TheAlchemist··on Influencers and OnlyFans models are dominating U.S. O-1 visa requests
I struggle to understand who pays for OF content and who follows them ? From what I've read 99% of OF is porn in some form or another. So there are millions of people who create accounts and pay for it - linking their personnal info to this thing ?

As for the visa, it's not surprising and obviously idiotic for the society, but from the 'merit' standpoints it feels about right - if somebody has 10M followers, it's not that different from a radio or tv star.

TheAlchemist··on Statement from Jerome Powell
> The current administration will end

They way the current administration act, I start to think that their plan A is to stay for a long long time. There is so much open corruption that half of them would land in prison really quickly and they don't seem particularly bothered by that fact.

TheAlchemist··on US oil giant ExxonMobil says Venezuela is 'uninvestable'
I grew up in Eastern Europe. For 90% of people there at the time, US = paradise. Maybe it was propaganda, I don't know. Later in life I got travel a lot and meet a lot of Americans and for most, their moral and ethics are at the exact opposite of what the US is showing now.
TheAlchemist··on US oil giant ExxonMobil says Venezuela is 'uninvestable'
Regardless of weather it's true or not, they have a huge interest in saying so.

What's really crazy (even by today's US standards) is how Trump and his clique speak as if he annexed Venezuela and he can do whatever he wants.

It was discussed 100 times here already, but the damage to the myth of US as the 'good guy' that is immense. I personally see the US now, as the same that say China or Russia and have no intention of going there again, unless absolutely necessary. If you told me that some years ago, I would think you're crazy.

TheAlchemist··on Minneapolis driver shot and killed by ICE
Because news shouldn't be what is on the front page on HN, and I generally agree.

However, we're not living in normal times. US is speed running the book to become a dictatorship, or probably worse. And it's in no small part thanks to the tech community, which HN is all about.

Recent story about how Grok is used to produce naked pictures of any women or girl, including young kids, was killed very quickly on HN. I feel like a lot of people working in tech should take a good look in the mirror.

TheAlchemist··on Eat Real Food
I like the title - average food in the US is absolute shit - both in taste and from health perspective. It doesn't even taste like real food most of the time. Just like sugar with some flavour...

I don't get the 'For decades we've been misled' though - what guidance prioritiezed highly processed food ? From the look on both pyramids, they pretty much recommend the same things, in different proportions (more proteins now, less carbs) - but I don't think any reasonable guidance promoted highly processed sweet carbs before.

TheAlchemist··on Trump Floats Cancelling 2026 Elections, Then Insists He Won't
The thing I really struggle to understand, is what's their exit plan ?

He and his family, they always disregarded the law, but for guys like Marco Rubio ? He knows damn well the consequences of what they are doing and at some point they will need to pay for it, once they loose an election. Will he argue that he was just obeying orders, trying to limit the damage etc ?

TheAlchemist··on U.S. Attack to Seize Greenland Would End NATO, Danish Prime Minister Says
The only time NATO intervened militarly at the request of a member (through Article 5) in its history was actually for the benefit of the US.
TheAlchemist··on There were BGP anomalies during the Venezuela blackout
Not really. Ferrari is a great car, but with punctured tires or bad driver, it won't win any race.

Although I do agree, that in war only the final outcome is important. It's just that in this case it failed not necessarily because of technology, but because of humans.

TheAlchemist··on There were BGP anomalies during the Venezuela blackout
Something like this more or less happened during the initial Israeli strike on Iran ?

From what I remember reading, they were able to gain air dominance not because Iranian air-defense was bad, but because it was put almost completely out of service for a brief period of time by people on the ground - be it through sabotage, cyber-warfare, drone attacks from inside, allowing the Israeli jets to annihilate them.

TheAlchemist··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
What if France 'donated' some nukes to every EU country (okay, maybe not Hungary) ?

It won't happen, but I wonder what could the US possibly do about it.

TheAlchemist··on Grok Sexual Images Draw Rebuke, France Flags Content as Illegal
It got upvoted quite quickly, then flagged. The way the algorithm works, if a hot topic is flagged for some time, the story will never show up on the front page.
TheAlchemist··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
Some certainly will, but not many I think. There are very few westerners outside of the US, who want to have anything to do with what the US are doing now.
TheAlchemist··on Grok Sexual Images Draw Rebuke, France Flags Content as Illegal
What's amazing to me is that this is silenced by HN. It should be a major topic of discussion here.
TheAlchemist··on Tesla sales fell by 9 percent in 2025, its second yearly decline
Why don't you ask for a refund ?
TheAlchemist··on Tesla’s 4680 battery supply chain collapses as partner writes down deal by 99%
Nobody disputes that the car can drive itself 99% of the time. It can and it's a great system (well, opinions diverge, I mostly agree). But it's very far from a Robotaxi - for any reasonable person, Robotaxi means unsupervised rides, which Tesla is not currently doing at all. And they argue pretty strongly in court that any talk about unsupervised is just 'corporate puffery'.

This is similar to why one needs to keep an eye on todlers. 99% they are fine, but that 1% of time they will do something very dangerous.

