TheBeardKing··on Removing Bad Actors on Facebook
The underlying argument is that although the economy is improving in some aspects for some people, what good is it if the majority of the population sees no to negative benefit? If a journeyman level low skill worker makes less real wages today than 30 years ago, and the majority of the country is comprised of low skill workers, how on earth could anyone consider the recent economy a net positive for the country?

Aren't there already filters to block the user from seeing any more posts from a certain source, see less posts from that friend, unfollow friend completely, etc? I guess they could refine it into categories like politics, but that'd hit a lot of gray areas. Their strategy recently has been to de-emphasize links altogether, but that does nothing about the crappy shared posts from spam pages.
TheBeardKing··on Georgia Has a Coast?
What you're neglecting in your argument is the weather of central coastal CA. Not only is it far more temperate, it also lacks the constant threat of hurricanes or blizzards. Small earthquake chance, but nothing serious so far. There's a reason the deep south is so cheap - no one wants to summer in our heat and humidity! And very few people enjoy surviving the winters of Detroit.
TheBeardKing··on Georgia Has a Coast?
But if you have a lot of money you don't have to bother with the bugs and the riff-raff at the campground, you can overnight in a B&B[1]! Make sure you bring your dinner jacket though. They even provide a private ferry from Fernandina Beach, FL, so no risk of accidentally touching any smelly campers. [1]http://greyfieldinn.com
TheBeardKing··on Georgia Has a Coast?
Fripp Island was inline with discussion on the privatization of beaches. The only bridge to get to Fripp Island is through Hunting Island, and they don't let non-residents through. Sea Pines is a little more lax since it's not as elite as Sea Island - they don't check the credentials of cyclists, and it's the only way I've visted.

I'm not sure how much of the beach is considered public in east coast states, I know CA has laws against full privatization. But by gating the only road access, you've effectively privatized the beach unless you kayak there or something.

TheBeardKing··on Georgia Has a Coast?
Sulfur most likely.
TheBeardKing··on Georgia Has a Coast?
The same thing happend to Hilton Head Island, SC. Most of the south end has become a gated community. Hunting Island, SC as well - Fripp Island is a gated community.

My biggest hope is that Cumberland Island, GA can avoid this fate. It has no bridge to it, and most of it is preserved as wilderness area, but the county seems to be trying its hardest to develop what private land remains on the island. It's a real shame, because it's one of the last wild, preserved islands anyone can get to by booking a ferry with the park service.

TheBeardKing··on Australia's new e-health platform crashes as people rush to opt-out
I meant that as a hypothetical, as in if the government proves itself untrustworthy (or technically incompetent, as is the case of Australia judging by these comments), you can't legally switch to a new system, whereas you could if it were private.
TheBeardKing··on Australia's new e-health platform crashes as people rush to opt-out
I get that there's benefit to a centralized health database if you're in a country with socialized medicine, but if dealing with private doctors, why not let the market provide this capability? My primary GP uses one version [1], and I get that there would be several competing others until some convergence happens. But at least with these private providers, if one fails or falls out of trust, patients and doctors can move to another - your data isn't permanently locked with an untrustworthy government.

TheBeardKing··on In 2017, US had largest decline in CO2 emissions
Higher wealth is no excuse to produce higher emissions, if anything it should be the opposite - those with the wealth should use it to better control all negative externalities.
TheBeardKing··on How Silicon Valley Fuels an Informal Caste System
What you call the "whims and woes of the market" others would call market efficiency. Being a government employee myself, and dealing with multiple state and federal government programs in my personal life including my mortgage, I am fully on board with allowing the market to better serve the needs of people making their own decisions with cash in hand funded collectively by every citizen of this country. Which, by the way, if not called socialism then I don't know what is.

Also, UBI by its very acronymm is Universal, meaning everyone gets the same amount. That's the only fair way to do it, and would negate criticism of cash recipients being "dishonest and lazy." Yes some pay more than others, but that's simply a re-implementation of our current progressive tax system.

I think it all basically comes down to your view on government - can they do the right and best thing, or can the individual make better decisions for themselves. By disempowering the invididual, you may even the outcomes, but you disadvantage those who would most benefit from achieving more in life - which in turn, benefits society.

