, illiteracy, health, etc etc. If you're open to new ideas, I suggest you watch this TED talk: http://www.ted.com/talks/richard_wilkinson?language=en

TheBeardKing··on The pressure to achieve academically is a crime against learning
Right, and if to achieve that style of learning I have to give up half our salaries to private school, I'd choose homeschooling to get the added benefit of lower stress (on wife and kids) and generally more convenience and life comfort.
TheBeardKing··on The pressure to achieve academically is a crime against learning
Good cover, but one could argue that the pros of devoted tutorship and freestyle curriculum outweigh the cons of limited socialization. In my everyday life as an adult professional, I appreciate more the limited educational breadth I received in public school over whatever street smarts I gained from it. Need exposure to a lower socio-economic tiers? Get involved in volunteer charity organizations. Overall, I think educational breadth and depth will make one a far better citizen than simply being among other public school students at the hands of the awful US education system with NCLB.

But even subcontractors on government projects are subject to the same limitations as the prime contractor. So many limitations and increased overhead are imposed on government contractors, it's not surprising government projects fail in ways a similar private project would not with similar funding.

I don't know, I don't view Google as having the same level of perfection as, say, Apple. I know when I use Google products, almost infinitely in beta, there's going to be some things lacking and unpolished. Helpful yet unfinished, you take what you get.

TheBeardKing··on Women now hold a majority of all management positions in the U.S
The conclusion of the Harvard study at the end of the article is revealing:

“The gap exists because hours of work in many occupations are worth more when given at particular moments and when the hours are more continuous,” she writes. “That is, in many occupations earnings have a nonlinear relationship with respect to hours. A flexible schedule often comes at a high price, particularly in the corporate, financial, and legal worlds.”

A lot of work, especially in management, requires just being available. Your presence, which may not be necessarily required, makes access to your decision-making and input much easier. It's understandable that women who are not completely sold out to the company their entire careers do not make it to the very top rungs in corporate leadership for this reason.

TheBeardKing··on Oyster is launching an e-book store
Thanks for the added info, I also wasn't familiar with Oyster. It also appears that Oyster offers the app for iOS and Android, but that still leaves a hole for e-paper readers. I'll likely be buying a Kindle Paperwhite in the near future, as the contrast, weight, and battery life just can't be beat. I do wish there was a competitive e-reader open to other subscriptions/retail stores such as Oyster. Why is there no open e-reader OS yet? Is the market demand for e-readers over tablets not there?

I'm in the same boat, to the point where she asked me to password restrict her being able to install the facebook app. She'll still access it through the web interface, she says to make it more difficult to access.

She's the introverted type, socially anxious, and I can understand the draw of being able to look into others lives without having to actually interact with them. The problem, then, is just as the study describes. Face to face conversations give a better glimpse on what's really going on personally, the good and the bad, while the newsfeed is a stream of bragging or things to be judgmental about.

Top news is the feature of facebook I appreciate most. I would go crazy if I were only inundated with the stream of menial crap you see in real time. Facebook learns who I actually interact with and knows my family members, and shows me the "upvoted" stories so that when I get on facebook once daily for 3-5 mins, I'm caught up.

>This will make people even less present, because they'll be even more tightly connected to the invisible communication happening while you're talking to them.

This is an insightful prediction I hadn't considered. People oftentimes have their phones on silent because they don't want to be bothered at certain times, or can at least ignore some intermittent buzzing. The ease of checking your wrist at every buzz will make it more tempting to divert your attention to it. While it may save phone pulls, it will increase distraction from the task at hand. Now not only do I have a choice whether to check the notification, I now know what the notification is and have to decide whether to act on it or not. Surely that added multitasking will make it more difficult to concentrate.

Just like studies they've done on emails, it's better to let them pile up for a period without notification than to quickly glance at each incoming email. People are just better at concentrating on one thing.

TheBeardKing··on Can Oregon's tiny houses be part of the solution to homelessness?
Interesting, I did not know international building codes existed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Building_Code
TheBeardKing··on Can Oregon's tiny houses be part of the solution to homelessness?
I'm curious, what is a specific zoning ordinance which prohibits small houses? In my county, the building code does not mandate a minimum size, but many HOA covenants do. Or is it just the grouped houses that are outlawed, like minimum parcel size of 0.25 acre or something?