TheAlchemist··on Tesla’s 4680 battery supply chain collapses as partner writes down deal by 99%
In SF ? That would be illegal, as Tesla don't even have the permit to do that:

https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle-industry-services/auto...

They only can test with a driver for now. Can you take a ride in this Robotaxi and film it, so we can all see ?

I'm always very curious about why people argue some obvious lies like that about Tesla. Invested ? Paid shills ? Just Musk distortion field ?

TheAlchemist··on Warren Buffett steps down as Berkshire Hathaway CEO after six decades
From the outside yes - money and career wise, he accomplished everything he wanted.

His personal life is much more complicated though - impossible to know if he was happy or not, but for sure it was not usual.

TheAlchemist··on Warren Buffett steps down as Berkshire Hathaway CEO after six decades
Read his biography - "The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life". It's quite long but pretty accurate picture of the man and what drives him. His answer was always that he just loves what he does and he does it with people he loves (Charlie). One can hardly ask for more in life.
TheAlchemist··on You and Your Research – Richard Hamming (June 6, 1995) [video]
This talk has popped on HN from time to time - it's worth watching, especially as one reflects on past year and make plans for the next one.
TheAlchemist··on Tesla’s 4680 battery supply chain collapses as partner writes down deal by 99%
One would be crazy to bet on that on Polymarket. They had a bet for Tesla Robotaxi rollout before end of 2025 and it resolved to YES. So it must be like your FSD - Tesla is apparently already operating a general public access autonomus Robotaxi, maybe even 50% of the US population like the CEO said.
TheAlchemist··on Ask HN: Loneliness at 19, how to cope?
Dale Carnegies book 'How to Win Friends and Influence People' could actually help a bit. It's a self-help book, 100 years old, but still very relevant. Nothing magical in it, but quite useful, and for somebody as young as you are it could have a big impact over the lifetime.

In any case, just know that a lot of people struggle with it - much much more than you could imagine. It's worth trying to fix it though.

Good luck !

TheAlchemist··on Tesla’s 4680 battery supply chain collapses as partner writes down deal by 99%
Yeah, that was already almost 1 year after they were supposedly planning to have the top 5 compute ...

The reality is they announced that as a pipe dream. Just like the FSD, Robotaxi, Optimus and 10 other projects that will never work - or more precisely, they will work but >10 years from now, and it won't be from Tesla but from a competitor.

TheAlchemist··on Tesla’s 4680 battery supply chain collapses as partner writes down deal by 99%
It's really amazing. Anyone still remembers Dojo ? 2 years ago or so they stated that they start to mass produce Dojo and it was supposed to be a top 5 supercomputer in the world by the end of 2024...

TheAlchemist··on Tesla’s 4680 battery supply chain collapses as partner writes down deal by 99%
The reason for that is actually very funny. Electrek guy (Fred) was one of the main propagandist for Tesla's cult - he 'earned' 2 free Tesla Roadsters for his convincing enough people to buy a Tesla.

It was only once he realized that he has been duped and those will never materialize that the coverage turned negative.

TheAlchemist··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2026?
Musk empire will come crashing down, starting with Tesla.

AI bubble will start to pop (even though the adoption continues to improve slowly).

US / Europe separation will accelerate.

EDIT: For the first 2 - it's the 3rd year I'm thinking it will be 'the' year...

TheAlchemist··on The Path to Mojo 1.0: open source v1.0 expected for 2026
This is pretty exciting. When I first saw Mojo, it was announced as a 'python superset' with C++ performance. This announcement seems somewhat more modest, but still seems like a big step - open sourcing it should be very good for adoption.

Any feedback from people using it already ? Is this the right moment to jump in, or better wait a year or two ?

TheAlchemist··on Ask HN: How does one get involved in FPGA development?
FPGAs are widely used in low latency trading. Most market data feed handlers and order passing adapters are done in FPGAs today - they offer better latency than software solutions and processing time is deterministic.

One example of a company offering something like that: https://www.enyx.com/

It highly depends on what you're doing, but in trading there is very often a direct reliationship between latency and how much money you can make.

TheAlchemist··on Trump's Devastating Plan for Ukraine
I think the quote from the Polish Prime Minister refusing very similar German demands just before WW2 started is appropriated here:

“Peace is a precious and a desirable thing. Our generation, bloodied in wars, certainly deserves peace. But peace, like almost all things of this world, has its price, a high but a measurable one. We in Poland do not know the concept of peace at any price. There is only one thing in the lives of men, nations and countries that is without price. That thing is honor.”

As it turned out, Poland paid a very heavy price. But we're damn proud of it.

TheAlchemist··on Trump's Devastating Plan for Ukraine
100%. The first version of Trump as a president was a clown that was being managed by responsible people, mostly.

The second time however, he learned his lesson. He's still a clown but he put his people, ranked by loyalty above anything else, in all key position. They are all knee deep in probably the most obvious and manifest corruption we've ever seen in a Western country. They won't oppose him in any way unless they are sure he's dead or gone forever.