TheBeardKing··on Canada legalises recreational cannabis use
By legitimate do you mean able to bank? Because that's the only real drawback I see in the legalized states. And it doesn't seem to be that big an issue worth losing your US consumer base over, since I assume no way in hell can they export to legal states.
TheBeardKing··on Just How Much Money Do “Influencers” Make?
Young people seek new ideas and trends more for self discovery, to impress friends and potential partners, create new identities, etc. Once we're settled and established we don't seek new things as much and most things appear more mundane.

I'll always look for aggregate opinions on reddit, tripadvisor, amazon, etc., but I doubt I'll ever find a single other person so much like myself to trust them for everything.

TheBeardKing··on Luxury hotels are being inundated with requests from self-described influencers
Another worse case scenario for the future of social media could be one outlined in the movie The Circle with Tom Hanks and Emma Watson. Soon, the "influencers" will be available live, all the time. If you have no job prospects or useful skills, why not just sell your privacy for brand promotion? https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4287320/
TheBeardKing··on Study: Today’s dads are engaging more with their kids
Is a decrease in crime really a valid counterpoint to an increase in depressed, overweight, and suicidal kids? On one hand you have maybe time served in juvy with a chance to straighten out and learn life lessons, or possibly become a career criminal. On the other hand you have an obese recluse with a chance of suicide or long-term depression.

edit: To add to that, of course crime is down - kids are driving later, going out less, having less sex. There are less opportunities for crime, unless you count underage sexting. So if you view more time spent in front of a screen preferable to a decrease in misdemeanor loitering, you'd have a point.

TheBeardKing··on Study: Today’s dads are engaging more with their kids
I don't imagine these kids growing up saying "I wish my dad hadn't spent so much time with me." Maybe in the helicopter parent sense, but an increase in quality time with your dad doesn't necessarily mean a decrease in independent play, or child-led play. If it does, then I would likely be concerned as there is mounting evidence that decreasing independence is not good for kids.
TheBeardKing··on Study: Today’s dads are engaging more with their kids
I very much agree. I've thought for some time now how I have much in more common with my 8 year old nephew (I'm 34) than with my own father. My father's interest include hunting, bows, knives, religion, war aritifacts and memorabilia, and other things which were common among men for a hundred years. Things rapidly changed in the information age, so I grew up with computers and video games in similar ways to kids today. Granted we didn't have the level of mobile technology, but I still had Gameboy. And many of the same franchises from the 80s/90s have persisted in popularity to today - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Nintendo characters, Lego just to name a few. I've matured out of most kid things, but my point is that I can relate much more to my nephew over those things than my father could to me.

TheBeardKing··on Illnesses from Mosquito, Tick, and Flea Bites Increasing in the US
Anyone have experience with mosquito yard treatments? I'm in the southeast and have a good-sized garden, so I don't want to treat with anything which would harm pollinators. I've used the Terminix AllClear Bait and Kill spray the past couple years, and there's several studies which support the efficacy of its patented ATSB ingredient. The problem is it's only available to consumers in the small spray cans, which run $15 for a 2-pack. The concentrate is only available to Terminix exterminators and municipalities. There are other natural methods, but they mainly rely on deterrence rather than elimination.

Sounds like credit cards need to come with some sort of "tampered with" mechanism covering the chip, sort of like scratch off to reveal numbers on gift cards.
TheBeardKing··on Schools Struggle with Vaping Explosion
Obviously the rate increased, it's a fairly new device. Nintendo Switch must've went nuclear. Pokemon Go caused utter annihiliation.
TheBeardKing··on Schools Struggle with Vaping Explosion
>The 2017 Monitoring the Future survey on adolescent drug use found that 11 percent of 12th graders, 8.5 percent of 10th graders and 3.5 percent of 8th graders had vaped nicotine in the previous 30 days. Of those high school seniors, 24 percent reported vaping daily, which the study defined as vaping on 20 or more occasions in the previous 30 days

I'm sorry, but is <10% of high schoolers an "explosion"? Obviously e-cigarettes are more appealing than tobacco products, but regular cigarette use was 15.8% in 2011 [1]. Marijuana use is at close to 6%, so not that big a gap from the apparent "explosion" of kids vaping.
